Description
Stage 6 of Green Belt Relay - 8.4 miles from Chipperfield to St Albans. The stage starts across The Street from the Two Brewers Pub in Kings Lane. The route follows Kings Lane for 300m and as road turns right, bear left into cul du sac with houses on right. At end go over stile (next to metal gate) and straight across large field. After 0.45 miles the path passes some isolated trees. Immediately after the last tree turn half left on path to metal gate in distance. On reaching gate exit field and turn right onto narrow path above and on RHS of road. Follow path to it eventually merges with road. Go straight on along road and over trunk road (A41T). Immediately over road, turn right and thru' kissing gate onto lane downhill. At bottom turn left onto narrow path. Follow path straight to residential road. Go straight on and across road onto path between houses. Path comes out next to Rose & Crown pub (2.1 miles into route). Go straight across road (High Street - take extreme care) and into Church Lane (past church on your RHS). Follow road as it turns first left and then right (becomes Water Lane). Soon cross over canal. Immediately after crossing over canal, turn very sharp left and down to canal. At canal turn right and along towpath past lock. After 250m towpath passes under metal bridge. Immediately after bridge, turn right onto path along edge of park. When Path meets road, turn left and cross over asap. After a few yards take narrow signed footpath on right. Follow path up and under railway then uphill with a field to the right (be careful of nettles and barb wire). Path comes out at narrow road. Turn left, and at the bottom (next to red post box) turn right into lane (Harthall Lane). Follow lane for 0.8 miles, then turn right over stile in hedgrow onto signed path thru' field (Note: this is the second of two paths on the right accessed by a stile in the hedgerow. On my last visit the first path had the sign removed from the pole and was very overgrown. The second and correct path goes straight across the field and away from the road at an angle of 90 degrees). In centre of field path veers left and towards some houses away in the distance. Follow path across fields, eventually through lane between small field and houses. Path comes out onto road (at Bedmond). Cross straight over past tim church and into Sergehill Lane. After 250m, at Y-junction, go straight on into St Albans Lane. This becomes Bedmond Lane and after a mile passes under the M1 motorway. After another 500m go straight on at crossroads at Potters Crouch. On reaching Holy Bush pub stay left at Y-junction (Potterscrouch Lane) and eventually under M10 motorway. After another 600m and as lane starts to turn left, take footpath on right thru' field towards houses. On reaching residential road, turn right and follow road (Mayne Avenue)thru' housing estate, soon Mayne Ave turns left, then right then left again - just keep following it. On reaching T-junction, at top, turn right along Westfields for 70m. Then turn left onto footpath between houses (be careful not to miss this). Follow this path straight, crossing over a few roads and past playing field. Path eventually leads to pelican crossing at main road. Cross straight over and atraight on onto path downhill into Verulamium Park. Path goes past Roman Wall. to right. After 500m, with lake on left and just before river, turn right on path and straight on to the finish, next to the entrance to Westminster Lodge Leisure Centre car park.
