Starting again after a long, long layoff...motivated by my daughter who just started running in September of 07 and completed her 1st half-marathon (Thunder Road in Charlotte NC. Dec. the 8th.) Our goal is the Marine Corps Marathon in Oct. of 2008. This is the first forum I've been on so bear with me as I begin the effort once again.
Tyler park with my friend Kris.. pounded it today when it was supposed to be a recovery after yesterday's long run and before tomorrow's tempo run...
9.25.. 6:41/ mile
At times it became aerobic threshold/anaerobic so it was a good run! good runs all!
I raced today on a two lap course - it was at least a minute long
I took the lead early into the ~20 mph wind, got drafted hardcore. Then gave up the lead after the turnaround. I made a move to regain the lead and then tried to surge in order to drop the dudes who were up there. Nothing doing. In the end I got stuck taking the wind on the 2nd lap and then was used and abused by the eventual winner in the last 1000m.
Can I get credit for yesterday?
Yesterday's run was, for me, a long one- 12 miles around a loop on the south edge of our community. It was a great day for a run, 28 degrees or so and sunny the whole way. Little wind as well, which was good as it really decreases my enjoyment of being out there. The run itself was slow (spotty training over the last month, despite my good intentions to step up my mileage). While I don't need a gps to run, I'm looking forward to the addition of a Garmin 205 to fuel my efforts, especially when it's cold and dark. Thank goodness we're heading back towards the sunny side of life.
So tommorrows's a new year, and I'll get down to business, training for the Colorado Marathon in May. I'll post here- maybe it'll keep me honest. Since losing my training partner to plantar fasciitus, going outside for runs has been difficult.
I'll let you all know how tomorrow's run goes. Off into the land of 35+ mile weeks, I hope.
Cheers-
Changingground
Happy New Year!!
This was my first run in a few months, so I took it really easy--just 30 minutes on my treadmill that reads about 1 mph too slow. It said 2.25 miles, but was probably closer to 2.75. I'd much rather run outside, but running in a snowstorm after dark isn't exactly safe. I hope to get out soon.
Cheers!
14 miles on the trails today. I've been pounding the roads like no other lately, so I wanted to give my legs a break. I was planning on going pretty easy, but it turns out I was cruising today. I saw my time (~1:32:00) when I finished and was pretty surprised. I didn't feel like running the extra 6:00 to call my run 7:00 pace, so I just logged it as is, hence one of my few non 7:00 pace runs. (if any of you check out my log)
Wind chill of 1-2 degrees, it was freezing balls out there.
104 miles for the past 7 days and feeling strong, can't wait to race hard later in the spring
I've been a wimp the past 2 days.. yesterday I didn't run because when I had planned to go do it - I helped my Dad with errands..
Today was the first day back to school, and like an idiot I decided to
take a nap when I got home - and didn't anticipate this bitter wind chill/laziness
I still want to hit 60 this week.. but I'm at an 18 mile deficit
12, + 10, 4 + 10 tomorrow, + 4, 10 on Friday, + 9 on Saturday..
that's like 55-60.. I guess I can't let it get to me that much
ugh nevermind.. bigger deficit.. I missed out my 4 this morning..
that's a 22 mile deficit.. Damn. 9 Saturday will make it 13.. and I'll have to
increase Friday's second run by 3.. that's 10..
Tomorrow morning I'll go out for 4 easy in the morning.. that's a 6 mile deficit
54 this week, 65 next week.. I'll have to deal with the hurt. Damn.
Moral of the story: When you're re-building a base, don't skip out on runs if you can help it!
If I'd have read your comment an hour ago, I might have gone out! I did my 1.5 miles on the treadmill rather than brave the 5 degree evening and (still) snow covered streets.
It would have been my coldest run ever. I did several last year in the 10 - 15 degree range, but the roads were clear. Got to love Michigan weather and Michigan roads!
I will make it out yet this week. I can't stay on the treadmill for too long.
Tonight was my first attempt at very unorganized fartleks. I ran a 2 mile warm up, at an approximate heart rate of 136bpm, then kicked it up to 172 for about two miles, then cooled down to 146, then back up to 172 for a few minutes, then cooled down to 156, then back up to 168, and so forth. So I covered 6.8 miles in 56:33, or about an 8:20 pace? Ugh.
I feel like I'm back at the beginning, went every gain came as a result of lots of very hard work. Oh well. I guess I can't expect too much when first getting (more) serious. Tomorrow night is a rest night, then 6 easy on Friday. I'm looking forward to receiving my 205 so that I can get a better sense of what the splits turn out to be. I'm not even sure what my projected heart rate should be, or what range I should be in for intereval work, so I better get started doing some research.
OK, checking in at the Running for Fitness site, based on my age, my max heart rate should be something like 174-176bpm. Long slow runs should be at 67-77%, so btwn 136-148, and 80-90% of a week's runs. Lactate, or anaerobic threshold runs should be btwn 82 and 88% of max.HR (and only 10%/week), or 152-160 for me, and VO2max runs hsould be at 95% and up, no more than 4-8% of the week's efforts.
So tonight's run had periods (short) at higher than I should have been pushing for lactate threshold runs (in the 95% plus range) and most of the rest of non- warmup miles were in the lactate threshold zone. I guess that's it for speed for the week for me. I'm going to have to get a better understanding of the HRM worked out, so that I kow what the averages for these efforts are.
A beautiful day to run!!!
Clear blue skies, bright sun, slight west wind, and 14 degrees. Most of the streets were plowed so I got in my favorite 5K route. 3.2 miles in 29:16...almost 9 minute pace. That's pretty good for me.
I'll take it easy tomorrow.
A nasty day to run!!!
Ugly gray skies, no sun, 15 mph wind, heavy rain and 35 degrees. Got my 11 mile MLR in anyways, ran the last 3 miles at 7:30 pace, felt pretty darn good. Get a day off tomorrow. short run on saturday then a 16 miler on sunday. GO STEELERS!!!
got some work on the bike today.
should have spent longer.. but my butt was hurting.. bad
Nothing beats running I can say that with confidence. 1 month til race day,
10k.. variations in the schedule can be ill afforded
I thought I'd join in this thread and share the "ups/downs" regarding my training. I'm 46 and started running back in November 2005 (lost 40 lbs). I started with 1 mile and got up to 5-6 miles (~8:50 p/m pace) by June. I tried to do everything right (shoes, etc.) but probably increased too fast.
Anyway, I laid off for 9 months or so and gained 20 lbs back, but started training again in July 2007. I ran my first 1/2 Marathon the weekend before Thanksgiving (2:13:00). Unfortunately, I've been off and on since then, but I'm trying to get started back on Hal Higdon's training course and shoot for my first Marathon sometime in late spring/early summer.
I've got to fight my tendency to increase my mileages too quickly (sore shins/knees) so maybe sticking with Hal's schedule might help. I ran a good 8 miler on Wed (1/2) @ 9:55 p/m pace and ran a "sore" 3.1 mi today (Fri) @ 9:10 p/m pace.
Good Luck to all on this thread and keep on "Running"!
Gary
Hey Hey! I am excited to be apart of this forum and this website. I've been running for a while but just recently started running with more of a purpose. I'm working up to a half-marathon on July 5 in St. Louis. My Dad, who is 61, ran a half last year and is doing another one this summer. He is a great inspiration!
So in Northern Illinois it is really cold so I've been running 3-4 miles on my treadmil, but today it was 35 so I decided to layer up and get outside and pound the pavement. Today was my 3 mile day and it was nice to be outside but the wind was awful. My route north was wonderful with the wind at my back; I was crusing at a great pace. However the trip back south was horrible with a 20 mph wind at my face. I could hardly lift my head to see where I was going. I had to stop and walk halfway back which was disconserting, but I got it done.
Tomorrow is a new day. 5 miles in the morning. It's supposed to be warmer and foggy and if it is windy, I'm going south first against the wind so that I can cruise on the way back.
Cheers!
Dave
welcome gary and dave!
keep up the good work kdogg!
I got 50 minutes in on the bike today, it was good because it was intense
and my heart rate got up there.. but damn.. those seats really hurt my
butt(or lack thereof)!
Welcome Gary and Dave,
Dave, I live in Mid Michigan, on the Saginaw Bay, so I can relate to the cold. It's just something you gotta do. I've found a pair of tights with a top layer of lined windpants, along with a tech fabric long sleeve shirt, a light fleece vest, and a light windbreaker is plenty. I start off cold, but wind up taking off the windbreaker, even in the low teens... and start off running into the wind, makes a huge difference.
I did three miles outside today. It was a slow three (probably close to 35 minutes). I ran with my wife, who has not ran three miles straight in years (not an exaggeration), plus, I'm still fighting this chest congestion (any suggestions would be great). Despite the horrible cold, I still managed to get 12.26 total miles this week . Bumping up the miles again on Monday, when it's supposed to be a little warm!!
I got out this morning in a slight drizzle. 4.2 miles in 44:09. Slow and steady as I'm getting myself going again.
I'd like to get myself down to 9:00 miles for my 25K in May. I averaged 9:40/mile last year, but the first half was right around 9:00. I really need to run more negative splits this year.
As far as clothing is concerned, I splurged for UnderArmor top and bottom last year and I love it. I keep pretty warm down into the teens with just that and a windbreaker (I wore a light raincoat this morning and roasted).
My biggest problem is that my hands are the last part of me to warm up. If I wear thick gloves, they end up soaking wet. If I wear thin gloves, my fingers are usually numb for the first several miles. Any suggestions?
12 today in 1:20:35
4 yesterday, shake out.. 26:20 (don't ask why I didn't take it easier)
Good Morning gang!
Congrats to all of you that continue to go out on cold days. I live in the Dallas area and it's been prettymild for themost part. I got alot of cold weather running gear for xmas and it's been great. North Face gloves have been awesome for the 25-40 degree days (thin, yet warm) and the tights have made all the difference. (Kudos to my wonderful wife and kids for the gifts!).
I've rested the last 2 days and officially start my marathon training schedule today. Start with a quick 3 miles (70 degrees and muggy). I'll post a time after the run.
Have a good run today !
Gary
Ugh-
I ran a really disappointing 5 on Friday night- it was supposed to be , but cramped badly in my right calf and walked the remaining two home. Still painful, a little, today, but may try an easy run this evening. This is the second time I've had this cramp problem (happened a month and a half ago, same leg) and it really messes up the schedule. I missed Saturday's long run, and Sunday's "gettign the week started right" run.
Anyone know of any "anti-cramp" magic?
changingground
Only advice I have is good stretching and potassium. Also, maybe try changing your stride length for a minute or two (helps when my muscles get tight) I haven't really had a problem with cramping yet (knock on wood), at least not DURING runs. I always seem to get calf cramps AFTER I run.
As far as my training today, 6 mile long run, 1:08:20 (11:20 pace), in 50 degree weather, thick fog, steady but light east wind. At about the 3.5-4 mile mark, my quads tightened up. Strided out a little, fixed the problem. At about the 4.5- 5 mile mark, a heavy COLD rain started coming down. Finished the run fine, even had enough steam left in me to kick out the last quarter mile or so. Good stretch, cool shower, and a nice meal (tuna and spinach salad) afterwards, and I feel pretty dang good.
Hey, Im jen :).. kindof new to the forums.
anyways
today i ran an easy 8k. It was wierdly warm outside, 13 degrees celsius.
Dan- both times this has happened I only had a hot beverage (coffee one night, tea the other) before going out, with lunch a long time before. I thought I'd been proactive enough about hydration with drinking at the midpoint of the run (and the hot drink), but maybe I'm going into the run dehydrated. In any case I'll take tonight's run slow, and eat and drink beforehand.
Jen- welcome aboard. Where are you located?
whew!- Update as promised:
Week 1/Day1 of new Marathon Training Program:
3 mls at easy 8:59 p/m pace (76 degrees and muggy--very odd for January here in DFW).
Welcom Jen!
Good luck <changingground> update us!
yesterday I did an hour and a half on the fluid trainer (thing that you hook up to your road bike to make it stay in place)
Today I ran a mile and then did an hour on the fluid trainer
My leg is feeling pretty good, but theres no sense in rushing back because its a long long season and being healthy at the end is more important than running a couple miles now
I got my racing spikes today - New Balance LDS1005Y
Womens spikes, yes. But they look freaking sweet and fit my feet pretty well, so what the hey
Hey all! Interesting thread, thought I'd join in. Seems like a nice mix of faster folks and middle-of-the-packers like myself, which is nice. I used to be a competitive runner, but after overtraining and becoming ill, stopped running altogether in the late '80's. 80 pounds later, I'm trying to get back into it. I've done the start/stop thing before, trying to get back into running, but like runningdad, I tend to get ahead of myself and add too much too soon. This time I've got an actual trainer and a program to follow, and it's been amazing.
I started running again in late October, and the first few times I ran, I forced myself through 30 minutes at 13:00/mile. I hated every minute of it, and limped around like an old man for two days after. :-) Now, though, I've lost 18 pounds, and on January 1 ran Seattle's "Resolution Run", where I ran a 27:24 for 5k...the fastest time I've had for that distance in 15 years! Progress is slow but rewarding.
I guess this has been more of a cathartic post than a training post, but I'll stick to topic by saying yesterday I ran 6 miles at 11:45 pace, and aside from sore feet - the dogs still don't like the extra weight - feel fresh and ready to go again today. Tonight is an easy 2 miler at 11:45 pace, then I rest until Wednesday. I'll be on the treadmill because I left my cold gear at home (and I'm not running there at night - I'm in the boonies and need some light!). Beginning in August, I'll be officialy training for the Las Vegas half marathon, so I'm trying to get a good base built up by then. Woot!
Ray
I ran 2 miles really easy (10:10 pace) yesterday and I just finished 30 minutes of speedwork on the treadmill for today. I wish I could have made it outside this afternoon, but we've got thunderstorms in Michigan in January?!?
Hope it clears enough for a good 3-4 miles tomorrow.
All this talk of temperatures - I have to keep reminding myself you are talking Fahrenheit. After running in the Melbourne (Australia) Marathon last October - my first one - I have started my preparation for this year. Unfortunately my preparation hasnt involved running, that starts tonight.
In 25C temperatures, very little wind and blue skies I will hopefully pump out 10km in about 50 minutes, although it might stretch to 55. Have a 14 km charity run in March that I am getting some cricket buddies involved in after doing it last year.
Will let you know how it went.
Yesterday's run was a total bust- too early after Friday's difficuties, I guess, as my calf balled up within a half mile of home. Too bad- it was snowing, and seemed a beautiful night to be out. I'll take another day off and try again on Wednesday.
I did receive the Garmin 205 I ordered after Christmas yesterday, and having charged it last night will check out the features today. While it is absolutely a non-necessary toy, I'm hoping it'll help me do more structured training this winter and spring for my upcoming events.
Glad to see that we're getting some consistent interest from folks. It's always nice to feel like your a part of something bigger, especially when it comes to training. I was reflecting on how much easier it was to train last summer and fall, before I lost my training partner to plantar fascitis. So I'm glad you're all here.
I did 7 miles this morning. I'm in DC and took full advantage of the 'warmth' by wearing shorts and tshirt (about 50*). Funny considering last week I had to wear 2 pairs of gloves on one of my run! Today went pretty well, I was a little sore from my cross-training yesterday (which included abs and legs, something new I'm trying). I did today's 7 miles in 53:50, so I was happy.
I also did 16 miles this past weekend and that went pretty well. It took 2:06, which is great! But I had to stop 3 times and just catch my breath. I felt sluggish through the first half of it but finally got a rhythm going around mile 10. I'm looking forward to this weekend's long run and hope I'm a little fresher for it.
I'm training for the Austin Marathon on Feb 17, which will be my 2nd full.
HI All,
New to this thread but love the idea of it.
Getting back into training after taking most of December off... which is too bad because I was just starting to ramp up some distance and time, but life takes its turns.
Ran 4 mile outside yesterday and today about 1-1.5 minutes slower than I was doing in November (but even then I wasn't blazing fast by any means). Taking tomorrow off because Wednesday is a leg day in the gym then plan on doing another 4 miles on Thursday.
Not really training for anything at this point but a coworker is talking about doing a half marathon in March and maybe I'll do that with him. It'd be my first.
Grant-
Definitely consider seriously the half. Of course I don't know what specific race you're thinking about, but generally speaking, I think it's a great distance- I was fairly intimidated by the half I ran (when signing up for it), but ended up doing just fine, and had a really good time.
Good evening daily posters,
Today (Dallas) started off warm and muggy and ended up cold and windy.
Week 1-Day 2: easy 3 miles as scheduled with an easy pace of 8:57 p/m.
Kinda sore from over doing it lately, but ok for now.
<changingground> I got my Garmin 205 in July and have not ran without it. for me, it is a critical part of keeping me on track.. Good Luck!
