Let's pass along some of our collective knowledge to the those people who are new to our great sport!

Tip#1  Cross train two or three days a week to give your body a break from running until you get used to the impact.  I recommend swimming or cycling (even indoor cycling classes like Spinning).

Agreed! I'm training for my first marathon and I swear that Sunday cross training is the only reason I haven't developed nagging injuries like many people I know! Its a good mental break too. I do 20min each of Stairs, Ellyptical and Bike.

Slow down to build mileage. After leveling off, then work on speed.

Hills are speed work in disguise.

#1 Set a (reasonable) goal: going from nothing to a marathon in 2 weeks is not reasonable, but a good goal gives you motivation when those days hit that you just want to go back to sleep. #2 Consider a training plan toward your goal: this site and runner's world have some.... there are TONS of books out there at the library or bookstore..... Galloway's great if you want to try the run-walk route..... I like Matt Fitzgerald's stuff on brain training #3 Log your progress towards your goal: if you like lots of details numbers, use this site and go crazy.... but at least get a little notebook to journal your training in.... #4 HAVE FUN!

Just started running.  Took a class Y's Way to a 5K.  Loved the class and even entered three races this summer and fall.  Now cold weather is approaching, so I need to continue running inside and when I can outside.  I also, enjoyed the races because it gave me something to look forward to and to set a goal.  I NEED to start finding 5K races in my area (RI, MA).  Any bit of advise would be helpful!!!Tongue out

Hi debdavies - have you gone to runningintheusa dot com?  They have a decent calendar of events for all states.

I'm doing my first 5K in over 20 years - in cold Michigan December weather!  RUN ON!
