It's time for new shoes again. I'd like to read some comments about your own decision on the shoe purchasing dilemma - Price versus Fit/Comfort. After going to a reputable running store and being analyzed by the professional, I settled on the pair that felt the best during my repeated runs up and down the sidewalk outside the store's front door. I compared the fit/feel of at least six different shoes; one model on one foot and the shoe I bought on the other. The issue is comfort at what price? My last pair fit the best and felt the best, so I opted to spend whatever it cost to get into that pair of shoes ($120). Now it's time to go for another round of deliberation. I know that a shoe that fits is a non-negotiable but if the price is $20-40 higher; do you find yourself settling for shoes that are not the best feeling of all?

I also have the dubious honor of having a shoe size that is not always in-stock. My current pair are 13’s but that is because the $120 shoes felt the best. If I would have gone with a less-expensive pair, I would have been into a 14 (no 13.5), which felt very sloppy. Mind you that I tried on several 14’s and they all felt sloppy.

I'm sort of interested in being able to upload data, I'm not sure what I'll learn from it but it sounds neat.
I'd also be interested in suggestions for HRM's under $200 US, if you have an opinion. Any feed back on the use of the polar foot pod, sd unit, would also be appreciated.
thanks for your help

Thinking about getting an HRM to see how hard I am really working my heart. All the HRMs on the ellipticals at the gym seem flaky. One second they show a rate of 78 bpm and the next 156. Could also use one when out on the road eiter running or riding. I'm thinking about either a Polar RS200 or RS400. Any feedback on either model or suggestions on alternatives? I don't need GPS capabilities and don't want to go broke.

Hi all,

I'm in New York and I have been running for about 3 months now. Sadly, the cold weather has arrived and I really want to stay outdoors as long as I can! I am looking for advice on what to wear to be comfortable in the 30-45 degree range. I was just at a sporting goods store and saw some $60 Nike (cold) pants and tops, and some $50 UnderArmor (cold gear). It seems like a lot to pay ($100-120 for a top and bottom set) but if that's the price, let me know. Maybe I can find a deal onilne. Is it unrealistic to think that will keep me warm??? Brrrr.

Thanks!

Anyone have any tricks to help break in shoes so they fit better, or is the key just wearing them a bunch?

I'm new to running, so my gear and gear knowledge are VERY limited. There has been alot of discussion about training at different paces. The question I have is what are you using to measure your pace during your run? I'm assuming you have some form of wrist-mounted device that gives you instant feedback on your pace, so as you adjust your pace during your run, you can tell when you are going too fast or too slow. I know there is a theory out there that you can train yourself to know what pace you are running at, but that requires something to measure it against during that training process. What is working for you?

This is a kind of weird question, but can I be too small for a water belt? I'm around 5'11''-6' like 110 pounds, so I'm a pretty scrawny kid. I have a water belt like this one:

http://www.coventryrunner.co.uk/catalog/images/nike%20hydration%20pack.jpg

that my dad won off Team In Training and gave to me. Anyways, I've tried to wear it twice, and I wear it on my hips (because that's the biggest part of me) and pull it pretty tight. Once I take like two strides though, it rides up into my torso area, and all of a sudden its goung everywhere because my torso is so much smaller than my hips. Whats up? am I gust wearing my belt wrong?

I am considering purchasing the Polar RS200. I am wondering about the comfort of the band to be worn around the chest. The RS 200 comes with a cloth band, but in your experience - specifically the women out there - does the band "stay put" or does it shift around? cause chafing? can it be washed?

As well, the foot pod seems a little bulky.

Always have had problems with training and overtraining. I generally blow up after a race or two and go years between running again.

Well I am back at it again and am wanting to try a new tact to keep me physically capable of running. I want to train with an HRM and either foot pod or GPS. My target is a 5k on April 18th a 10-k in August, a 1/2 marathon in October and potentially a marathon in Jan. of next year.

This past weekend I completed a 5k in 25:21 and know that I would have been faster if my training were better.

So what watches does everyone suggest. I am currently looking at the Garmin 305, Polar 400SD, and the Timex Bodylink. Does anyone have a suggestion or experience that would push one one way or the other.

Here's a new product I just started using that I can't stop telling my friends about. These guys http://www.see-me-run.com make reflective iron ons that you can apply onto your existing running apparel. They've got great designs and it's pretty inexpensive (about $10 bucks). I purchased a kit to try it out. It was easy to apply and my running club thought it looked great. They say it's very reflective when the cars have their headlights on. I tried pointing my flashlight at it while it was hanging in a dark room and it was the coolest thing. The material is super reflective. It's well worth the price.

FYI... Last time I tried "freeship" as a coupon code and I got free shipping too.

I truly believe that the Foam Roller saved my running career. Last year I could barely run because of a tight IT Band, I bought a foam roller from Fleet Feet in Chicago, I was amazed by how well it worked to stretch out my IT Band. I was back to running just in time (7 days) for my 20 mile marathon training run.

The only problem I had with the straight up foam roller was that it lost its firmness (and with that effectiveness) after about a month. In Chicago I was spending $30 dollars each time for a new one. I even would cut them into 3s to try and make them last longer....

Well I just found a new and improved PVC in-forced foam roller. It last 5 times longer and it's on sale for only $29. I love it and recomend it to all runners.

FYI: Even if it sounds like it I am not a sales person for this company, just your average runner.

This is actually a question about children's running shoes. My eight year old has a constant bruise over his right big toe (up on the knuckle connecting to the foot) due to his shoe. At times, it is so bad that he limps a bit. We have tried numerous brands of shoes over the years and cannot find anything to prevent it. We took him to have x-rays about a year ago and were told everything was fine. His doctor recommended a "deep welled" shoe. We took him straight to an athletic shoe store and they analyzed his gait and the shape of his foot. We ended up purchasing a pair of New Balance that were recommended by the salesman. The bruising improved, but did not completely go away. We have tried the moleskin patches to prevent friction (thinking that may be the culprit), but they won't stay put. If there is anyone out there who is knowledgeable about this type of issue, I would appreciate any advice on shoe brands, cushions, socks, etc. The poor kid wants so badly to run with me sometimes, but knows his foot will suffer if he goes too far. Plus, soccer season is starting and his kick is no good if he favors his poor toe.

Hi Guys,

was wondering if anyone can give me their opinion on the merits of owning a pair of trail running shoes? While it's nice weather I thought I might venture onto the trails during a couple of my weekly runs. Will my regular running shoes suffice or do I need a pair of specialist trail runners? What is so special about trail running shoes (other than the 'bumpers' and stickier soles)?

I don't have loads of money to throw away and I do need a pair of regular hiking trainers for walking on the trails and everyday use - so if i can get away without buying ANOTHER pair of shoes then I will.

Cheers

Lex

Hi runners

I am interested in buying a heart rate monitor with GPS enabled, but there are too many to choose from. Some friends recommended me the Garmin 305, but I see the 301 which has similar specs but it costs $100 less. Polar offers others, all types of features and prices... Please if you have done this research and have some experience with some monitors, please post your comments here.

Thanks a lot!

Are there any good running shoes out there for less than $60? I would prefer something not online as I do not want to guess what size I need or if it will fit me. I have a low arch and neutral gait. I know people would normally recommend the brooks Dyad or even the Asics Fortitude, but I can't spend that kind of money on shoes.

I have a Fleet Feet, Dicks Sporting Goods, Foot Locker, Famous Footwear, and Finish Line near me.
