Run Description
One of the best Melbourne runs to date. [NOTE the map best shows features/landmarks in HYBRID view, 3 notches down from highest resolution] Started from west-end of Melbourne CBD head east along Bourke St, turning right and southbound on King St. Cross over to east side of Rd at King/Flinders intersection. Cross over Yarra River to pick up the Yarra Trail. Continue along river path passing Queensbridge Square abd Southbank. Cross beneath Princes Bridge, past the Rowing Boatsheds. Continue up as far as Swan Street and take left heading back over the Yarra River on western footpath of Swan St Bridge. Continue over pedestrian crossing and take footpath along Swan Street past Melbourne Park. Lexus Centre (Collingwood FC should be on your right). Continie past the multisports/velodrome (formerly 'Vodafone Arena') and then veer left into the open space. Head up stairs to take the footbridge across to MCG. Once off footbridge veer right following the upper concourse. You should be heading anti-clockwise around the perimeter of the Mighty 'G. Wave to Ron Barassi statue on your right. Take the footpath heading diagonally right away from the stadium, towards intersection of Weliington Parade/Jolimont Terrace. Cross over to Fitroy Gardens at pedestrian crossing (traffic lights). Continue into Fitzroy Gardens taking central path, should pass you by the old Conservatory on your left hand side. A great time of year for the Gardens - first clear day in Spring. Continue through Fitzroy Gardens crossing over Lansdowne Street at the ped crossing over into Treasury Gardens. Another fantastic Melbourne feature. Continue along the path heading towards CBD skyline. State Government buildings should be immediately on your right-hand side. Exit Treasury Gardens turning right (northbound) along Spring Street. Pass the Old Treasury Building on your right hand side crossing over Macarthur Place. Continue past the Gordon Reserve (wave to statue of Lindsay Gordon - the celebrated young playwright - a tragic tale there). Take a left at Pedestrian lights to cross over Spring Street and continue down Lt Collins Street (westbound). On your left pass by the high brick walls and secret garden of the exclusive Melbourne Club. Continue a long way on Lt Collins St, crossing Exhibition, Russell, Swanston (mind the lunchtime shoppers), Elizabeth, Queen Streets. Cross-over and turn right into William Street and then left at Bourke Street for the final leg home; a nice downhill stretch over last two blocks. What a great run, has it all in scenery/variety!
