Hi Y'all,

was wondering if those of you 'in the know' could give me a bit of health advice. Had a weird day today - at about 10am I suddenly started burning up and had a horrible fever for the whole day (hot & shivers, aching joints, headache, nausea, etc). Unfortunately I was on a training course so I couldn't leave early. I got home about 3 hours ago - had a cold relief drink and ibuprofen, slept off and on for a few hours and had some food (think I sweat some of it out). I feel much better now but that's maybe the meds. I'm going to have a really early night tonight and try to sleep it off.

Tonight was supposed to be a run night but there was no way could I make it. Would I be okay to go tomorrow do you think? (Depending on how I am feeling). Should be circuit training (weights), maybe a short swim and then a good run tomorrow. However I am having flashbacks to my old kickboxing instructor telling me if I had a fever my body was under too much stress to cope with extreme physical activity.

Any pointers or suggestions?

Cheers

Lex

Hi

I am about to buy a road bike (pinarello Fp2) via the internet from the states.

The price is 1000 euro cheaper in the states. I plan to have it shipped to my brother in Boston and he will bring it home with him in a few weeks.

Have ye guys any tips with regard to buying a bike over the net, how to transport it on a plane safely, and how do i size myself properly for the bike. The guy in the local shop here is slow to size me, unless i pay a deposit first-he knows what i'm up to??

Any advice appreciated

I did my first 45 minute class. While the cardio impact is obviously based upon ones own motivation. I was curious how others felt about spinning's benefits on bike training?

Or is it like trying to compare an elliptical machine and running outdoors?

hiya,

I'm a normally a pretty active person but like most people I think, I go through peaks and troughs in the level of said activity. In the past I've mostly gone to the gym but after a recent trough, I've decided to take up road running as it's much cheaper! Anyway, I'm currently trying to lose weight (not much, just a few pounds) and I want to be sensible about it. I know how important it is to regain your strength by eating post-workout but at the same time I don't want to be cancelling out the good work I've just done. Any advice (bearing in mind I'm a poor student and can't really afford all those fancy energy bars/gels etc.)? I'm currently running 3-5km but working towards a 10 km.

Thanks!

Hiya!

I've recently decided that after half a lifetime of being a couch potato it was time I did something about it and tried to get back to the fitness I once enjoyed in my schooldays. I've started with a combination of cycling, walking and running and I'm thoroughly enjoying it.While I don't experience any pain while doing this exercise, when I get out of bed the following morning I have an intense pain down the inside of my right foot, along the side of my instep. It gradually gets better over the first 30 minutes of the day until I don't feel it anymore, but the next morning, there it is again, even if I've had a lazy day the day before. I have proper fitted running shoes so can't see that these are to blame, and anyway it happens when my main exercise for the day has been cycling. Has anyone experienced anything similar, or have any ideas what could be causing this? Any advice would be hugely appreciated!

Thanks!

Cramp prevention (legs)

Hi all, I've recently got back into recreational/sportivo cycling after some years off (count 12) though I've been commuting and/or running in the interim. The only time I recall getting leg cramps back then was a post flu race.

Now it seems I'm guaranteed to get leg cramps on any event lasting >3-4hrs. Though the cramps are most likely to present when the event is long and of high intensity I also get them occasionally on short training rides, and even in bed at night (those horrid foot arch types). Riding cramps appear most frequently in the calves, followed by quads, and hamstrings.

I've been vigilent on the hydration and electrolyte side of things and the ride environment is pretty temperate (not too hot/cold/humid). Also have tried various food and supplement regimes including banana, fig, magnesium, calcium, enzogenol, fish oil, and I don't have a low sodium diet.

Background: I'm 35 years old, about 74kg, 183cm, resting HR low 40s, and I'm training about 10-12hrs per week on the bike. I also do a core workout, but admittedly a bit lax on the stretching side of things. I also have some varicose veins reappearing (had some removed in my youth) with an accompanying dull pain from time to time.

Any insight or advice most appreciated - thinking of visiting my GP, though wonder if there might be a better medical/sports practitioner on this front?

Many thanks,

If this has been asked repeatedly, please show me the previous posts. I'd be happy to read that.

I have been running anywhere from 18-25mi per week while working on training for a 10k and a local half marathon. No problems. After completing both runs, I started fighting off shin splints and they have not gone away. The last run was in early Feb 2008.

After the runs, I took nearly a month off of running, except for the occassional 3mi run once or twice per week. I crosstrained on a bike during that time.

I'm currently wearing Nike Structure Traix 10 w/ a Powerstep Insole. The shoes feel fine, my feet feel fine, and I like they way they have held up. Currently their mileage is sitting around 230mi. Now that I'm getting my mileage back up, the shins are in absolute pain after a run. I seriously doubt it's the mileage b/c currently I'm running 2-3mi 3x per week and never two days consecutively. I'm unsure what else it could be though. I still ride the bike for crosstraining.

Does anybody have any suggestions?

Hey

im 23 years old male and this summer intend to join the army. im gloriously unfit and equally gloriously poor. so going to the gym or getting new equitment is out of the question.

at home i have a nice set of weights which i use for strength purposes but its my stamina that is the problem.

im so unfit that running a mile is a task right now, i know with exercise this will steadily increase but im not sure how best to approach it. i want to avoid cycling because i get lazy on it.

8 days ago i started my "get off my ass get fit" routine and on my weigh in yesterday i had gone down from 210 pounds at the start to 200 pounds after a week, so improvement is there.

i would just like some suggestions on starting from the bottom of the fitness ladder to super fit on a shoe-string. i have the fitness of a 20 stone man but the commitment of a royal marine so im up for anything to get fit.

Any help guys?

A cross-country runner told me to run as quietly as possible. I've been running since then fairly frequently. Since moving to Colorado, I've been trying to run 4x per week.

My point is, every now and then I can't run quietly and my left leg smacks the ground. It drives me crazy and I physically cannot lift my toes to get that smooth roll from heel to toe - on every other step. If I try, my calf - maybe behind my bone - hurts. I cannot tell whether it's a muscle or ligament. It's usually not painful enough for me to stop running....but I run straight home when it bothers me.

Usually this only happens for a day or two and disappears - maybe twice in the last 6 months. Not sure why because I don't really change any of my habits. Last week it kept getting worse, tried to run 4 days, so I took about 5 days off and now I'm just fine.

Does anyone recognize this?

Hi, im 17

I started running around a month ago in preparation to join the RAF (Royal Air Force).

I run twice a week normally between 1 and 2 miles. (RAF fitness test is run 1.5mile in 12.12minutes)

Problem is, lately ive been suffering from a sore throat. Usually starts hurting about half way through the run. When i cough it just hurts more and takes a couple of hours after the run for it to completely go. And i dont know why

Is it the cold (its quite cold where i am this time of year, and i run on mornings - even colder then), or is it my breathing technique?

I really really hope i dont have asthma, if it is i cant join the air force =(

thanks

I started running in Oct 07. I am now up to 3.5 miles every other day and am hoping to start adding to my distance again in prep for my first 5K this spring. I realize this makes me a newbie and I have a question.

Occasionally when I run, at about the 2 mile mark, I will have pain radiating into my right shoulder. I'm no pro at anatomy - but it is in the space that sort of makes a triangle between my collar bone and the top part of the shoulder muscle. I don't know why, but I am convinced that this is cardiovascular related -- it just feels tied to my breathing. If I stop and walk (which I HATE to do) the pain subsides. But once I get going again, on that particular run, it will soon start up again once I'm back at my pace.

I don't get side aches when I run at all, but that is almost what it feels like -- a stitch in my shoulder. Only the right shoulder.

If this is "nothing" then great, I'll just push through it. But I'm 37 and have a pretty serious family history of heart disease. I would hate to ignore something I shouldn't.

Anybody have any ideas or experienced this?
I am 5'6" and 186 lbs...I gained about 41 lbs in the last year due to a back injury from a car accident, which took approximately 8 months to heal to the point where I could resume my normal activity levels. Now I'm at my heaviest weight ever and I'm having a HARD time making any progress, even though I'm working out 4-5 times a week, for an hour at a time, with at least 30 mins of cardio in there, and the rest is weights.... Plus I'm keeping my calories under 2000, and i avoid processed sugars, I dropped my carbs and increased my veggie intake, drinking lots of water and staying away from alcohol.....sigh....

I have no idea what else to do. I have been athletic all of my life , and have never had this much trouble dropping weight....The only thing I can think of is that the antidepressants are making it harder to lose the weight.

does anyone know how to get around this, or if there are alternatives to this prescription that dont cause weight gain?

I run 30 - 35 miles per week thats 6 - 8 miles three days and 1 10 mile run on the weekend. I was wondering how much carbohydrate I should include in my diet to fuel my runs and not feel like I'm dragging while still being able to slowly lose a few more pounds.

Thank you.

Hi everybody. I'm misstearyvee. i'm 17 years old and currently finishing up my last year of highschool. I've always been an avid runner because a)running is freaking awesome and b) i was/am obsessed about my weight. this obsession caused me to have an eating disorder, bulimia with anorexic tendencies.

i've struggled with this for many years and have only recently been given a chance to recover. I'll be attending intensive in/out-patient treatment at a clinic this January. I plan on living my life healthier and lose weight safely. I had lost and gained weight alot this year and i really am looking for something that i can stick to, y'know? I'm 5'4 currently 125 lbs. My lowest weight was 114 and highest was 132.
i'm hoping to find ppl who can help support me on my road to recovery, and bring me back to reality. any nutrition tips or advice is welcome, thanks for listening. <3

Have any marathon runners out there tried using Accelerade? I know that the label has an allergen warning on it that states that it contains milk. I am lactose intolerant and have been afraid to try it. It is the hydration beverage at my next marathon...YIKES!

Please let me know what you all think of this product. Thanks

I have recently been diagnosed as having exercise-related asthma. I am using an inhaler just before running and it seems to be making my breathing easier. Does anyone have any tips for me?

Also, I have excess mucous at the back of my throat (sorry) and have to keep coughing and swallowing to clear it while running. Someone suggested taking an Actifed tablet before running to dry it up. I'm worried this will make me feel very thirsty. What do you think? (I am seeing my GP in a few days to discuss this with her.)
