A major lesson learned today - even if a path is marked on a map, it may not exist! Bus out to Gorebridge, then eastwards up the hill to around 860 feet, wit splendid views towards the Moorfoots, Pentlands, and north to the city and Fife. Southwards through peaceful farmland to Newlandrig - fortunately a cooling breeze as the temperature rose. To Vogrie Park for lunch, then back to Newlandrig, and south up a minor road towards Crichton Castle. A splendid view of the castle over the valley - down a steep road, across the river, then up the east side to Crichton Village, then to the Castle. Here. we discovered that the marked path to Borthwick Castle didn't exist, so retraced our steps back to the village, down the hill, up again, and to Wright's Houses, then donw the slope towards Borthwick Castle, where, once again, the marked path along the Gore Water didn't exist, nor was the disused railway line walkable. So, up the hill to Wright's Houses, and return to Gorebridge.
