Bike Ride Description
This route takes in parts of the Old and New Towns of Edinburgh. It was designed as (relatively) short introduction to historic and scenic parts of this capital city.
Inevitable the trip involves streets with traffic, but includes a surprising number where private cars are banned - or at least can't move freely due to road closures.
The route involves a trip down The Mound. (NOTE - on Sundays the cycle lanes are parked on!). There are a couple of places with (short) steep hills where some people will want to push. There are also sections of cobbles in the New Town.
There are many other interesting places just off the route and therefore infinite scope for detours and dalliances.
As a circular route obviously it can be started anywhere. The marked starting point on Castle Terrace is where the Farmers' Market is held on Saturdays, so if you arrange to meet people, there is plenty to see while you're waiting.
ROUTE -
Up Johnston Terrace 'beneath' the Castle. Down Lawnmarket (Royal Mile), left down The Mound, left into Princes Street. Right into Frederick Street (pedestrian crossing), left into George Street and around Charlotte Square (this is probably the worst bit for 'traffic conflict').
Down Glenfinlas Street and on to the grand Moray Place, then Darnaway Street and Heriot Row passing Robert Louis Stevenson's childhood home.
At Dundas Street a short detour will take you to the Glass and Thompson cafe/deli. Dundas Street is also full of commercial art galleries, including the Open Eye Gallery at the beginning of Abercromby Place where the journey continues to Dublin (steep) street.
Over the cycle crossing and perhaps visit the imposing red stone building - Portrait Gallery (great cafe, 7 days). Or straight on through St. Andrew's Square, briefly onto Princes Street, over Waverley Station (another logical starting point) and left into Market Street.
Here there are two galleries - Fruitmarket and City Arts Centre - (with cafes). Right into Jeffrey Street and left onto the Canongate section of the Royal Mile (or right to the Museum of Childhood and/or The Scottish Storytelling Centre). Downhill to Holyrood (Palace and Parliament).
Circle the later and reach regenerating Holyrood Road with wildly contrasting architecture. After a short section of the Cowgate (once a much more notorious part of Edinburgh), short sharp hill to Infirmary Street then cross South Bridge, up Chambers Street (University, 'The Museum' and Sheriff Court).
Left, right, down Candlemaker Row, through The Grassmarket - Pubs, cafes, small shops, occasional outdoor craft market. Walk up Victoria Street, lots of unusual shops.
Route finishes along the dismal King's Stables Road (though there is an entrance to the delightful Princes Street Gardens) and along the least used cycle path in Edinburgh back to the beginning.
Repeat.
