Hello Everyone, I'm relatively new to biking. I bought my first road bike (Giant OCR-3) last summer. Generally, I ride to commute, but I'm interested in possibly training for a duathlon. However, unlike running races, where there appears to be an overall feeling of do it to finish, not to win, I get the impression that duathlons and bike races are more competitive. Is this true? Do people complete duathlons just to finish, and not to race? Would it be difficult for someone who isn't in it to race to do it? Is it worth while? Thanks for the advice! Calantha

    Quick comment,

Where as with triathlons and duathlons I find it's the same.  People of all walks of life come out, whether to finish or compete.  The mood is pretty positive and everyone is welcoming and friendly.

On the flip side,  road races are for competition.  If you are wondering whether you can finish... you probably wont' have too much fun.  Also with road races and Criteriums bike handling skills are a must.  If you don't possess them, than it could be dangerous for you and others.  However there are strictly "charity rides" or century rides that are open to all.  Some people like to think it's a race but there are plenty of casual rider... heck some are on mtn bikes.

I say get some experience with group rides and try and join a local club.  You have a good bike and now all you have to do is learn how to make it go fast!

    Good Luck!
