Cycling Forum: Cycling from Carlsbad CA to Portland OR (not along the coast)

My biggest challange as I see it is getting around LA.  After LA is the desert to Bakersfield.  The rest of the route looks pretty good.  I hope to leave about 15 June 2008 (yes, I know it will be bloody hot).

I am a very experienced cycling tourist (see "Hot Coals and Brandy" in "Miles from Nowhere" by Barb Savage) but I would like some tips about the roads between Corana through Lancaster to Bakersfield.
