Hi
I'm a beginner runner and I've been running for about 3 months and I have gone through my fair share of aches and pains, intitally, it turned out I was wearing the wrong shoes for my feet which fixed a lot of the knee and hip problems I was expereincing. Appparently I have really high arches and didn't know.
Last week I went for a mid length run (about 3 1/2 miles) and the next day I had a lot of pain in the upper part of my foot along the non arch side. Not directly below my ankle but more far forward.
The pain has continued and got a little better but when I ran again yesterday it was really sore.
I've been trying to research this online but can't find anything that describes it correctly. There is no swelling or redness, just pain especially when I point my toes or walk downstairs.
The closest decriptions I can find are for bone spurs, stress fractures, or peroneal tendonitis but they don't match.
Just wondered if anyone here had any insight? I'm going to try and get an appointment with the Drs since it's been painful for a week or so.
Thanks in advance!
I have high arches and experienced the same pain as you. I had a foot/ankle xray which was negative. My NP diagnosed as "lateral ankle tendonitis" I agree that peroneal tendonitis doesn't quite match. Motrin helped a lot. I almost feel like a joint is out of alignment- sometimes the ankle cracks when rotated. I am getting orthotics made to keep the foot ankle in better alignment during the strike phase.
Hope this helps- Michelle
Finally! Someone else who appears to be suffering the same thing as me. You've described it really well, I would only add that it sometimes is a burning sensation, too. But I also get the "joint out of whack" feeling. Like it needs to pop.
I, too, have spent countless hours going through online sites, trying to find something, but nother ever quite matches.
Some of the stuff I've found, though, suggests that running barefoot can strengthen the foot and help reduce pains like this.
I went to a podiatrist, but he only spent about 30 seconds looking at it, decided I had a "ganglion" on my foot, tried to drain it, realized it wasn't a ganglion, but just my regular foot, and then prescribed $500 orthotics to fix things.
Don't know that I'm going to trust that diagnosis just yet.
Let me know what your doctor says. I'm debating an x-ray, too.
Yeah, I recently experienced something similar 6 weeks ago.
I was asked to be reserve runner in a team half triathlon.
I usually only run 13km mainly on grass, as I have had knee soreness before.
I tried to run a full half marathon in training (at a slow pace) but mainly on the pavement.
The outside of my foot became sore within 4km, and I was only able to run 16.5km.
Anyhow the pain was on the outside of the foot, was sore to the touch and there was a little bruising.I also had a lot of pain on the outside of the knee also. I had real pain for 3 weeks, just walking around. I am on my feet a lot at work. I haven't run since the injury, and now my foot almost feels back to normal.
I was fitted with mizuno waves previously, but havent been happy with them.
I want to start back running, but am not sure what path to take to make sure the problem doesn't re occur. ie GP, Podiatrist, different shoe store?
So just the typical poster here, more questions than answers.lol.
I experienced something similar. I went to a podiatrist (who is a marathoner and triathlete) who told my I had a cuboid bone irratiation. The pain was on the upper outside portion of my rigth foot and at times, caused pain into the lower ankle. It felt like the ankle or foot needed to be adjusted or "popped" into the right place.
The Podiatrist taped my foot to sort of "hold in" the cuboid that had gotten a little out of alignment, and I kept the tape on for about 1 week. After that, I taped when I ran over the next 4 weeks. It is now feeling fine.
When looking for a good podiatrist, look to orthopedic practices or try to find one that is a runner. That is a big bonus. Contact your local shoe stores that specialize in runners and ask them for podiatrist recommendations.
Good luck to you!
