Help!: How to add notes to map

Is there a way to add notes to the visable map course? 

For instance, I might want to display a distance or instructions at a particular point on the map at a street crossing, etc.  I can add text to a 'point' on the map by clicking the point and adding the text.  However, this does not show up on the visable map.
