Description
Stage 3 of the Green Belt Relay. Boveney Old Church to Little Marlow. The route is very scenic and flat. It follows the Thames Path for just over 10 miles. Then thu'a nature reserve to finish in the beautiful village of Little Marlow. Soon after the start we pass Dorney Lake, then Oakley and Bray on the opposite side and over Maidenhead Bridge. Shortly before Maidenhead Bridge the route passes under Brunel's old railway bridge. 150m after passing under the railway bridge, follow the Thames Path left, through a gate and along the river past Maidenhead Boat Club. The path leads under Maidenhead Road Bridge and then turns right and away from the river for a very short distance to a road. Turn right towards the bridge, and then right again to cross Maidenhead Bridge, staying on the RHS. Immediately over the river, turn half right on a path through a small park and cross. At the opposite side of the park cross over road (Ray Mead Road)Please take care as a house blocks your view of the traffic. After crossing turn right along the pavement (now on LHS of road) for about half a mile. Cross over to rejoin the towpath when it reappears on the RHS of road. Follow past Boulters Lock and then stay right on towpath as it goes away from road. Now running on path along Cliveden Reach. When you are left with no option as path runs out, just turn left to follow a path away from the Thames thru' some woods. Stay with path for about half a mile (at one point straight over a track). Path eventually leads to and stops at a lane. Turn left along the lane to Cookham. At end of lane and T-junction with main road turn right (take care a house blocks the traffic). Continue along main road thru' the village for 450 yards to just past the Tarry Stone. Turn next left into an old cul du sac and then first right thru' a gate and straight on along a footpath thru' the church yard, keeping the church on your RHS. Exit church yard and straight on along path to the river. At the river turn left to follow towpath for almost half a mile to a railway bridge over the river. On reaching the railway bridge, go under it and then climb up the steps to cross over on the footbridge. On the other side climb back down and go left along a narrow path and straight on where it opens out, with the Thames on the LHS. Go straight between some new buildings and the river. This leads to a track between houses and their gardens. Keep straight with gardens and river on LHS for almost half a mile to where track comes to open area with Ice-Cream Van. Turn right thru' gate to cross train line (level crossing - take extreme care) and straight on along lane past picnic area and Spade Oak Pub. Just past pub and opposite Old Thatch (Enid Blyton's House) turn left onto path straight across field to lake. Turn right on path around lake and after 450 yards turn right onto path thru' trees. Eventually over footbridge. Turn left along edge of fields. At road cross straight over and stay with path soon elevated thru' swampy area. Path crosses footbridge and soon turns right. Follow path to a lane. At lane turn right to village and straight on to finish. For a descriptive map see the "stage details" section of the relay website www.greenbeltrelay.org.uk
