Anyone here run with a backpack? I sometimes see people doing this and all I can think of is how annoying it must be. Does it chafe your back?

I ask because I was thinking of running home from work in stead of taking the subway. But I'd have to change out of my work clothes and shoes and carry them in a backpack if I do. I just foreseeing this being extremely irritating. What are your thoughts on this?

I had to do that last year when my bike was stolen. I just held the shoulder straps with my hand to keep it from bouncing too much. It made it a bit hotter but there was no chafing or anything like that. I mean it's not like running free but it's not extremely irritating either. But I might have just been so irritated about the stolen bike that I didn't notice.

You can also get running backpacks from someplace like Road Runner that are smaller and fit more firmly to your back. I havn't tried it, just seen them.

I run 15K to and from work with a backpack - i tried a lot of irritating ones that did bounce about and rub, but finally settled o and inov8 18 pack - very light, comfortable, plenty of space with waist and chest straps and hand pockets for keys etc.

I researched this inov8 pack a bit. It looks very comfortable actually, and it seems it would serve my purpose well. Thanks for the replies!

I find that running with hydra-packs is a more efficient way to carry water  than those silly water belts... you get more capacity and you can also ice the water and cool your back on those hot summer runs... I am using the High sierra soaker. The inov8 looks good as well... just make sure to tight those shoulder stripes

I run ultras and during my long training runs have used both the Camelback Mule and a Nathan Outdoor backpack (2l, can't remember the model but it's much more comfortable than the Camelback. Much lighter too).  Both take some getting used to but after a few runs you forget they're there and just run.  I've also used the Cambelback 1.5l fanny pack style. It bounced around too and you have to get used to having it on you.

BIG TIP - once you put in the water, turn it upside down and suck out the air bubble before you put the bladder into the pack.  It eliminates most of the sloshing noises.
