Tri shorts with side pockets. Particularly Zoot shorts. They have pockets big enough to hold my phone and i.d. on one side and my mp3 and a key on the other.

Otherwise try the fuelbelt.

Sports bras are a wonderful place to keep gear. I have keys on a carabeener and clip that onto my strap and tuck the keys in my bra under my armpit. My road ID is on a lanyard, also tucked into my sports bra. And lastly, a credit card, or ID card tucks nicely in the front in the gap space there.

I don't often run with music, but when I do, I have a clip on my MP3 player that I snap onto my shorts. Just make sure you tie off your shorts drawstring so the weight doesn't pull them down over the miles!

For races, I just have a car key and tie it into the drawstring on my shorts in the little pocket inside.

I've got a thin lightweight waist bag- kind of one of those travel hidden ones but with slightly bulkier pockets.

I put my keys and a bit of money in a zip up flat pocket and inhaler and ipod in the flap-front pockets. I work "out bush" where there are few street lights, so ive attatched a head lamp to the waist belt too. As long as its tight-ish I dont tend to notice it.

I used to tie my key to my shoe laces, and I had an arm band for my Ipod, which was one of the bulky ones. I just got a new tiny mp3 player for running only, so thats much easier to carry.

How much stuff do you need to carry?

The ipod should clip onto your waistband. I have an armband for it but never bothered to use it.

Every pair of running shorts I've ever owned have at least one little pocket inside the front that will hold one key, one id card and cash.

I highly recommend the iPOD shuffle. Mine is probably only a little bigger than a quarter and I clip it onto my sports bra when I run. Also I believe it's only about $80 although I haven't looked in a while.

Good running shorts usually have a pocket inside the front, that's where I keep my key and I'm sure cash could fit in there, although I've never tried. An ID may be hard to fit in there, but I never carry one. I got one of those ID tags where you can fill out your name, emergency contact, allergies, medications, and blood type and clip it onto your shoe. I actually think it's better than carrying an ID because it gives more information and you don't have to worry about finding a place to put it.

Hope that helps!

I like the waste bag, too. It's sometimes called a "fanny pack" and can be found in sporting goods stores under camping accessories. These are great little packs that snap right around your waist, are adjustable, and just big enough to hold wallet, cel phone, and other tiny incidentals like a tube of neosporin and band-aides.

The problem with pockets is that things can fall out. Same for sports bras because as you move, the material gives a little. I found that, when I didn't have the fanny pack, the other best place to tuck things is in your sock, but it can't hold much, isn't so comfortable, and things are likely to work their way up out of it once you get moving for long distance.

I've found that if you run with a ipod shuffle, you can run into any sporting goods store and grab those thin little nike armbands that Basketball players use for sweat (or maybe just to make their biceps look more like david robinsin's did back in the day) and the shuffle clips right on. I run my earphone wire under my shirt from the neck down my left arm so it's totally out of the way. This is way cheaper than buying an expensive bulky armband from apple and if you can find the right heaphones, you can set the length and tape the wire so that there no free slack to bug you under you shirt. Just tuck the excess wire under the armband too.

When it's hot out I usually put my keychain on a lanyard and put it around my neck then stuff it in my shirt. In the winter though, I found running gloves the Nike makes that have small pockets on the palms for keys, money, etc. which are really useful.

As far as music goes I agree with basically what everyone else said with regards to either ipod shuffles or armbands for your current mp3 player. If you're really looking for convenience though, I found a pair of earphones at the Apple store that have a port to plug an ipod shuffle directly into it.

I have an adidas arm wallet. Its big enough to put phone, credit card/cash, keys, lip balm in. You can tighten the contents so that it does not jump about in side and its an elastic adjustable strap to fit all sizes of arms. I think it was about £6/£10 in most large sports shops. Also shoe wallets are good. I've used it on every run i've done since buying it. It doesn't rub or itch, and its easy to loosen just a tad if you did it up to tight whilst running!

I have an iPod nano in an armband, and if my husband's asleep/downstairs/elsewhere then I take my housekey off the ring and slide it in my sock (and no, I can't feel it while I run). I should probably have ID on me when I run. I'll have to look into that shoe wallet.

Never really thought about having ID on me when I run until I read this thread.

I run almost every morning but it's a local route and I'm not getting far - about 3-5 miles in a loop.

I've got a sports belt-pack that is like a fanny-pack. Big enough to hold a cell, wallet, my Zen Stone, keys, and even a digital camera if I'm feeling froggy and wanna video my race.

That's quite a bit of extra weight to haul around though. If I was competing and expected to actually win something, I'd put my key on the drawstring and run without music (some races don't allow mp3 players anyway.

I need to get an ID card though with emergency contacts on it, Name and home phone. No allergies yet, other than one to mowing the lawn. :-)

For runs 6 miles or less all I take is a HRM, Nano in armband and Road ID. For longer runs I use a Camelbak Hydrflow and love it. There is and extra pocket for phone, money Emergency TP, food and what ever else I might need. What I like most about the Hydraflow sre the tension straps that pull easily when you drink the bladder down so it does not get loose.

Note about the Rad ID. I have had it for a couple of years and the info plate is starting to rust so if Jam922 ever has to come get me I hope he has his glasses.

Peace

I carry my iPod in my right hand. I tried carrying it in my left but it doesn't feel right. The iPod doubles up as stopwatch for sprints. For longer runs, I have to carry water, so I ditch the iPod. I find that I have to wear gloves when carrying a water bottle in my hand otherwise I get blisters.

I use a diaper pin to pin my car key inside the waist band of my shorts. I keep my phone in one of 3 locations depending on what I'm wearing...inside pocket of my running shorts; the lower back pocket of my exercise top or in my sports bra (I wear 2 bras so it's between the two bras). If I have enough pockets I'll carry my Zune in one of them. I do have an arm band that I can use, but I don't really like it so I don't use it very much.

It never occurred to me to have id on me when I run but that is a great idea. I'll have to give it some thought. I do have an emergency contact programmed in my phone, and I ALWAYS have my phone with me.
