Hi everyone!

I've noticed recently in the past 2-3 weeks or so that when I finish running and cooling down I sneeze a lot for some time after the run. This will range from a time period of 30 minutes after the run to 6+ hours after I run. I'm not sick, nor do I feel sick, and I don't have any allergies. The weather hasn't cooled down too much (today was a balmy 55 degrees and I still had a sneeze attack for some 45 minutes after the run), so I'm not sure why this is happening. Has anyone else experienced this problem or has any ideas for why this might be happening? This has never happened to me before so I'm not quite sure what to do about it!

Thanks!

Ellen

If you are like me and have suffered with plantar fasciitis (PF) and found that it never heals no matter how long you stay off of it, then I have something for you to try. I have suffered for years and tried strasberg socks and others treatments, including Scholls inserts, but I couldn't get past it. I met a physical therapist that told me to visit an Orthotist and get custom inserts made. I visited one and he told me to try Birkenstock inserts for around $65 before paying a $400 fee for custom made ones. I tried them and from that moment, I have not had any more PF pain. I wear them in my work shoes and in my running shoes. For my work shoes I use the Birkenstock blues which are half inserts that are all cork. I use Birkenstock sports in my running shoes. They are two piece with a half length cork insert under a full length insole. Now I just have to redevelop my running ability after almost a 10 year struggle. Hope this helps other sufferers.

Does that mean I have a calorie intake budget of 3,200 - 3,400 for that one day? Or should I stay within the modest weight loss limit even on days when I ride long and hard?

I tend to drink a lot of water during the day, so im well hydrated, but i do sweat a lot when i jog. I dont carry a water bottle with me because i find it annoying. Is it necessary for me to have something to drink when i run? I always make sure i drink frequently when I come back. ( i usually get in 3-4L of water daily)

I have been training for my second marathon, which is in a little over 2 weeks and have never had any knee pain before. However, two weeks ago, I was traveling and had to do my 18 mile run in a different area with very hilly roads. I have been doing small hills normally, but these hills were much larger and throughout the run. I felt fine then, and for the next week.

However, nn my long run last week (12 miles) I began to notice knee pain at mile 10. I did one run during the week and after 2 miles my knee was hurting again.

The pain is right above my patella, where my quads attach and I am pretty sure it is tendinitis. I have been icing it and taking anti-inflammatories, but am unsure as to how to continue my training for the marathon.

I am supposed to run 14 miles tomorrow and 8 next weekend ,as my last long run, before the marathon the following week. I am not going to do the 14 mile run tomorrow because I tried to run 2 miles today on the treadmill, with a knee brace on, and it still hurt (not has painful though).

My question is.....do I rest it for a week? or even 2? should i still run the marathon? I am going to make a Dr. appt next week, but would love to hear other runner's opinions.

Thanks so much for your help!

Calories burned hauling trailer

This week, I started hauling a trailer for the first time and I can't find any way to calculate calories burned. When I added the trips to my training log, it offered the standard entries but none included trailers whereas if you add a hike for example, the dropdowns offer a number of choices based on the size pack you're carrying. It would make sense, I suppose, that one's calories burned would differ if you're hauling 80 lbs in a trailer. Believe me, if my perceived effort was any indication, I burned a lot!

Any ideas?

Hi

I'm a beginner runner and I've been running for about 3 months and I have gone through my fair share of aches and pains, intitally, it turned out I was wearing the wrong shoes for my feet which fixed a lot of the knee and hip problems I was expereincing. Appparently I have really high arches and didn't know.

Last week I went for a mid length run (about 3 1/2 miles) and the next day I had a lot of pain in the upper part of my foot along the non arch side. Not directly below my ankle but more far forward.

The pain has continued and got a little better but when I ran again yesterday it was really sore.

I've been trying to research this online but can't find anything that describes it correctly. There is no swelling or redness, just pain especially when I point my toes or walk downstairs.

The closest decriptions I can find are for bone spurs, stress fractures, or peroneal tendonitis but they don't match.

Just wondered if anyone here had any insight? I'm going to try and get an appointment with the Drs since it's been painful for a week or so.

Thanks in advance!

Hi all

I started trying to run some time ago and a friend suggested a book to set me on the right track. The title is "Body Mind and Sport" by John Douillard. Has anybody read it? The guy recommends a training regime that seems to be based on a VERY gradual increase of one's aerobic capacity. He strongly recommends that the runner shouldn't breath through the mouth at all. Instead, he says, the runner should backpedal, go back to significantly lower training intensities (50-60% of HRmax) in order to become able to sustain prolonged exercise at that intensity and then work his way up from there very gradually. He maintains that one can climb up to his previous performance level but this time with breathing rates as slow as 14-20 breaths per minute and heart rates around 130-140!!!

I've been doing capoeira (a brazilian martial art) for a few years now and I want to start running a bit to increase my aerobic capacity but this guy's suggestions seem kind of radical to me.

has anyone tried this stuff?

I typically run anywhere from 3 to 5 miles 4 to 6 times a week. While I run I make it a point to stop in a few places and do push-ups. I make sure to do at least 200 push ups before finishing. The last 50 typically take place at my house while I finish up with a post-run stretch. I'm trying to come up with some new ideas on what else I can do to build muscle mass and aid in weight loss. I have been told by trainers that weight lifting helps burn more fat than running, so to lose as much as possible, and as quickly as possible, I try and do both.

So, what is there to do without any equipment other than push ups and sit ups? Sit ups I dont really bother with as you wont be able to see my abs unless I drop at 20 lbs anyhow.

Hi there,

I've been running now for over 18 months and in this
time I have managed to stay pretty injury free (well apart from
blisters!), however I've managed to get a pain in my foot that is best
described as a painful tenderness!

I've been gearing up my
running for the Nottingham Half Marathon this coming weekend, however
back in early August I got a tenderness/pain in my left foot, near my
metatarsal bones nearer the outer 2 and 3rd toe. I then started getting
pain up the back of the calf on the same foot.I wore a scholl ball of
footpad that felt nice but after the run the tenderness/pain returned
and the calf pain also stayed (as expected).

It got to a point where I thought I should rest it a little, so
for the last three weeks I have done no running at all. I tried a 3.75
mile steady run today, same trainers and took it nice and slow. The
foot felt great and the run was nice, however after the run this
tenderness came back but no calf pain! Good news for the calf at least!

looking at the underside of the foot there is no bruising and I
cannot feel it tender by touching it, but when I stand on tip toes I
feel it inside the foot.

I am going to be going to see a doctor but I'm sure the first
piece of advice will be rest, has anyone had this before? it is really
bugging me now I just want to know what I should be doing whilst the
wheels of NHS healthcare start to turn....besides just resting! :-(

Nick.

I usually run in the late afternoon. However, a week ago I decided to start running early in the morning before I go to work (work starts at 8:00 am) because I needed to spend more time with my teenage daughter after work.

I found getting up at 5:00 am too difficult, I ended up getting up at 6:00 am and procrastinated whether I should go or not... In the end, I didn't go and I used excuses like the weather (it is still cold and wet here in New Zealand, although spring is apparently here). Good news is, I still went for my run in the afternoon, as usual.

Please share your tips on how to get started early in the morning.

Hey folks, I am just seeking out info / advice / reassurance from your

bursitis?

On 31 July I fell while trail running, I hit the ground pretty hard
(it was a hard pack / gravel logging road), took a big chunk out of my
right elbow and my right knee. My knee was bleeding a bit, I had to
pick myself up and run another 1k to the river to wash the wound. I
then tried to run back, managing another mile or so before it was too
painful and I walked. The pain felt more like it was from the
superficial wound than the impact. Later that day, (after R.I.C.E - ing
my knee and dressing the wounds) my knee seized up. It was constantly
stiff and sore but really bad after I had been sat down for any length
of time. It may have been slightly swollen but nothing major.

The next day it was still sore but a lot better, I could walk on it okay.

On the 4th August it felt much better so I went for a fairly long
trail run again, about 7 miles in total with some super steep climbs
and descents (which I would walk / scramble or at the least take slow).
I also ran up a couple of flights of stairs along the trail. My knee
felt absolutely fine, I don't remember any twinges at all.

On the 5th I did another, easier, trail run. It was about 5-6miles with
less vertical (a couple of hills but nothing insane). Again my knee
felt fine.

On the 7th I ran again, a similar route to the 5th but a bit shorter
and a little bit faster (just under 5 miles). This time on my way home,
on a downhill I think, I became 'aware' of my knee, which seemed a
little tender but nothing to cause alarm. I just remember thinking 'oh,
maybe I did bang my knee, oh well, getting better now'.

From 5th to 8th I was also biking to work, but that's just a short 15/20 min ride with a couple of uphills and a long descent.

On the 9th I went for my long slow run, set off to do 10 miles. I
was wearing new shoes (Nike Zoom Vomero 4 - I'm neutral / supinator and
they are super soft and cushy so I am almost certain they have nothing
to do with it). The moment I started I could feel a strong twinge in my
right knee on every step, which would ease off quickly, then start
again whenever I stopped to cross a street, then ease off. But after 2
miles it no longer wore off and the discomfort got worse. I stopped
running and walked home. I haven't run since then, but when walking the
dog on the trails the pain flares up every now and then.

The pain is behind my knee cap, occasionally above and to the inside
of the patella, but usually behind. It ranges from a sharp 'nerve'
pain, to the feeling of pressure or swelling. It hurts when I put my
weight on that knee, when I bend the knee to an acute angle, or when I
twist my knee. But not EVERY time, and sometimes it hurts at other
random moments when I am not doing any of the above. It does not hurt
at all when I ride my back to work.

If anyone can identify with this, or offer any advice I would be
much appreciated. I was supposed to start a marathon training program
next week so would be grateful for all the help I can get.

Thanks guys

I'm working on Hal Higdon's Spring training Novice (basically, 12 weeks going from 9 mi/week to 16 mi/week). I've been running 3mi, 3-4 times per week for a while with no problems. Recently, my right knee has developed a "pop" when I extend it from a bent position to a straighter position. It feels like a tendon slipping over a bone or something. Occasionally it's a little painful, but usually it just feels strange.

I took a week off running to give it a rest and it didn't change much - I have noticed that it does not bother me when I run, and after a run I find that it doesn't happen as much. It seems to happen when my joint/muscles aren't being used (i.e., in bed, at work).

Any thoughts on what this might be and how to address it? I'm anxious not to cause any serious injury, but I'd really like to push ahead with my training.

Thanks!

I need some help. I'm a 21 year old female 5'6 and about 104lbs. I went to get a physical from my Dr on Tuesday for cross country. My Dr is contimplating not allowing me to run because she thinks my weight is to low. I am comfortable at my weight but I'm willing to gain some weight because I dont want the trainers at my school to not clear me to run. Being a distance runner I dont want to go through a major weight gain. Right now I consume about 2700-2800 calories but I am afraid this might make me ballon. I eat pretty healthy, stay away from fast food, soda and so on but is 2700-2800 calories to much?
