Hilly, mostly road (small lanes) but with a 1 1/2 mile stretch on ash paths. Lots of history incl remains of medieval castle (Heighley) and reclaimed industrial land (coal mining) that is quickly reverting to woodland. Some hills are sharp but not very big - adds to the variety! Downhill/flat for the last 1 1/2 miles. Start in the centre of Madeley by the butchers.
