Description of this Bike Ride

Streamlined recumbent Bicycles have achieved speeds of over 80 mph on this course. An annual event called the World Human Powered Speed Challenge is held on this road in September each year. Dozens of aerodynamic bicycles have gone over 60 mph on this road which within the rules is still considered flat. The road must slope less than 2/3rds of one percent over its length, which this road does. NDOT has recently repaving the road (completed Sept 2009) at a cost of $4 million. The town of Battle Mountain is to the north. The course starts about 21 miles outside of town and runs north for a distance of 6.5 miles. The racers have the first 5.5 miles to build up speed. After this (not shown) is approximately a one-mile shut down area where the riders brake and coast to a stop, They are then caught and helped out of their vehicles
