I got into cycling in a serious way in the wake of Greg LeMond's 1986 Tour de France win. LeMond inspired me in a big way; I could hardly believe someone could be paid to ride a bike for six hours a day. It didn't take long before I got into racing both road and mountain bikes.

In 1991 I set out for the open road and undertook a three-week, 2100 mile solo bike tour in the Rocky Mountains. I rode from Missoula, Montana, to Kalispell, back to Missoula, on into Yellowstone National Park, through Grand Teton National Park, across Wyoming and down into Colorado. I ended the tour in Crested Butte, Colorado, where I took part in the week-long Fat Tire Bike Week. By the time I was back home I was fried and tired of the bike for the one and only time in my life. I wanted nothing so much as a job.

I've freelanced for most everyone and been staff for Bicycle Guide and The Ride. One of the high points of my publishing career was launching and publishing the independent Asphalt Magazine. The run was short, but we were well-regarded for what we accomplished.
