    Hi There,

I've been running regularly since the end of January as part of a major life over haul! Right now I am running between a 9 and 10 min/mile  on average, 3 times a week, usually 2x5 or 6k and one longer run at about 11k or so. I am trying to increase my speed all the time and am increasing length by 10% per week roughly (on the long run - the 2x5k are slowly increasing in distance and speed). I have just done a 10k race and I am enjoying running so much I am looking at a couple more challenges  to keep me working towards something.

So I have found a 14k race in September and a half marathon in mid october that I really want to do. (I'm building for a full marathon next spring). Can anyone recommend any good marathon training schedules I can find online? Most of them seem to start 14 weeks before the race - do I just keep doing what I am doing until then?

While I am not in the 'serious runner' category I am looking to get the best time I can, not just finish it - although this is my first so I would be happy with finishing it - and am therefore looking to train properely and safely.

In addition to running I also do circuit training (resistence) / weights twice a week, kickboxing 2-3 times a week and swimming whenever possible (once or twice a week usually).

    Cheers

    Lex

    run 3-4 times a week

incorporate a long run one day a week and add 10% to it each week (work up to about 9-10 miles)

    sleep

    eat

If you are interested, I'd be happy to post/email my half marathon training schedule. It's my first half marathon (May 3).  I'm running about the same speed as you too.  It's about a 10 week schedule (but, can be lengthened if needed or wanted.)

As for ian's comments, I can't stress enough, how important sleep is!  It's amazing how much better I run when I get more than 7.5 hours.

    Hi J,

I am in much the same boat doing about 5 min kms now and have been doing a 15km per week as well as shorter runs between 6-8km. I would also love any advice on getting to a half and then full marathon.

Here's one I used to train for my marathon this weekend (scroll down the page and you'll see it):

He also has a half -training schedule too:

I also use his run-walk-run method.  I did 2 different 20 milers and the first without the second with.  Using that method, I finished faster and recovered faster as well.

I used Hal Higdon's half marathon training schedule for my first half this past February. It worked great for me.

Hi there... I have 26 weeks until the half and found this 26 week programme. I was wondering if you guys could offer your verdict / some constructive criticism on it? Or possible give me a pointer or two to adjust it to a half marathon (programme is for a full)? http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/sports/run/971152.html Cheers Lex

I also used the Hal Higdon training schedule for my first Half marathon in April.  I felt confident going in but I'm sure made some rookie mistakes that caused me to struggle the last 3 miles.  After a couple of weeks of analyzing I believe I went out to fast (really wanted to break 2 hours......missed it by 3 minutes), did not properly eat prior to start, and probably overhydrated (needed to stop for restroom 9 miles in).  The training schedule would have probably worked fine if not for rookie mistakes.  Looking forward to another half.  I'll keep reading to further educate myself.

    Good luck!!
