Well done chiggy. Good to have you back, I look forward to your return. Seeing your numbers since I first got on has helped me heaps.

Today was a normal warm up - thankfully at a steady pace rather than a sprint we have been doing. Still reasonably quick though. We did 4x3min runs. Run out on the 1st and 3rd and have to get back to the startpoint on the 2nd and 4th. It is made difficult by having the run back uphill, and today it was into the wind as well, but I ran out a fair distance and made it back in time both times.

Finished with 4x uphill 250m which i did in 48,50,50 and 48. 2.5km run to station to catch train home.

By the way, yesterday with the wind at my back I beat my fastest ride home by 3 minutes, breaking 30kmh average for the first time. I love my time riding to work, love it more riding home.

nice cool day out,  and my run was nice and easy. H2,  if you ran 5 miles at 38 minutes,  you should have no problem with a 20 min 5k.  anyway,  i ran my normal 3.6 miles in 35 and change,  and took it easy today, as it is my birthday. Some buddieS got us seats for the yankees game tonight,  and maybe they will win just one,  just for me!!!!!

    Hard 10.4 miles.

Did 2.7 miles EZ with 3 moderate hills to warm up.

Then did ten Yasso's on the shoulder of a 4 lane highway. It was hard to judge my pace to the Subway mailbox, Home Depot driveway, etc... Times were inconsistent. The even runs were a little faster than the odd intervals...slight grade.

I had to do my intervals on the only fairly flat 1/2 mile of road around here because they tore up the High School track. I'm sure they will have it rebuilt before August.  The football practice field is in the infield. It will have to be ready for two-a-days.

Then I did 2.7 miles at tempo....in 29:14. 10:49 min/mile. 85% av.HR. That's my first sub 11 min/mile run. The intervals may not have been great but...the tempo felt good.

    EZ 5.3 recovery run tomorow.

Welcome H2 =) I listened to the advice offered this past weekend and took Sunday and Monday off from training. I got back out today and did 3.09 run/walk intervals. No more left calf twinges. My knee was a little tender to start but then loosened up nicely. =) This weekend's group run is 5 miles - I've never run that far in my life! There's a first time for everything... ::smile::

I was planning on a 5K run today in unfamiliar territory, but it turned out to be a 2.6mile run in 18:06. I shouldn't have ran so soon after my first 5miler 2 days ago, I could still feel the soreness and my breathing was way off! Lesson learned, but it felt good to be out on a nice day like this anyways Laughing.

Chiggy well done! You are a legend... man I wish I was that good.

H2, looks like your rocking... sheesh... I wish I was that good.

    Wait, there's a pattern here!

I'm actually pretty happy with the way things are going for me right now. I think my recovery is in full swing. Was back at the run club tonight, up to the next group. Started with hill intervals and had a great session, was heading up the group again so very pleased. Plus one of the run group leaders was talking to me during the run and told me that I should be absolutely fine for the half marathon in October. So totally psyched! I'm loving this running gig, it's the first sporting thing I have actually been good at.

Plus I was rocking at weight training this morning, did heavier weights than I've managed before!

    Yay! I'm back on form!

I took a quick trip to California this past weekend and ended up missing out on my long. I had great intentions but things just didn't go right on the trip. Anyway it's the first time that I have missed a scheduled run day since I started 3 months ago.

Tuesday: Got right back in it and did 5.44 miles in 57 minutes. My right shin was full of electric fire for some reason.

Wednesday: 4 miles in 38 minutes with my fastest mile at 09.04.

It's starting to get into summer down here in Florida and the humidity is really kicking my butt. I think it will take a week or two to adjust.

h2focus : Welcome to the thread. How are you doing on the smoke free running? I know that it can  be tough at times. I quit smoking some years ago and it was the best thing that I ever did for myself. Your times are smokin'! I'm doing a 5K in June called Run for the Pies. If you finish under 20 minutes the give you a pie in the chutes. I don't think that I will get a pie this time around but maybe next year.

    Godspeed.

Got started on the 10 mile run last night when the hamstring twinged. So I walked for 65 minutes more while my wife finished the run. I have 4 weeks to get through it before the race in Bighorn.

Floridan: Thanks for the welcome. Actually its going quite well without smoking, although I have noticed some changes with my throat. It seems a bit raw at times if that makes any sense? I'm assuming that its going through a rehabilitation stage of some sorts, lol. A 5K under 20 mins? Wow, thats impressive, and don't worry about not being able to do it right now, like you said, there's always next year. I would go as far as saying, don't worry, there's always another 5K run coming up, doesn't necessarily have to be next year Wink.

LexB:  Sounds like your workout routine is really kickin' into high gear, very nice! How often do you do strength training in between runs? I bet your job is awesome, it sounds very interesting. How do you like it there in BC? I've never been, but might get a chance in the summer/fall this year.

I have perhaps found another reason why my breathing was so whacky yesterday. I had 4 bags of oatmeal for breakfast (too heavy?) and I bet that was part of the  reason why I had pains in my side, haha Laughing.

I'm so excited for my first 5K in June, you have no idea. It's for a good cause as well, the Michigan Parkinson Foundation is having a Walkathon & 5K Run. I am taking 4 of my employees with me and hopefully they'll all be as excited as I am. After that in October is the Detroit Marathon, I am on a relay team, kinda nervous about that as well. My Brooks should arrive tomorrow *sweet*!

    To all a good day!

Great session tonight. 3.8km warm up in 18.20. Aim was 2km effort in better than 8.45 then 2x1km effort in approx 4 min pace. Managed 8.26 for the 2km then 3.51 and 4.04 for the 1 km. The 2nd one was uphill and I had nothing in the tank from about 350, so I was happier with that one. Ran the 2km back to the office. The ride home showed my improvement on the bike as well. Felt horrible but managed 20.5km in in 44 minutes, whereas three weeks ago I wasn't breakng 50.

Probably some longer fartleks on Saturday with long run of about 23km on Sunday. Have a great weekend everybody.

ran a little later in the day today,  but got in 5.1 miles between rain showers.  Ran in 50:41,  which was a little faster than my pace from this weekend,  but not my 10k pace.  I guess i just run a little faster with groups of people.  Do most people feel that way,  that when you are in a race,  or just running with other people, you run faster??? or is it just me.

hope everyone is doing well and running safely.

Ran twice so far this week. Four miles in 31:48 the first time and in 32:06 the second. I am chalking up the slower second run to my legs being sore from a leg workout the night before. It seems to fit with my patterns as I look back on my log. The good news is that my times are coming back down after my injury. I'm not as fast as I was before it but I am getting closer.

Meyerboy- I find that my pace adjusts depending on who I am running with.  I don't run in races but I do sometimes run with other people and I find that I often run slower if my running partner is slower than me.  I'd assume that I'd run faster if I was running with someone who was definitely faster than me but then again, I'd probably slow them down too........

10 miles this am at medium effort. First 2.7 my legs were tight and my shins were really bothering me...not shin splints, the muscle in front of my shins. 13 min/mile. After I warmed up I was able to maintain 11:20 for the next 7.3.

If anyone has an idea how I can warm-up my shins before my run....please pass it on! It always takes about three very slow miles for me to warm-up my legs. That's after I walk 10 min before my run.

5 miles at a medium effort. 8:30 pre mile. I have great difficulty with the last mile, there's a large hill for about 1/4 mile, rising probably 300 feet in elevation. Other than that, kept a steady pace closer to 8 min per mile.

I also find that when I run with somebody else that there is just more effort or spurt. Most of the time I don't even realize it, but it's always a nice surprise. Then again, it makes running by yourself a little "harder", more pressure?!? Wink

The new Brooks came today in the mail, gonna try them out tonight!

    Hi all,

New to this thread but not the boards or the maps!!

Firstly I am aussie and was very overweight! When I was a kid I was a good runner and held school records.

19 weeks ago I couldnt run 500 metres without stopping yet on Sunday I am doing my first half marathon! I can't believe the progress in times and weightloss I am making. I have now dropped almost 13kgs! My regular run is a rolling hill 9km which I now have got down to 47mins.

I did a practise 21km last Sunday and I was in a world of pain never before experienced. It was the furtherest I have ever run and I did it 1hr 57mins. I think I could have gone faster but my quads stiffened badly over the last 3 kms.  I have now gone onto magnesium and Glyclosamine to help recover as my knees for the first time are killing me. Also doing some ITB stretches I found off these boards. I tried to do a recovery run Monday and have learnt a lesson that you dont do that. I couldnt run my quads were so stiff and knees so sore.

Gave myself the rest of the week off except basketball wednesday night and did a really nice easy smooth run this morning 6km in 34 mins. I am not sore at all now and feeling primed for the big race sunday!

I love this thread saving to my favourites now!

     Harro!

    I hate the humidity!

Ran my 5.44 mile loop in 57:57. A tad slower overall but I was able to do a decent job with the bridge.

meyerboy : I most definitely run faster in a race and with or even near other faster runners. At times it is a real challenge to run your own pace although if you are trying to get faster it can be a good tool to keep in the training toolkit.

Harro08: Welcome to the thread. Do you guys really drink Fosters? I like one every so often. What is a real Aussie beer?  _______________________________________________________________________ Floridan

Well I haven't posted for a while.  I felt something pop in my knee when I was on a 16 mile training run for the Vermont City Marathon this weekend.  My knee still isn't 100% and I've gotten in all of the training that I'm going to get done.  I'm going out for the race anyway, and with a few more injured runners that are just hoping to finish at this point.  Wish me luck and I hope that everyone enjoys their runs this memorial day weekend.

I had my first run in my new shoes last night.

    Mens Brooks Infinity

I went out with a friend around 12:30a. Why so late? I work till at least 11:00p-11:30p Tongue out, which doesn't make it easy to stay on track with the running schedule, haha!
Since my friend is a lot shorter than I am, it turned into more of a nice jog for me Wink, but it still gave my legs quite a workout, I can feel it today for some reason. Anyways, 2.6miles with nice weather in the dark=good times.

The question is about the new shoes though. Am I suppose to be "breaking" them in by wearing them just walking around or is there a guideline that I should follow? I've never had to worry about something like this. I was thinking of wearing them to work today for a day, see how they go over?!?
If anyone has any suggestions, I'd appreciate the feedback.

I wish everyone a nice weekend!

Another great 5.1 mile run.  good warmed up for the first mile or so,  reallty pushed the next three, and brought it home easy.  this is only the second time i have run 5 miles on back to back days,  and i feel pretty good.  afterwards did some jump rope and pushups,  i kind of feel like rocky(rocky 2 rocky,  not rocky 6 rocky) after my old school workout. thanks to all who responded to my question about running with others.  it makes sense that you are pacing yourself with those around you.  i just have to find some people who are faster than me!!!

have a great holiday weekend everyone,  stay safe.

Looks like everyone is doing pretty well without me hanging about. I've been pretty busy lately, what with running, getting the garden in order, and working WAY too much. I've been staying on schedule with my training, mostly. I ran 14 miles on Tuesday in exactly 2:20 (exactly a 10 min mile pace). Unfortunately, I keep hitting a wall at about the 13.5 mile mark and just can't get past it. Any suggestions?

I'm running a 5 mile tempo run today (aiming for an 8 minute pace), then a short easy run on Sunday. Next week, I am taking part in the Law Enforcement Torch Run relay, running one of 15 five mile legs. So, I think I may run a shorter long run this week, so I'm not completely dying during the run. And, what luck, there's a big hill almost dead center in my leg of the run. I'm actually excited. I don't get to run many hills around here. Keep running everyone!

I guess I'll start posting here again, even though its gonna be mostly slower runs for awhile. Anyway, I decided I am gonna start building up for a marathon...I have no idea which one. I was gonna try and run sub 1:11:00 in a half (5:25 pace or so) so I could get a top 100 start at Chicago, but there are no fast half marathons in my area and I don't have the funding to take a vacation. So I know I definitely won't be doing Chicago since its already full.

Worst case is that I can't find a marathon I want to do this fall/winter and I just run some local cross country meets and maybe a half marathon somewhere. I'm not too worried about it, I've got a score to settle with the 5k next spring.

Anyway, two weeks ago was my week off. This week is my 'down' week (~75% of my peak mileage during the season) and next week I'll go back to 85 miles and start building again the week after that.

Today I ran 9 miles on some hills at a pretty good clip (6:30s). It was probably a bad idea to go so fast for an easy run, but since I'm not doing any workouts or anything for a couple weeks so I don't need to be too worried about recovery.

    Hi Guys....

well I am on for the half so upping the training. Wednesday was a day of rest, Thursday was strength training, today I went for an hour long ride on my bike and then did 10km (58mins) run. Whew!

One little question, I found that my right knee was sore when cycling (fine when running) - which is surely not s'posed to be the case? It felt like strain or pressure build up, anyone have any ideas? I haven't suffered knee pain running for a long while now so a bit bewildered as to why a 'low impact'bike ride should trigger it.

Kdogg - a half in 1.11 or less... sheeesh... I can only dream - how on earth do you get that fast?

Cheers guys... keep on keepin' on! Hope you all have a great weekend!

KDogg, Where do they grow runners like you? Mars? 'Cause that's just not human. Give me about an hour headstart and you'd still probably catch me!

Did a 5 mile tempo run yesterday. My goal was to get close to 40 minutes. I finished in 40:05, so no complaints. I would have finished in under 40, 'xcept my last mile I slowed down about 25 seconds. Gonna rest the legs today. Probably gonna cut my long run a little short this week to rest my legs for the 5 mile relay I'm doing on Thursday. Keep running.

today for me was a 4 mile run through the hills in 34 minutes. Still working back into long runs after injuring my foot in my first marathon.

    Hey guys and gals,

Just wanted to introduce myself on this forum and start posting as well.

Former xc h.s. runner and unfortunately I found out how fast you lose that ability when you do not continue training. Xc days were not that fast for me, about 18mins for a 5k, but I worked on my fast twitch muscles a lot for sprinting in basketball. Not to mention i lifted too many weights.

Now I work full time and am a dad, so it was easy to get into a habit of not running/working out. Just really started up again about a week ago, am going to start my interval and hill training probably next week but now I am just in the phase of trying to make running a habit. Im taking it slow to prevent injury, so my average miles are about 8- 9mins.

I am actually going to start a marathon training regiment and, if all goes well, I am going to the MensHealth Urbanathlon in Chicago.

Todays run was not that impressive, partially due to the fact that I am recovering from a cold (even though it should be nice weather, Missouri always has to ruin that) and food poisoning. All in all, the course I ran was fairly intense. Huge hills and bad headwind on the way back made it even more dificult but it was a new route as well.

Anyways, look forward to posting mostly every day but next time it wont be as long, I promise. Keep up the running.

Anyway, I ran another easy nine miles today. Earlier this week I found some trails near my house and I try to hit them up a couple times a week even though they aren't really anything special (~2.5 miles worth of decently clear running). I've found that since I am running on the roads a lot more, my knees are hurting way more than they used to, so now I am forced to use these trails.

keep up the great work everyone

Anyone have advice or links for recovery advice for the week such as diet and the sort of running I should do this week. Starting to feel very stiff!

Good luck Nahtus - look forward to your times. Welcome bryan.joiner great to have you on board.

Today was a long run. I did 23.2km in 1.48. It is an out and back and I negative split it which I am happy with. Almost went to sleep on the way back which is a good sign. Felt really good, had another gear which is good for my half on June 22. Was aiming to beat 100mins but mgiht aim for 95 now.

I got somebody to drive ahead about 45mins ahead of me and I pretended it was Kdogg!!!

Today was my workout day - my schedule is kind of off whack. I did one mile warm up changing my pace every minute, which was one heck of a starter. I did a lot of core exercises really hitting my abs, chest and back. I finished with a nice sweat which always makes me feel validated at the gym. I think I am going to run later today but I have a birthday party for my cousins triplets.

*P.S. I did drink a little last night, but the UFC was on and that was my excuse.

Also, I am looking into buying a bike so I can start training for a triathlon as well, anyone have any suggestions for a beginners bike?

Well Im off to the gym this afternoon.  I seem to have cause my self a knee injury, not too sure how, so im on low impact for my legs and gym workouts to hold me over untill i can run again.

Bryan, i read an articl when i was looking at bikes, so i can run a tri, and it made a good point.  For your first Tri the type of bike or set up dosnt make that much differnece seeing that on your first go, your not planning on winning (i know i sure wont, but will have a blast running it) so the type of bike you use dosnt really make a diff.  Just go find a solid bike and use that untill you can be sure.

Just got home for the Vermont City Marathon.  What a great day.  My wife had hurt her hip 3 weeks ago so her pace was way off, but she's doing ok and she made it to the transfer spot.  I ran the second leg or last leg of the Marathon.  I completely distroyed my previous times.  1hr 47 mins 38 sec.  or an 8:13 pace.  My previous best was 2hr 2mins.  I think the training is working, the biking has helped, and this forum to keep me motivated.  Maybe qualifying for Boston before I'm 40 isn't too out of reach.

Lloydb3 how'd you do?  Hope the sun and heat didn't get to you.  It was a little brutal today for the second part of the Marathon.

Next is 4th July in Woodstock, Vt. for a 7.4miler.

Stay safe, and just remember pain is just fear leaving your body...

Pushed the weekly long run to 9.93 miles. That is a distance PR for me. Since it was my long run time was not an issue but I finished in 1:56. It was awesome somewhere around mile 5 I hit this incredible rythm. My focus was tight and running felt effortless. I smiled and smiled all the way home.

phil_duncan:  I would like it to be known to everyone, running in Florida blows. Surface of the sun.

I feel you brother. This week was like running on sauna rocks. Today was nice though. Thank goodness.

Floridan: No mate we dont drink Fosters thats almost purely pushed as an export we would never drink it. Victoria Bitter or Carlton Draught are our common beers of choice!

Ahhh. I see. I figured as much. Thanks for the lead on some authentic brews.

Kdogg - I've never heard the words 'easy', 'nine' and 'miles' used together before!! At what point does that happen?!

Gfinkelde - thanks for the tip about the bike. Funnily enough I spoke to a friend last night who is a keen cyclist and he said the same thing. So as soon as I have had a shower and done my laundry I am off to the local bike shop to get the guys to help me sort it!

Floridan - Careful with the VB - I've had several aussie mates try to introduce me to the stuff and it leaves a mean hangover in the morning. In fact if I remember right it has some sort of nickname to that effect!!!

Floridan & Phil Duncan - I don't know HOW you guys do it in that heat... summer weather here in Vancouver is hurting me - and that's no where near your temps without the humidity. You have my utmost respect guys!

Had my longest run ever this week. Just did a 12.6k loop around North Van. Some mean hills in there and it's quite hot again today (I underestimated how much water I was going to need) so I wasn't as quick as I'd like, THIS TIME (this was a distance run, next week will be faster!!), at a 10.10 pace (took me about 1hr20mins). Despite my slower pace I am happy with the effort as it was tough going but I did it and I enjoyed it. On top of that , it was my 4th run this week (as opposed to the usual 3 runs per week)... which I think leaves me with 24.25 miles this week - which is awesome. If I can keep it up I should be clearing 100 miles per month soon.

Sweet! Right-o, off to get my bike sorted.

Hope you all had a great weekend

    Lex

Lex - ya know, about five years ago my longest run ever was eight miles and I ran it in 1:20:00 . Then I got to college and we ran eight miles the day before a race and I figured that I'd have to start getting my act together if I wanted to be fast.

Anyway, until this past year when I really started logging mileage, eight miles was always a moderate day. So I guess longer distances becoming easier just comes with time spent on the roads (or track or treadmill or whatever).

Training for today was another nine miler. I was a nerd today and was playing video games all day, so I put the run off until the night time. It took a lot of will power to get out and run, but once I did I was really happy I went out. The run was awesome, I was going a lot faster than I normally do on my easy days (probably a bad idea), but it felt way easier. These are the kind of runs that make all of the crappy runs you gotta deal with worth it.

Next week, I'm bumping my mileage back up to my peak from track and then I will start adding mileage each week after that. (except for my 'easy' weeks of course)

After somewhat crappy day at work my night turned to wonderful!
I promised myself I would try for the best time I could get in a 5K and take out all of the frustration from work today via running Laughing. I have never tried so hard but it payed off big time.

I ran a 20:29 for a distance of 3.12 miles, thats 6:34 average pace and 9.14 average speed. I was trying to move at quite a clip and told myself that 21:30 would be awesome, and then this, wow. I am so proud of myself, lol. And yes, the new shoes feel fantastic!

Can't wait for my official 5K in 2 weeks.

    Happy Memorial Day everyone!

    ~H2!

PS: My calves really hurt=normal? Stomach is all tight, too :(

thats awesome H2 that you ran so fast in a practice run, I'm guessing you will run faster yet once you enter into your race because the whole environment of a race is so conducive to running fast. I dunno what to say about your calves, my guess is that it will go away after a couple of days...just make sure you are stretching them after your runs and if it actually hurts badly, do not overstretch it, just gentle stretching is the most you should do

btw, there used to be a race here in southern Indiana called the H2 (Hoosier 200 relay race) and it was awesome...so you chose a good name :)

I ran 11 miles today. Like I said in my last post, my transition week is over and now I gotta start bumping my mileage up to where it needs to be to run a really fast marathon. I still don't know which marathon I want to do or even if I will do one this fall/winter, but that mostly depends on where I end up for law school in the fall....I'm so ready for my application cycle to be over so I can make that determination

Howdy all - first run today in two weeks. Did an easy 3.18 miles in 32:59. I've been letting my shin heal. The shin felt fine, but my right knee was a bit twingy. Feels like the early stages of the issues I had this past January with the same knee. I guess I should break out all the excersizes the PT gave me and get a little more disciplined about doing them. Iced down the knee then did some yard work, then iced some more. Back to work tomorrow after a three day weekend.

    Hi all,

Not feeling as sore today but still a bit of knee soreness and hip soreness. I must admit finding it very hard to get motivated today to go for my run.

Can anyone tell me if I wish to improve my half marathon times aim towards one day doing a marathon should I be running more than a half marathon as my long run weekly in training?

I had my first can of Coke in a long while last night....was great but the guilt!!!

Gfinkelde - mate I'm in Melbourne. The half was at Williamstown with Sri Chinmoy.

    How about you?

In Melbourne as well. I am training for the Melbourne marathon. I think you might be in a similar position to where I was last year. The run to the g was my first half, and then I did the marathon last year. I just built up slowly, but this year I have done more speed work, and I have seen my average km speed come down from over 5 min/km to about 4.40. Are you doing the Run Melbourne half this year.

How was the Sri Chinmoy pancakes. I had looked at doing their full. Apparently they are pretty well run.

Yea  I booked the Run Melbourne Half last night. I want to do the Melb Marathon but wonder if I am to new to running to do that. I think speed work is the next step for me but I havent really got my head around any of it yet. I have run a couple of Sri Chinmoy races now and have to say they are as good as any in terms of how they run. The best part is generally less people to battle in the crush, so you get a rhythm quicker and those pancakes, bananas, apple crumble, energy bars - very well looked after! There was a real festive feel afterwards on Sunday with awards and spot prizes.

Also brilliant having drink stations every 2km with electrolyte and water. Great course running along the water.

I think I was still coming down from the high today and havent run 2 days in a row. I just couldn't do it. Maybe we should get together for a run?

    Quickie post.

I had a good morning recovery run of 5.5 miles. I dislike recovery runs but today wasn't too bad since I ran with my wife and kept her company. It's fun to play coach!!Wink

Slow run today. Felt a bit sore after Sundays long run so did 3 laps of the tan, about 11.5km. Did it in 58 minutes which felt really easy. Good to know I can run easy if I need to.

Happy to join up Harro. gfinkelde@hotmail.com and we can see if we can organise a catch up

Hey Nahtus, Congrats on your PB!  The heat really started to hit me on the second half of the course, and it wasn't as flat a course as I had been told.  I finished the Vermont City Marathon in a PB of 4:26:05.  10:09 miles for 26.2.

I really wish that I had done better, but I finished and the course was really nice and scenic.  I loved the crowds around mile 17/18 in that little neighborhood.

This was a fun race, but I think that I am going to stick to running halfs for a while.  I really enjoy that distance alot more.  Already signed up for the Philly half marathon in September.  Going to try to beat my PB on this course of 1:42:20.  I think that I should be able to walk down steps comfortably by then.

By the way Nahtus, I wore a T-Shirt that had that quote on it when I went to register for the race and the pasta dinner.
