Portland, ME: Eastern Promenade Trail to Back Cove Trail and back
Really easy ride along Portlands Eastern Promenade Trail, out around the Back Cove and back. Mostly asphalt. We started near the Visitors Information Center at 14 Ocean Gateway Pier, parked our car on Thames Street just past Hancock St as close to the trailhead of the Eastern Promenade Trail as possible. We had a two hour space and on Sundays they tend to be lax, but be wary, nonetheless. Ride along the trail fronting this beautiful stretch of coastline heading toward Fort Allen Park while enjoying the view of the many islands of Casco Bay. Continue along the trail toward Tukeys Bridge where Interstate 295 crosses the Back Cove inlet. When you get to the bridge, follow the trail to the right and cross under the bridge. As you come around the other side of the bridge, keep an eye out for the down ramp on the right to the Back Cove Trail and follow it along the coast of the cove. Ride through Back Cove Park and continue along a bit more and if you are on a road bike, get off the packed gravel trail and on to Baxter Blvd. Follow Baxter Blvd around the Back Cove enjoying the scenic view of the cove and along this beautiful tree-lined estuary. There may be a porta-potty near the end of Edward Payson Park if you feel the need. Then continue on along Baxter Blvd looking for an entry point back onto the Back Cove Trail. Get on the trail and head up toward the bridge, riding across the bridge while keeping an eye out for the down ramp on the far side of the bridge that takes you back underneath to the Eastern Promenade Trail. Retrace your ride back towards where you parked. We decided to ride on past to Commercial Street for a nice, cool draft beer and a tasty burger at RiRa Irish Pub at 72 Commercial Street.
