- A tough 7.5 miler (it seems longer), but it has a good profile for a hard run. The first 3/4 mile or so is a flat warmup on asphalt that heads through town past the state Capitol (take Court St if you want to avoid most of the roads/sidewalks downtown). After the R onto Bailey and the L onto Terrace, the next couple of miles take you up a "gradual" uphill (420 ft gain--check the elevation feature for the gruesome details) where the asphalt gives way to hardpacked dirt after a mile or two. The next R onto Portal takes you on a very rural road that rolls (eventually) downhill and, after a R onto Buldoc, connects back up with 12. The Elm St/12 section can have some traffic, but the shoulder is wide enough and the flat stretch can be a welcome change that is perfect for hammering. An easy pace/walk through the "Meadows" neighborhood makes for a good, albeit short, cooldown in a mellow residential area with little traffic. All and all--good scenery, firm footing with a about half the mileage on dirt (you can even run the dirt shoulder up a section of Terrace if you want to avoid asphalt even more), tough climbing, and a fast finish to stretch legs tightened by climbing/descending make this loop worth the effort.
