- San Jose is weird. The best places to run to avoid traffic are downtown and through the airport.

Notes: starting south of the airport you'll want to stay on the west side of the river. At the last surface-level road you hit before the Bayshore Freeway cross to the east side. The freeway underpass is not complete, but it's passable if you take the middle section. Might not want to do it at night. There's a bridge over the river at the top of the route that doesn't show up in the aerial photos yet, and the trail on the west side leads to a park that's also not shown, with a water fountain. Coming back, after crossing under the Freeway you'll cross under the street that you'll want to take back to the west side of the river. As you continue south of the airport you'll cross over to the east side again at Coleman (the underpass on the west side is not passable... well, you can get through it if you're careful but there's no trail on the other side... instead take the trail up to Coleman, go left on the sidewalk over the river, turn left to the underpass on the east side).

If you want to extend the run go all the way to the end of this section of the trail at Park Ave. instead of going right at Santa Clara. And if you want to go ever farther at this point take Park in towards the Plaza de Cesar Chavez and kick around the streets downtown for a while. Or if you're really crazy you could extend the northern part of the run all the way along the river trail to the Alviso Marina. There's nothing special about how I routed this run on the streets, except for crossing the Nimitz Freeway on Park, because Park has an overpass but no onramps.
