    Hi everyone,

For the past few months I have been running in my neighborhood before work, usually between 6-7am, which has been AWESOME.  The only problem is that it's getting darker and I'm having trouble seeing, I have actually tripped a couple of times on the sidewalks.  I can't go any later and I don't want to give up my morning runs - any advice for what to do in this situation so that I can see/ cars can see me?

     Thanks!

I've been wondering the same thing. I'm living in Penang, Malaysia at the moment and I go out at 5:30 to 6:00am mainly because it gets too hot after 7:30. My problem isn't so much that I can't see because there are enough street lights where I run. But I would like to be more visable to traffic. I was thinking of a strobe type light you see on bicycles. I think they can be switched to a steady beam. There are head lamps using LED that are fairly light. I've used them for trail running or hiking. Will be interested in others comments.

Hi!  I run at 4am.  It is always dark.  There's lots of things out there for you.  I just picked up a bright yellow reflector belt (amphipod) that  has a pocked in the middle of your chest to hold a cell phone or GU or car keys.  I use a Petzel Tikka headlamp (I just wear it over my hat in the summer and my ski cap in the winter).  I also have a tiny flashing red light I stick on the back of the headlamp headband so cars can see me from behind.  There are also reflective jackets and shirts that some of my friends wear.  I have 2 reflective wrist bands which are a bit of overkill but it never hurts.  We sort of look like running Christmas trees but hey, anything to avoid getting hit by a sleepy driver.

Night visions goggles should do the trick.

Just don't take any chances, stick to running on the pavement (sidewalk), but watch out for fat idiots reversing their car out of driveways en route to MacDonalds', because we all know the car has right of way, regardless of whether it's on the road or not.

Be seen, be safe, avoid road running in the dark ; there are a loat of half-witted miopic nutters out there - regardless of what country you live in.
