    Hi there,

I'm new to running and have started 4 times a week in training for my first half marathon and after reading these discussions about the importance of having the right shoe, i'm beginning to panic a little.

I bought a pait of Nike Air's and my calfs/knees have some pain after most runs which thought was part and parcel of running.  I have quite a high instep and am wondering if i may need some specialist running shoes?

    Any advice welcome!

Definitely go to a running specialty store and get fitted for the right shoes.  To be fitted correctly they should look at your foot shape and how you walk and run to make sure you get the right kind of support.

Don't worry.  It won't cost anything extra for the fitting and the shoes shouldn't be more expensive than quality running shoes purchased anywhere else.  You want to make sure you get the right shoes so running can be enjoyable for you and you will stick with it for the long haul.  It's really hard to keep going when it hurts all of the time.

     Good luck!

Hey...Happy New Year, and take it slow.  I too have a very high acrh, and narrow feet.  My feet are happy in Brooks Glycerin.  Lots of cushion and stability, and nice arch support.  I add Dr. Scholl's (spelling??) sport gel inserts for extra arch support and cushioning.  Do go to a running store and get fitted.  Also, check out www.runnersworld.com  They have a nice section on running shoes and break down the shoes based on runner's need (foot/body type).

    Happy Trails!
