Why can't I see google's hybrid view which includes satellite photos. It would be very helpful to actually see the trails I use.

I have just spent the last half hour trying to find the answer to the same issue.  Unless your trail follows a "mapped" road you cant accurately map your run to check distances and profile.  The tutorials show the Google interface with the aerial imagery option buttons but I cant see them on the actual interface.

Solution seems to be when you go to create a new route select the old mapping tool rather than the new - this gives the satellite/hybrid options which I cant find in the new mapping tool!!!!

It is in one of the irritating blue boxes that obscures a large portion of the map view - top right - in the new mapping tool - default is street view in a dropdown pick list.  It is amazing how conditioned one can become to a user interface - I really did not expect to find it there.
