First of all I feel for all of you who have to deal with such cold weather. It's been mid 50's here for weeks and aside from the insane wind it's pretty nice.

    Recap of the weekend:
Friday - 1 mile race in 4:18.08. A decent time but i should be running faster according to workouts. I decided that I do not like these indoor tracks with such an rediculous bank, it's great for sprints not so much for distance mainly just because its hard to keep from falling with 20 guys sqeezed into lane 1.

Saturday - 3k race in 8:34 (4:35/mile). This was my 2nd 3k ever and i was pretty tired from the day before so this time was a good bit better than expected.

The invitational portion was an incredible meet to watch with elite collegiate and professional athletes in every event.

thats a good 3k and a pretty alright mile, congrats on those

for me, it was just another bad race. (16:08 5k) I'm starting to get to the point where I can't wait to retire from collegiate competition, this is just getting stupid.

Although, if and when things fall into place for me, its gonna be big.

For soemone who has played decent level sport and is now getting on - rememebr you are a long time retired. If you enjoy it keep going.

Anyway after playing cricket on Saturday, I was usnure whether to go 8km or 15km on Sunday. I was feeling pretty good at the 6km turn off so decided to keep on going for the longer run. My time was pretty good. I ran 1.13.29 for 15km, which I am pretty happy with, but felt horrible towards the end. probably to be expected as it is the furthest i have run sicne the marathon in october. 40 days to my 14km run, but that is the first step to my second marathon this october.

Sorry to hear about all those running on ice and snow. I got sunburnt on the run yesterday. Was about 25c when I ran, on its way to a beautiful 32c day. Summer wont be too far away for you guys, and I will have the cold - but no ice or snow for my runs.

Getting jealous of the sunny/warm weather posts.  Many are putting up some impressive times too.  Here in CT we are starting to get the winter blues.  The temp has only climbed above 40 deg for  3 or 4 days in the past month......and all of those days were cloudy/rainy.  Yesterday was bright and sunny but 22 deg.  I was really struggling in the motivation dept......and It was everything I could do to get myself out the door again.....but to my surprise I was cruising....once I got about a mile into it.  I needed to do 9 miles at a 7:39 pace.....and was able to cover it in a 7:26 pace.

I probably should have held back a bit though because I felt it during my long run today.   Another cloudy day...but a bit warmer around 37 degrees...although the wind and light rain made it feel a bit colder than that.  I covered 19 miles at a 8:25 pace.

Just two months to go until Boston.  Please....no Nor'easter this year!

Finally we hit 50 degrees here in Northern Vt.  Of coarse there was rain to start with, but I just completed my 2.6 mile recovery run at 9pm tonight.  It's only 35 degrees out, no wind, but lots of puddles.  I'm so ready for winter to be over.  My pace was 8:45 which is a lot faster than I'd like on my recovery runs, but I felt really good.  7 miler tomorrow.  Probably on the treadmill seeing that there's snow in the forecast.

Wow, seems to be a bit of a drop-off in postings. Hopefully everyone is still at it. First, an update on the planned Saturday run. I was hoping to do an easy 2 mile recovery run when I got out of work at 6:30pm. Then I wound up working a little late. I didn't get home till 3:00am Sunday morning!!! So I wound up skipping that little run. My sleep schedule is still out of whack.

Today, I  got my scheduled 8-miler in. Felt a little dehydrated going into it, so I planned on taking it easy. Then, at the 1.5 mile mark, I turned west and hit a wall of wind! 20-30 mile per hour wind dropped the 25 degrees down to about a 5 degree wind chill.I was running into the wind till about the 4.5 mile mark. Then, when I turned out of the wind (what a relief!!) I was worn out. The last 3.5 miles I was dragging. I finished it in 1:35:55, which comes out to a 11:58 pace. I guess this is okay for a base run, but I was unsatisfied with the effort it took. I'm gonna be sore tomorrow!

Tomorrow is a rest day (thank god. it's only supposed to be 16 degrees) , then 3 miles on Wednesday. That will break the 100 mile mark for the year. Might not sound like much, but I probably didn't run 100 miles all year last year! Good luck to all with your upcoming runs.

    Hi All,

Been out of the loop for a while as I have had company and have not been able to run... but the week off was good for me as I ran a PB on my 4 mile run of 30:40 which seems to match well the last three treadmill runs that I did (5.2 miles in 38 minutes flat then 5.2 miles in 37:06) so maybe I'm getting faster or maybe tapering does work.  Wink  I do know that the treadmill at my work has become more of a liability as I cannot run as fast on it as I sometimes want to.  Maybe I'll put up a sign with some of KDogg's distances and times and hang it in front of the treadmill for some inspiration...

The weather might not be great here but at least today i was running outside and not wearing my true cold weather kit.  I also keep reminding myself that "at least I am not in Winnipeg" (a high of -28 C/ -18 F today)... I had been living there before I moved down to "balmy New England".

Yesterday I did a short am run and a longer pm run both at an easy pace. Total: ~14mi

Today was another windy workout. There hasn't been a day with wind under 15mph in probably 2 weeks.
    3 x 1 mile with 3min rest btw (4:47,4:45,4:39)
It turned out to be a pretty easy workout, the pace felt smooth and easy on all of them.

Another two laps of what is becoming one of my favourite little runs. I have done more scenic beach and park runs, but for running sakes it really hits the spot. Did 2 laps total 5.2 kms in 22.45. Very happy with that considering the legs were a bit heavy after Sundays run. Of my group of 7 who will be competing in the charity run - www.r4k.com.au for those who are interested - I will be the strongest over the distance, but over the 5km I have ebcome my mates whipping boy. If I can stick with his faster shorter sped, hopefully it will hold me in good stead for the longer distance as well.

Warning, hot temperature gloat following, stop reading if you are struggling in the depths of winter. 34c during the day, actually ran with the top off yesterday. kept the neighbours indoors!!! Horrible weather today though.

Keep the postings coming, it is great to see how some of the real guys do it

I wuss'd out again; went to the treadmill.  I guess it's just too close to my 1/2 marathon to be running out on choppy-iced sidewalks and dodging puddles.  I'd hate to take 2weeks off right now just to heal my legs if I hurt them.

Total of 7 miles tonight.  Ran the 1st 2 miles and last 2 miles at 8:30 pace and ran my middle 3 miles at a 7:40 pace.  Did the whole 7 miles in 56:54 mins.  I feel a little tired, but really pumped to have done it in an avg. of 8:10 pace.

Day of rest tomorrow with a 3miler to follow and my 9 miler on Sat.

    Run Safe everyone.

    Good morning, MapMyRun Community!

It's been a while, but I finally got out last night for my first run in five or more weeks after my third Achilles tendonosis flare. I did my 5k route in 27 minutes and change, with no tendon pain. I felt reasonably strong, but I'm sure not in running shape right now. At the advice of the PT I'm not pushing anything, speed or distance, and will stay at this level for some time, I expect.

The big differences for me this time will be that I''m going to continue my cross training with trips to the gym 3x/week, as I think it'll do me a lot of good, and I have to be there anyway, as my son started Judo during my running hiatus, and it meets 3x/week. While at the gym I'll continue with the recumbent bike, and have started circuit training, hoping to develop more core strength.

I'm also breaking in a new pair of orthodics, which should help align my knee, and even out my gait.

Good to be back. Here's hoping I don't blow it.

BROKE 100 MILES TODAY!!!! In just a month and 20 days! I know that might not seem like much to some of you, but that's really exciting to me! Unfortunately, it comes on the heels of me getting yet another cold. I've been miserably sick more times than I care to count this winter!

Did 3 super easy miles today with my wife, pushing our two kids in our running stroller. We ran on our local rail  trail, which was mostly clear, but not totally. I didn't really keep time, but I think it was about 38 minutes. Hopefully we have better conditions in a few weeks for my first 5k race of the year.

Welcome back, changingground.  Just ease into it and you should be fine! Hopefully you can still make Chicago in October!

Big day today Did 8km interval run. 4 minutes normal then 1 minute pushing it a little bit. Completed it in 36.04 which is good. After cricket training tonight a mate and I did some sprint square work. on a 40 x 40metre square we sprinted 1 leg jog 3, sprint 2 legs jog 2, sprint 3 and jog 1 then sprint 4 legs. We did 4 reps of this. Hopefully give me a little bit more speed. Next run will be sunday morning. HAve a good weekend guys

Ran really early this morning. I felt groggy from the Tuesday 20k. I ran 14k this morning at 4:30 pace. I'm proper knackered to be honest. Frightened of burn out kicking in. Feb and March are my big push months for the marathon in April. Got to stay with it. I have to run tomorrow (20K) and the and 35k on Sunday. Going to take it easy during the Sunday run, just get the distance in and take in the beautiful Swiss scenery!

    Hello Runners.

Long time listener, first time caller!!!

Started running in October,  at the age of 30,  after a startling summer if medical issues,  both short term and long term. I began this to drop my blood pressure, and lose a little weight. I have since ran 5 days a week(almost every week) since,  and have participated in a couple of road races,  mostly in NYC through the NYRR. Anyway,  my normal run is from my apt,  into central park,  loop the bridle path,  and back home. It is about 3.6 miles, give or take, according to the mapmyrun maps.  Anyway, today was my first run with a digital timer,  and I think just checking it a couple of times helped my motivation. I ran the 3.6 in about 36:30. I had previously been timing myself with my diving style watch,  just spinning the crown,  but I figured this would be better. Was it ever.

I think this forum is great,  and can't wait to make it part of my day.

Yesterday was a short a.m. run and a longer p.m. run to total ~14 for the day at an easy pace (~7min). Normally the a.m. runs would be on interval days but coach decided to switch up the workouts this week and I cant change my a.m. run cause of classes.

Today was 10x200m with walk across rest (a little over 1min) +2mi up/down.
Ran ~27's on all of them. It felt really good to finally do some true speedwork. It made me glad I'm not in the group with the 5k and 10k guys who did repeat 800's today. If your having a bad day they can be rough.

    Good job everyone, keep running!

5 miles today on the treadmill (ugh) with some circuit training afterward.   Tomorrow is a day of rest....which is good because a snow storm is coming in and should last until Sat morning.  I'm keeping an eye on some hip pain.......something I haven't experienced before.  It flared up the day after my long run last Sun.  Took the day off on Mon and then biked on Tue.  No problems with it yesterday and today.  Hopefully it his here and gone.

Yesterday evening I ran my standard 5k with my former running partner. It was great to get out an run with someone else, but I don't think we made any speed records. While cool (meltwater from the sunny day was freezing on the sidewalks) it was nice to be out under a full moon.

Tonight's a gym night. I'm going to cut back on the total distance of cycling and try to spend a little more time on strengthening my core. I've gotta say, adding the run back into the mix really makes the effort of 50 minutes of cycling seem much greater.

Today was another pure speed workout and another windy day. 600, 400, 200 with 10 min rest, +30min run in the a.m.
    1:28 ,55.0, 26.1
This workout wasnt as fast as I expected. Being passed by some of the guys that are in the 5k-10k group really hurt my pride. It was a good reminder to stay humble when you win and to not make excuses for yourself when you dont. I'm ashamed to say one of my friends called me out on this today, I'll have to thank him for it later.

Ran another 20k yesterday morning. It was a slog with the temp getting up to 15c and me being overdressed. I ran the first 10k nice and steady in 44m and the second 10k in 41m. Going to rest and ice before my long run tomorrow. Including tomorrow I have three 35k runs before the marathon. I have mixed feelings of excitement and a touch of dread when it comes to the mammoth runs. Looking forward to some short speed work next week!

Couldn't run yesterday due to whiteout conditions in NYC,  but needed a day off after 5 straight. Ran this morning on the icepack of the bridle path.  a lot of people were out and running on the transverses in CP,  but  i always run the bridle path,  so I stuck to it. It was a little strange though,  as the only people I saw/passed were on cross country skis. Not a site you expect to see while jogging in Manhattan. Anyway,  was a little tentative because of the ice,  but still completed my 3.6 miles in a respectable(for me) 37 and change.  I am definitely within grasp of my goal for this month,  which is 70 miles,  and look forward to bumping up my run to 4 plus miles.

10 miles today at a 7:35 pace.  Temp was chilly (32 deg), and there were a few slush hazards (7 inches of snow yesterday).  I got slush-sprayed by a few cars...but nothing too bad.  I saw a redtail hawk scoop up a squirrel and haul it away.......gruesome but cool.  Everything felt fine when I was done (no hip issues which is good).   Another 10 miles on tap for tomorrow...but at a nice easy pace.

Looks like all the posters are hitting their targets or are making back in the swing after rehabbing.  Way to go!

Finished a good week.  Just 6 weeks to go until my 1st 1/2 marathon for this year.  Still snow and ice on the ground, but it did get up to 32 degrees today.  And yes; still wussing out on the treadmill.  I hate the feeling of never going anywhere, but I've got to get my miles in.  Did 9 miles with an avg. 8 1/2 pace.  I felt really good and I'm meeting my goal of being under 2 hrs for this race.

It was 28mph with 40mph gusts when we ran and i'm glad i did it early cause now it's 38mph with 47mph gusts!!! haha you gotta love West Texas...

I'm well battered. I got through my 36.2k long slog. The first few km were hard as my shin splints decided to kick in for the first time in ages. The pain subsided after about 7/8k. The middle portion was really good - ran on pace at 4.35 per k, fabulous sunshine with a light breeze and was out in shorts and t-shirt. 16c. Perfect for a nice long run. Icing and stretching everything for the rest of the day while I watch Chelsea vs Spurs in the Carling Cup final . A well earned day off tomorrow. I'm proper knackered, but feel satisfied I got through the distance in a decent time.

Still training for the end of the cricket season as well as starting to get more into running, so today I had a light run down to the beach where there are some great steps. Nice and even heights, in blocks of 15/16, so it is easy o get a rhythym. I did 10 reps going up 5 x 2 steps at a time, 2 x 1 step at atime, 2x 3 steps at a time, and because I am a bit of a masochist i finished off with 1 rep jumping up two feet aa time. Felt really good. Will do a longer run tomorrow.

We had some very nice weather yesterday (64 degrees and breezy), so after returning from a snowshoe in the mountains with my wife I decided to get a jump on the week and ran 3.25 miles. I'm still in the "taking it slowly" stage of returning to running, and have yet to see the PT since picking running back up, but think it's going fairly well. My right calf, the intial site of my achilles problem, feels pretty good. The left is tender, but the ortho said I'll likely feel both for another coulple of months.

    Hi All,

Man do I feel GREAT!! I just ran another PB on my 4 mile work loop... 29:56!! I had always wanted to see if I could break 31 minutes for this run and I had a long term goal of breaking 30 minutes but that was a sort of "yeah eventually I'll get there" kind of goal. Well, today I did it. My split was 15:06 so at that point I thought I might have a chance of doing it.

The interesting thing about this run was that it was preceeded with a horrible treadmill run on Friday. I had just finished a back workout and wanted to get some running in as I have been slacking off lately and I knew I wouldn't get any running in on the weekend as I had some company coming over. Well, suffice it to say that it was a horrible 4 mile run that hurt the whole way.

Changingground-good to hear you are back on the streets.

Today I skipped my morning run, for  some reason I just couldn't get out of bed. This afternoon was a few 300's on the indoor track. It was pretty nasty outside. Not cold/wet nasty, but 75F with a ton of wind and dust nasty. Anyway here's how it went
10x300m with 100m walk rest and averaged ~44.0

Tomorrow is a 1-hour run and Wednesday is a short 15min fartlek then it's off to Nebraska for the conference championships. I think I may forgo my morning run on Wednesday becuase I've been feeling some twinges in pretty much every piece of connective tissue in my legs. Then by Friday I'll be fresh and ready to roll.

Good work everyone! Runs and times  look awesome!  Good job on your PR GrantB.  ChiggyXC, it must be tough dealing with all that warm weather :} Having lived in Amarillo, though, I can relate, that dust-filled wind sucks! Good luck in NE (my birthstate, by the way). Let us know how you do.

I had to take a few days off this week (from Thursday till today, really), due to the worst cold I think I've ever had in my life. I had to skip a 6 miler and a 3 miler. Today, I got back on schedule. I ran 9 miles (actually 9.27) in 1:50:12 (11:52 pace). I'm still feeling the cold, so I didn't w want to push too much on the intensity. This is my longest run so far, and I am pretty pleased to have finished it. I wound up moving really slow in the last mile or so, as my hip flexors got really tired. That said, my mood was excellent throughout the run, even when I realized I made a wrong turn somewhere and had to guesstimate where the 9 mile mark was.

Tomorrow's a rest day (gotta go to court), then an easy three miler on Wednesday.

Back out again this morning. I did a 14.5k very easy run. I'm still really stiff from Sunday's long run, plus I stupidly overdressed again and was overheating! Great Run Today!!!!

Mild winter conditions in NYC today, high 30's and a little humid. Felt great from the start,  ran my 3.6 loop in 36 flat. My best tie ever. Could have donw it faster,  but I was stopped at about 5 traffic lights. I made up for that by pretty much sprinting the last half mile,  or for locals,  across town from park to 2nd ave, at about 90%. Felt great,  and am doing great with my 70 mile month goal,  2runs in the next three days will clinch it,  and then I am pumping my goal for march to 80 miles,  and upping my run to 5 miles a day...hopefully.

There is a guy from NYC on the Runner's World forums who is a pretty accomplished runner and goes by the name of Squirrel (for reasons unknown to me). He has a blog named "Running with the Squirrel" in which he frequently (well, sort of) mentions his running route through the city. He's a decent writer, and a good runner. Maybe you can find some route inspiration from his blog. Here's the link- http://squirrel1-1.blogspot.com/ . His milages are way out of our league (he's a sub-three marathoner), but a run is a run, eh?

Decided to start writing after reading for a couple of months.  Hey Chiggy, I grew up in Lubbock..live in Phoenix now.

Had knee surgery last year, so I'm just getting back into exercising...ran track way back in high school, but was a hiker/walker (when I lived in Michigan).  A friend from work got me into 5ks, ran my first one recently. Now I'm hooked!  If I can just get past the run/walk phase, I'll be good to go!  I am stoked by all your stories, so keep 'em comin!  Are you all guys?  Sure sounds like it.  I'm female...hope that's ok.Laughing

westconn, I hope the battleship is docked by land! changingaround, thanks for the link on the Squirrel. I did some much needed speed work today. It hurt, but I'm glad I did it. I ran 4 x 1600m at 5.30, 5.25, 5.21 and 5.23 with 800m jogs after each repeat. The last one was dead hard. After that I did a flat(ish) 8k at a steady 4:10k pace. I was too tired to do the hill reps afterwards, so I called it a day. I have to do a half marathon distance run tomorrow using the fartlek technique. Keep up the hard work everyone. Cheers

    Hey Changingground.-

Thanks for the input. I'll check this guy out, and read his blog.

In other news,  I ran today, one of the coldest mornings that I have run. It was 20 out, with a windchill of 8. Thats right, single digits.  I put on wind pants and a shell over my gear,  and froze my face off for the first mile or so. Luckily the sun was out,  so it didn't feel so bad. I have been running around 36 or so(36:04 today, 35:49 yesterday, 3617 day before) so I feel like its probably time to increase the distance. I hit my goal of running 70 miles in this month, and a short month at that, and have set a goal for 77 next month. I figured that would just mean I would have to run two more days at 3.6 miles to cover it. Should be pretty attainable.  Looking forward to the 4 mile(Colon Cancer Challenge) in 2 weeks in Central park..I signed up for the 4 mile,  but they also have a 15k, but I am not sure I am ready for that.

Txaz- speaking for myself, all are welcome. There seems to be quite a range of runners here, as you've likely seen. We have had a couple women participants, I think, but one is injured and keeping away for the time being. Either way, the testosterone hasn't gotten too thick in here yet...

Where were you in Michigan? I met my wifre there while in school.

I lived in Grand Rapids for 4 yrs after marrying my hubby (job moves us around).  Quite a culture shock after growing up in West Texas, that's for sure.  Been in Arizona for 10 years, doubt if I'll ever move from here.  The weather is awesome.  Ran midmorning today (70 degrees) and not a cloud in the sky.  We live next to mountains, so I alternate hiking one day and running the next.  Used to be able to cut back on eating and exercise a little and BOOM, ten pounds would drop off.  But now, at 44 it sucks!  I have to work extra hard.  Still, it's hard to turn down a beer!! Tongue out

    Welcome Txaz and other newbies.

Had a good run tonight. My regular running partner kid was a bit sick so he stayed home - and I was out on my own. It was a bit windy and the into te wind stretch was a bi more open which sucked, but apart from that it was a nice temp for running - about 18C.

Ran 2 laps of a course that amoutns to a total of 10.2km, and did that in 47.26. For the first time in a while I could sustain a quicker pace leading into the finish which was pleasing. I checked bac through my log for similar runs I have done and it seems to be about a minute quicker than i have done which is good cosndiering I had no company. I had done this run before mapmy but I dont think it as as quick as last night. All looking good for the March 30th charity run

Txaz, Wierd, it's almost like you and I have taken exactly opposite paths. I lived in Phoenix about 14 years ago (86th Ave, near Indian School Rd), then I moved to W Texas (Amarillo), and now I live in Michigan (Bay City). I covet your temps now, but not in August! Welcome to the board.

Great runs everyone! I've been out of commision for the last few days. TThe day after my 9.27 miler (which, in hindsight, I felt a little off during), I went in to work for some training, and promptly started vomiting, which didn't stop until yesterday at about 9am (gotta love the flu). So, I wound up postponing a 2 mile recovery run till today, which I wound up doing on the dreadmill. I ran it in 17:25 (about an 8:41 pace), and felt good. Tomorrow is a 6 miler, then two more on Friday. That will put me at 120 miles for the year, and 68 miles for the month.

Good luck on upcoming runs. And hopefully everyone else can avoid the flu.

Dan, That is weird...were you military?  I assume you are a cop now. My brother and lots of our friends are law enforcement.   You would not recognize the area you lived in.  Cotton fields have been replaced by Cardinals Stadium (Super Bowl was there a month ago) and I work next door to that at the arena, home of the Phoenix Coyotes Hockey Team.  I run a 3 mile loop around it all sometimes. There is a 5k there later in March, I'll be there..

Ran 3.5 great miles today, but now knee is not happy with me..nothing a little Tylenol can't fix.  Busy weekend coming up, have to fit in a run or hike somewhere.

Txaz, the stadium is over on the west side now? I remember going into the field at 91st Ave and snatching fresh watermelons off the vine after school! I used to go to Cardinals games at SunDevils stadium all the time!  I went to high school at Westview, over on 107th Ave, then moved to Amarillo during my junior year. I was military after high school, but out now. And, yes, I am a cop now. I think I'll have to get out to PHX again soon, I've heard it's grown a ton. Dan

I felt rougher than a builder's hand this morning. I broke down after just 5k into a 21.1k run and I had to hobble back home. My shins are in agony and I've damaged my achilles heel again. I'm taking a week off from my training timetable to rest my legs. It's too close to the marathon to risk it and my body is crying out for rest. Have a good weekend everyone - listen to your body!
