I am planning on going on about a 40 mile ride in the next couple months.  It will be my first organized ride.  There are going to be hills on this ride and I have not rode any hills in 20 years besides overpasses.  There are no hills where I live other than these small overpasses over the interstate.  It would be about 50 miles to go to where there are some hills to ride which makes time and gas money a factor.  What would be my best option  to prepare for these hills only having flat ground to prepare on.  Thanks in advance

Ride into the wind in a bigger gear than normal. Start out with short bursts, maybe a minute maybe less. (I don't know what you fitness level is) Work your way up to a longer more intense ride. How about one of the training parachutes that the 100m sprinters use? I am just going for some ideas as I have no problem finding hills up here in my part of the Great White North
