I'm thinking of signing up for my first half-marathon and I have a training plan that will take me from my current level to being able to run it. The plan lasts 16 weeks but I am going on holiday during weeks 10-12. I have thought about whether I would be able to stick to my plan whilst I'm away but I know that it will be too hot for me to run outdoors and I will only be able to get in the gym two or three times over the two and half week period....

So I was wondering if anyone could offer some advice as to whether I can ammend my training or whether I should choose a half-marathon when I know I can stick to all the training?

Thanks for your help in advance - I'm sure there's an easy answer but I'm relatively new to running so please forgive my ignorance :-)

Easy answer is yes you should be able to run your first half marathon with the vacation time in the middle of your training program.  While on vacation try to get some running or cross training in.  Get some time in at the gym, go on some long walks or hikes, swim for 30 minutes, etc.  Take your running gear with you and try some short, 30 minutes or so, runs while on vacation.  Even if it's really hot you should be able to do some short runs.  Best of luck and enjoy your vacation.

Thanks for your advice! I didn't think about the walking/hiking that I will do. I'm going to be doing some voluntary work whist I'm away so that's why my time will be limited - sounds like I could still do which is great news! Thanks again!

I am relatively new to running as well, but just completed my first 1/2 marathon in St. Louis, Mo. on Sunday!! It was an awesome experience!!! I completed in 2 hours, 3 min. and 2 secs. Rained the entire time, but I loved it!!! Good Luck to you!

Hi. I just ran a 5k charity run last weekend and I picked up a brochure for a half-marathon. I am an active runner but the race is in about 4 weeks from last Sunday. I have a training schedule and have been exceeding it, should i be okay to do this? and I am really nervous. I just want to do this to say that I have completed it and feel good about it; does everybody try really hard?!?!? I have only been running for a little over a year...should I be alright??!?!
