I'm doing the ragnar relay (www.ragnarrelay.com) and have never done anything like this. My legs are no longer than 6 miles and I am running at least that (usually longer) at least once a week.

Has anyone done these before? Any hints/tips/advice? What kit would you recommend?

    All help greatly appreciated!

    Cheers

like I said in the training thread, these types of events are super fun. The trick is making sure you don't run too fast on your first few legs and making sure that you stretch for a couple minutes after your legs.

Depending on how much time you have between the legs (which should be a fair amount) you need to make sure you take in some kind of carbs. I learned this the hard way. Last year I did a four man, 100 mile relay. I didn't take in any carbs and on my last leg (eight miles or so) I bonked hardcore. I'm not sure I've ever ran slower than that pace at any other point my running career.

As for a kit, I'd recommend a few pairs of running shorts and tops, two pairs of shoes, a few pairs of socks, a towel, body glide (or vaseline), flash lights/head lamps/blinking lights, safety vests, and food/water. I imagine the race manual will provide some other suggestions as well.

Have fun with it, make some new friends and you should be okay.

Cheers Kdogg - that's awesome, thanks for the help. I will make sure I have all that stuff with me. If there is anything else you suddenly think of let me know : ) This isn't going to be cheap!

For carbs, other than loads of fruit would you suggest stuff like granola or energy bars? What about protein shakes would that be an idea?

whatever works for you really. In my last one I started taking in potato chips because thats all we had.

granola bars are good, energy bars are good, fruit is really good, but don't be afraid to eat "not healthy" stuff if it works for you. Gummi bears are pretty good too
