I think the iphone app imapmyrun is great! however one major drawback is that my iphone runs out of battery on my long runs, so after 2hours 50mins, the phone died... i was hoping to use it when I run my marathon, but it will be taking longer than that! the other minor issue I found is that in settings when I select voice feedback at 5km intervals, I get it at 2.5km intervals... any help would be appreciated :)

My bike commute to work is often in the dark, and starting this time of year in the cold. I have a piecemeal assortment of base-layers, shells, reflective items, and lights that I use. Much of the gear that I use is not really cycling gear but instead is gear from my backpacking days. I am always looking for inexpensive ways to get warmer or more visible on those dark cold mornings (10-30 degrees fahrenheit).

Does anyone have any tips where to get inexpensive bright lights, cheap reflective material, or items to keep warm that work well on a bike? Your suggestions need not be items that were specifically designed for biking but items that work well for you.

For example, my headlights are 2 Duracell Daylite flashlights (80 lumens each) that I bought at the hardware store. They were way cheaper than a comparable light made specifically for a bike.

Any ideas?

Does this happen to anyone else?

After a hard ride (mountain biking or road riding) I get a headache, it usually starts about 4 hours or so after the end of the ride. I drink:

16 oz glass of orange juice in the morning (1 hour prior to the ride) with 2 servings of oatmeal

8-10 oz of water or Gatoraid just prior to the ride

80-100 oz of either water or a sport drink mix during the ride along with energy gels/bars

immediately after the ride, the remaining of the water or Gatoraid (about 8-10 oz)

then eat within 1 hour of the ride.

I feel that I am drinking enough since my urine is clear and I have to go quite frequently afterwards.

To try to stop the headaches, I have to take some Excedrin as soon as I start to feel the headache coming on. I have recently tried glucose tablets during the ride, but not enough rides with them to detremine if that helps it or not.

Any ideas on what this could be, too much hydration, not enough hydration, not enough salts, enzymes, etc...?

I have been running consistently for 8 months and just completed my
first 10km race. I have registered for a half marathon in 6 months time
and then a full 4 months after. I have been building my running base
and currently average 40km (24 mi) a week with my long runs at 14km -
18km (8.5 mi - 11 mi). My plan was to use a 17 week training plan to
prepare for the race. So the question is should I:

a. Use a half marathon training plan and work on speed during the shorter runs to prepare for the half marathon race?

or

b. Train for the half using a full marathon plan ensuring a proper taper before the race?

The first option would seem to increase my speed versus my endurance where as the other would work on endurance. Any thoughts.

Whilst Google maps suffices for anything on-road it does not show footpaths or tracks. As soon as you venture offroad (heavens forbid!) you are stuffed - unless you can pick up your path from the satellite images.

The UK is blessed with a fantastic map making agency - namely the Ordnance Survey (OS) and I'm sure other countries have equivalent agencies. When can we expect to be able chart our progress as accurately off-road as well as on-road?

When i view my route on imapmyride, hows about an option to switch to satellite view on google map, as well as just plain map view. Sometimes when i'm out on my bike and i'm doing a route i've mapped beforehand, i use this view to check where i should be going (if its a nw ride). Most of the time im cross crounty so the google "map" view is pretty useless, where as "satellite" view would be really helpful. As i could see the trail.

Just a thought for future updates.

My wife and I have decided to get a bit more serious about running and are looking for some people to help us stay motivated. We are very much beginners (almost embarassingly so).

Over the past two years we go through 4-5 month stretches where we run ~3 times a week, and then go through 3-4 month stretches where we do nothing. We would like to keep it a bit more consistent this time as we head into another cycle to try and keep in shape.

If any other beginners (or anyone) out there would like to like to join a group to help keep up the encouragement send me a message. Enjoy

I know that this suggestion has been posted at least once before, but bears repeating. Being able to import HRM files is great, but many Polar models can't provide data in that format.

Training session data can, however, be easily exported in XML format from a user's personal training diary @ www.polarpersonaltrainer.com. The XML schema is specified at http://www.polarpersonaltrainer.com/schemas/ped-1.0.xsd. Below is a sample file showing one training session. The amount and type of data will vary depending on the device that recorded it. This is from a CS200, with pretty basic workout data. The data is always in metric, with distance in meters, weight in kg, height in cm, speeds in km/hr.

It would be great if the ability to import these data files could be included in MMR.

Hello WHS Runners!

Wow, a lot of you are really committed to putting in the
miles now that the season has ended. Way to go!

To keep things rolling (or running) over the winter, I just
wanted to offer that if anyone needed a ride to a weekend race or group run but
didn’t have transportation, please feel free to contact me. I know Mr. Dumschott,
Mr. Woermer, and Mrs. Therrien said they were willing to help out with rides as
well. I haven’t talked to other parents, but I bet more would pitch in if asked.
So, if you want to run with the group and just can’t get from there to here,
don’t be shy – speak up and something could probably be worked out (but make
sure it is okay with your parents first).

On another note, like you, I’d like to get into racing shape
by springtime. Most of you probably have your own routine/plan and should stick
to it. I don’t have a routine, so I pieced together the schedule below from
various sources. I probably won’t strictly stick to it week in and week out,
but in general it seems like a good guideline to follow. What do you think?

Mon: Core work,
little or no miles

Tue: Regular miles

Wed: Hilliest/Meanest/Nastiest/Toughest
route I can find, work the hills

Thu: Core work, little
or no miles

Fri: Easy Miles

Sat: Race Day/Interval
Day (or Easy Miles)

Sun: Easy Miles (or
Race Day/Interval Day)

Average 30 to 40 miles per week, 3-10 miles on running days

Emphasis on endurance and strength Dec – Jan (long
intervals)

Focus a little more on speed end of Feb - March (shorter
interval work)

I have yet to average over 30 miles per week, so it’s
definitely taking it up a notch for me.

Hope to see you on the roads.
