Hey all...just wanted to see what sort of interest there would be to run this race. I think it would be a great course...nice scenery, soft running surface, relatively close to Scottsbluff.

http://www.deadwoodmickelsontrailmarathon.com/index.html

It is June 8, 2008.

You can do either the full marathon or the half. There is a 5 person relay option which costs $175 ($35 per person). The legs of the relay are between 8 and 4 miles long.

I would be happy to either run a leg in the relay. Or, if there is not enough interest in the relay, I will probably just do the half.

Daniel

OK....so running is not my thing but I do like to ride and am starting to at least get motivated to do something. I did realize tonight when I got off at 5pm that it is quite dark....bummer. So, need to get some lights for the bike before I venture off in the dark and get killed!!

The overtraining syndrome

I'm not sure whether I just want to try out the forum or what... but here is a screening questionnaire for overtraining from Waitz and Averbuck, 1986, p. 74 as it is depicted in Lore of Running, 4th ed. by Tim Noakes, MD.:

1. Does your normally comfortable pace leave you feeling breathless?

2. Do your legs feel heavy for far longer than usual after a hard workout or race?

3. Do you find it especially hard to climb steps?

4. Do you dread the thought of training?

5. Do you find it hard to get out of bed in the morning?

6. Do you have a persistent lack of appetite?

7. Are you more susceptible to colds, flu, headache, or infections?

8. Is your resting HR 5 to 10 beats higher than usual?

9. Is your resting HR during exercise higher than usual?

The author suggests that positive answers to three or more indicated it is time to reduce training. For me, I answered yes to 1, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, and 8, and I'm not sure about 9 since I don't measure HR during exercise. Add the menstrual irregularity (apparently a "short luteal phase"), and I think I may be emerging from a full-blown case of early overtraining. Apparently the cure is rest, 6-12 weeks of it. I have not been able to find out if simply backing off will do the trick or if I can cross train. What I read implies that I should train when I feel compelled to train for the pure joy of it, not for performance or goal (e.g., weight loss), etc. My run on Monday felt GREAT but I have felt run down and lackadaisical for, if I am totally honest, several weeks. We will see how things go. Maybe it is time to change gears and do some crosstraining with some strength/flexibility training. That sounds good to me.

You might forward or cut & paste some of this for Kim and Kent. Lore of Running has an excellent chapter on overtraining.
