What To Do

I guess I got pretty self-confident. I wasn't pushing myself too hard with running, but I got into a regular rhythm of running twice a week. I started adding in morning dog walks to be able to log miles for our local YMCA "1000 mile club" - 1000 miles in a year. I was all set to reach the goal this year. I easily surpassed 50 miles last month, and I was all set to make 100 this month. Besides daily dog walks, I was training to run a 10k next month. Then out of the blue, my asthma (which was totally under control and almost forgotten) hit. Apparently my allergies really flared up last week, and I had an awful weekend.

So here I am now, off from exercise for 2 weeks (!) and waiting. I actually walked the dog today, so I won't go totally 0 on my miles. And I am feeling better each day with my new medication. But I when I do exert myself, I can feel the wheezing starting, and then the uncomfortable coughing and then .... It's just a bummer to have to take it easy after I have been so active -- running 3 days a week and working out with weights twice. The problem with patience is that it takes so long to learn. Ok, I'm just kind of going off now ... I guess to breathe it out. Any comments welcome, but none required. I'm just hoping that everything clears up in 2 weeks so that I can at least make an attempt for the 10k. You know, just survival ... not so much any kind of record. Oh, but it will be my first, so whatever I do it's an instant PR, right?

    Hi,

    i feel sorry for you.

Can't you train in a fitnesscenter for a few weeks?
It would give you the possibility to get your miles without the inconvenience of the allergy ?
Depends on what you 're allergic to, not?

     Get well soon!

Hey, thanks for the sympathy, but I thought about it and decided that I'm pretty much being a whiny baby about the whole thing. I mean, my legs could be broken and I could be put up for months instead of just out of running for a couple of weeks because of breathing problems! I am thankful that I can still walk and get around.

The way I understand my asthma, the allergies just triggered it. Now that the asthma is triggered, physical exertion in general exacerbates the breathing problems, resulting in wheezing and coughing. Once I get my breathing back under control with the asthma meds, I'll ease back into physical exercise, whether indoors or out. Our allergy season in Ohio has just been pretty brutal the last couple of weeks. And even if I still have allergies, I'm hoping that anything asthma related in my lungs will be under control with the new meds. I'm pretty sure everything will work out ok. Wink
