    Hi there!

I've been running for about 2 years now, and I've finally buckled down and formed a marathon training plan.  I run 4-5 days (one day intervals, one day easy-peasy, one day tempo, one long day.)  I'm also an avid reader of running propaganda.

Anyway, I'm getting discouraged.  In my beginners guide books, I hear testimonials (and on websites etc...) of runners training at 6-7 min/mile.  I cannot even imagine it.  I'm stretching it to do a 8:45 min/mile for about 4-5 mile runs.  I can't even imagine running less than a 9:30 min/mile on my long days (10 miles +)

How long will it take for my time to improve?

By the way, my intervals are: 1 mile warm-up, 3 min x 6 vo2max (about 3 miles total), 1 mile cool-down.  Tempos are at just above aerobic heart rate for 4-5 miles.

I'd love some light at the end of the tunnel..

    Thanks a bunch,

Julie (who's new to the forums)

Once you reach the light at the end of the tunnel you either realize that's the fastest you're ever going to make it through that tunnel or you turn around and do it again knowing you can go faster the next time. I would say you could probably make some improvement just tweaking your intervals a bit. Instead of doing 3 minutes 6 times do 4 minutes 5 times. And it's even one less interval. Wink

Use the guide books as a guide, but go by feel more than anything. Find a good group to do your speedwork with. I always thought that I would hate running with others, but it has improved my times and pace immensely. A good group will push you as well as support you on your quest. Just be careful at the same time. Pushing too hard will only lead to injuries. The friendly competition is a lot of fun and if your having an off day the support is great.

    Good luck.
