Had a slow day out today.  was supposed to run a 530AM 5 mile run(NYRR 50th Anniv.), but it was thunderstorming,  so i stayed in bed,  and got up at normal time and ran my 5 mile.

Lex, I'm glad to see you are feeling better!  : )

I am re-focused!  I did my 12 on Sunday.  I felt pretty good, but I left WAY too late and ended up getting really hot.  I had to go to a barbeque almost immediately after I took my shower.  Ended up throwing up in front of my friend's mom (whom I have never met before!).  It was embarrassing, but I felt much better.  I have a really weak stomach and the smell of all that yummy food did me in after the run.  After keeping watermelon down, I CHOWED down and it tasted so good.....LoL!

Yesterday I did a fast (for me) 3 mile run.  I did two consecutive 7 minute miles, which I was REALLY proud of  : )  The first half mile and last half mile I did at pace (9s).  I feel focused and ready to go!

Took my day off yesterday, and ran 5.2 miles today in 42:13 or 8:08 per mile. Getting close to that under 8 per mile...so looking good for the 8k race in July to get under 40 minutes. Didn't really feel like running this morning, but of course after I was finished, I felt better.

    Keep running!!

15 mile medium long run this afternoon. I ran about 7 miles on my and then met up with one of my teammates and ran with him for awhile and then both of us met up with some other guys and finished up.

I was only planning on going 14, but I got pulled along for another mile because of the conversation.  A good day

just 40 min these last few days and today, usually kept it around 7min pace. I have a newfound respect for you guys who work fulltime and still find the time to run. After a few 50 hour weeks of a job where im on my feet all day i'm starting to dread these next few months.

    Good morning everyone

Ran my standard 5.2 miles today. Slowed a little from yesterday...8:19 pace. It was a beautiful morning to run...the sun was just coming over the horizon as I took off.

Chiggy...I'm jealous of those that have the time to run 14-15 miles during the week (but I guess Kdogg finishes that in an hour Undecided). It's tough enough getting a 45 minute run in before I head to work...and it's sometimes real tough to get my long runs in on the weekends, as I work 2 weekends a month.

Yea i usually run in the evening i just cant get up early, although i might have to change that since its starting to get over 100 fairly regularly. In these next few weeks when my mileage gets up my life will consist of work and running with a little sleep in between. I would cut back on one or the other but i need the money and im not exactly running for recreation.

Another 40 min today, 7min pace as usual

14-15 miles in an hour? please, try 45 minutes :) Seriously though, I just wake up pretty early or run later in the evening to get my runs in. I live at home so I don't have a lot of expenses, so I can afford to only work 30 hours a week or so. I promised myself that this year was going to be all about getting myself into shape, because the previous seven years all I had heard about was how much potential I'd wasted up to that point...so I figured I'd try and see what I could do with some consistent training rather than running only during the summer and fall.

We'll see how the experiment turns out sometime next year when I do a marathon (I decided to put the marathon off until after I run a really fast 10k)

Today I ran 10 miles at the hottest point of the day, I am trying to run in the heat at least once a week to help get acclimated to it. I wouldn't recommend trying it unless you have a lot of places to stop for water

Got in two runs this week Monday and yesterday. Both short  - 2.8 miles and realativley slow 9.3 - 10 min/mile pace. My knee has been feeling "loose" and I've been afraid to do much. On the other hand, sitting around on my tush doesn't help either. My brain recognizes that it's been 31 years since high school, but my body still beats me about the head and shoulders over that. Well hips and knees anyway. Got to try and start building the miles back up and get in some rides as well.

As Tuesday I did speed work and Sunday will be my long run, today I decided to embrace the hills! Ouch! Hill work outs are hard! I live about half way up a rather crazy hill so I decided to make the most of it, it's about a half a mile from the bottom to my house with about 300ft gain in that distance. After a warm up and 2 miles tempo loop I did the hill like fartleks (please someone correct me if my terminology is wrong - these are my first few baby steps into the world of proper running). So I sprinted up hill for the width of one block, than ran easy/jogged the length of the block for recovery and then sprinted up the next section - and so on, zig zagging my way up the hill. Sheesh... I then did another 2 mile loop back - the intention was that a mile of that would be at tempo but frankly after the hill, just an easy run was enough of a challenge and slowed to a jog as I had stitch and was generally half dead! So I think from now on, hill work outs stay as hill work outs alone! I bit off a bit more than I could chew tonight! I was hoping one of you experienced runners could tell me if my hill approach makes sense or if I am doing completely the wrong thing. Tomorrow is kickboxing and maybe a bike ride again, then long and easy on Sunday. Happy weekend, everybody!

I felt tired this morning and could not make it to the gym. Tomorrow, Saturday, I have to go to school and will be unable to run in the NY Mini 10K that I had paid for in May. But definately on Sunday my goal is 14 miles.

I went over to a 5k today. I held the course record and they did some stuff to help get participation up, so I figured I'd have to go over there to defend my course record.

I ran 16:13 to win. I felt like junk the whole way, my legs are definitely fatigued from the mileage I've been putting in. But I went out there to do what I had to do and things went about as I expected. So, no complaints here. I might try and run fast at some race in a couple weeks, but we'll wait until then to see.

12k tonight - tried a new route for a change. Oh man does my understanding of the elevation map need to improve?! I didn't think it would be such a climb. I ended up half way up the side of grouse mountain!! Plus it was a really twisty road, so I kept thinking I was nearly at the top, then the road would twist and reveal even more climb. All in all over the course of about 1/2 mile there's about 230m gain in elevation. The 2 miles or so before that were a very gradual climb too so by the time I got to the steep section I was already fatigued. I found it a real struggle, I kept having to stop for a bit and walk. I guess I'll just keep on trying, maybe do run/walk intervals an increase them gradually.

: ) Hope you all had a great weekend!

BTW where are marathonbroado and exkiwi?!

8 miles today in 1 hour 20 minutes...right at 10 minutes per mile. I'm happy I finished, but not happy that I had to walk around 2 miles of the course. I'm not sure if it's the heat and humidity, dehydration, or lack of energy. Or maybe some of all 3. I may try an energy bar next long run.

I am with you LexB. Come back Marathonbroado and exkiwi. I must keep an eye out for my kiwi friend when I am running.

Today was a pretty easy session. 12km in a touch over 55mins. I am thinking of going as fast as I can for the hald next week. I will probably just jump in with the 1.30 pace group and hold on for as long as I can. If I ca maintain that pace for 16-18km then I will still get a respectable time, but it is more about the prep for the full in Oct, rather than time. Would be cool to get around 1.32 though.

Ride home today was my first sub 40 ride, and it would have been quicker but for every stinking red light on the way. Had nothing to do with gale at my back for 80% of the ride!!!

    Catch ya later guys

Running club tonight - had a 'booty work out' session - we did sprints, tempo runs, fartleks and hill runs, focusing on form (and of course using your ass and legs properely!).

It was a good session, got cained on the tempo runs by the real speedy folks but held a good pace still. I'm very happy with my performance compared to the rest of the group. I just need to up my game and catch up with the speedy guys and proper runners. Alas I didn't have a watch and couldn't time myself so I don't know my pace, but I was probably averaging about 9.5 min/mile maybe a bit quicker. We did about 5k all together.

today was a quick run of 3 miles, after back/biceps workout. Finished in just under 7 minutes per mile. It was only 70, but the humidity was 90%...felt like trying to breathe underwater.

I think I could use some work on my running form. I feel like I use all calf to run (my calves are the only part of my leg that feels tired when I finish). Is there something I should be doing different?

haha chiggy, funny you would say that actually. Saturday I caused a super bad blister on my foot and just ignored so and kept running. Between Saturday and Monday, apparently I infected the blister and it hurt a ton. So when I was running I was changing my gait, which in turn caused some other issues. On my Monday evening run, my foot hurt so bad (because of how I was running), I thought I possibly had a stress fracture (but failed to consider a number of reasons why a stress fracture on my first metatarsal is near impossible). So I woke up and ran Tuesday with no foot pain, just blister pain. But I had to miss my evening run on Tuesday because that bad boy hurt sooooo much.

Anyway, I doused it in antibiotic and went to sleep early and woke up and the pain had subsided. So I ran 15 miles today for my medium long run and felt surprisingly awesome.

I've gotta go into work later to speak with some beginner triathletes about training, and then after that I am gonna try and run some more after that.

Goal tonight was 6-8 x 1km splits at approx 4-4.15 pace. I had done 4 at 3.56, 3.58, 4.03 and 4.05 when my pre existing issue with my bowels kicked in. Legs felt good, as did my engine, but it was a risky proposition running with that pain!!! The ride home was quick and easy. I should be right for a long run on Sunday before a 70km ride on Sunday.

    Have a good weekend guys

I've taken some days off due to the heat wave.  It hit 100 degrees out here and was SO humid...I just couldn't bring myself to run!  Yesterday was a little better (high 80s and humid is better, by the way), so I did a fast 3mile and called it a day.  I'm excited about consistently making 7minute miles, even in that heat.

    I need help...

I have a week and a half until my half marathon...any hints on what I should be doing until then?  I am going to run today, something in the high 80s high humity.  I'm really hoping that the weather is better for the race!  I was wondering though, as the internet seems conflicting, should I add a long run now?  Or do I "take it easy" until the race?  Remember that I am a new runner...I have only been at this for 3 months and average only about 20-25 miles a week.  I'm starting to feel like I may have signed up for this race prematurely and am getting really nervous.  That's why I was thinking if I add at least a 9 or 10 in this week, it would help?  My race is a week from Sunday.  I seem to have trouble keeping my pace low.  I tried to run my mile loop at a slow/ half-marathon pace and ended up running an 8 anyway.  I can't keep that up for 13 miles!  Any hints on how to keep the pace down on a long run?  I also have a really weak stomach and throw up sometimes immediately after my long runs (after vomiting I'm feeling fine).  I really don't want to throw up at the race, though.  I am really nervous, people!

Another long/medium run?  How do I make sure I keep my pace slower?  How do I not throw up?  LoL!  What did I get myself into?  LoL!  I'm SOOOOO nervous!!!!!  Help me!!!!

Hey everyone, Sounds like you are all doing swell. KDogg, I, too, am jealous of your mileage, especially since my slump started a few weeks ago. Good news is, my last two runs have felt GREAT! I did 5 miles on Monday in 43:08 (8:34 pace) and 3.76 mile easy run on Tuesday in about 35 minutes. I've also been able to get out on bike patrol at work a few times in the last two weeks for some cross training (beats sitting in a patrol car all night). This has been a huge help in my recovery, too. I'm much less sore (except for my @$$) after riding.

I received a blessing in disguise  duringmy Tuesday run, I lost my watch (it had been strapped to my Amphipod and fell off somewhere). I turned around to look for it, but no luck, so I'm not sure how long it actually took me to finish my run. Anyway, I went to the store to buy a new watch and found a Timex Speed/Distance watch for $59! That's $90 cheaper than I've seen it before. I was hoping to hold out for a Garmin 405, but I couldn't beat the price. I'll use this for a while, then think about upgrading.

Long run later today, Trying for between 8-12 miles, depending on how I'm feeling. By the way, I decided to run the Charlevoix half on 06/28, so wish me luck. Maybe a short term goal will help me stay on task with my training schedule. Keep running.

    burg,

Personally, I'd probably not do a run more than 8 miles 1 week prior to your half marathon. Then a few 3 to 4 mile runs, then take 2 or 3 days off prior to the race. Wish I could help on the "slow down your pace" issue. I usually go by my breathing...when I'm at a pace I can run long distance, I have a certain feel to my breathing...nice and easy (8:15-8:30 per mile)...I've done that pace for 20 miles. When I up my pace and breathe hard, I can do 7 minute miles, but not for long...3 miles.

Simmo - I reckon I would be about 42-43 for 10km, but it is a distance I very rarely run, jsut because the loops around my house dont quite fit in with that distance, and I very rarely run races. Have only done 14km, a half and a full.

Burg - where is your half enxt week. Seems we have one on the same day,a lthough our attitude towards them is a bit different. Mine is a step towards the full in Oct so am just going to see how far I can go at a fast clip - 1.30 is my outrageous aim at the moment. I was where you were last year - about 4 months running, had done a 14km race, was building up slowly, and my goal was the half - the full was not yet a consideration. I would just look after yourself. AN easy run this week at about half distance, a slightly shorter during the week, and a short run the day before to blow out the gunk in the legs. Eat properly and you will be fine. But then again I am no expert.

Took a short trip down to Florida - mouseland - for a conference this week. Got in a couple of three mile runs on Monday and Wednesday. No problems with knee or shins so I'll try another tomorrow AM.

Burgalurg - I would guess that part of the problem you seem to be having in keeping your pace down is nerves. When you get nervous/anxious your body starts pumping out adrenaline - the old fight or flight reaction that kept our ancestors alive. Then you start running and your body says "looks like we're gonna run, lets book!" Next thing you know, you are off to a pace you can't sustain. Try working on relaxing, but realize that you WILL be nervous when you start your race. If it is close enough to where you live, try to drive or ride the course. See where the first mile marker is and determine the time you want to go through that first mile in. You should plan to be slightly slower than your goal pace for the first 2-3 miles, then pick up the pace and finish ahead of your goal pace. If it is really hot, adjust your pace slower. Don't worry about yaking in front of other runners. As long as you don't throw up on them, they won't care. It could be worse. I've been running on and off since high school 30+ years ago. I still get teh trots before any race of consequence that I run. I'll eat the same breakfast as I do on any other day, but the adrenaline tells my gut to dump the excess baggage. Just gotta make sure I know where the portapotties are. Good luck!

11 miles total. I ran an all comers track meet today. The mile actually turned out to be pretty competitive, there were a lot of fast guys out.

I ran a 4:35 (72, 68, 69, 66) for 2nd. It was one of those things where you finish and feel great and are thinking man, what would have happened if I pushed?!? But I am happy with how that turned out because I haven't done anything even remotely fast (I've ran like 8 miles under 6:00 pace in the last month-month and a half). We went out too slow for me to use my strength (from running so many miles) and I paid for it with a second place showing. But thats okay.

Then I got together with some guys for a 4x800 relay. We ran 8:41 with me being the anchor. Luckily we were so far ahead by the time I got it, so I was able to take it pretty easy (2:15-2:20 or so).

Then 9.5 miles worth of warming up, cooling down and messing around.

We did 10 miles with 6 intervals of .5 miles at about 3 minute pace. It's been a while since we did intervals so it was nice to know I can still move at that pace for a while. Before we started I thought it was going to be hard since it's been a while but it turned out not so bad. I could have gone faster but figured it would be dumb pushing it too hard 1 week out from Bighorn. Tonight will just be 3 mile recovery run and 1 mile swim before we head out for a week of acclimating. I can't wait.

    Hello guys!

had an easy 10k yesterday with 1 mile at pace (only 8.20pace but better than nothing I guess) and one mile at tempo at the end 9.0 pace. I felt pretty tired at the end. All in all it was a 58min run.

I'm a little bit concerned about how much I have slowed down over the past month.  Any ideas what's happening? I am thinking I'll probably go back to having one treadmill session each week to work on my speed.

    I hate treadmills tho! :(

Today is cross day so kicboxing this morning (had to do my Kata infront of the class which wasn't good) and going for a bike ride this avo. My shoulder is still pretty sore, def going to get it checked out next week.

Easy long run tomorrow - not sure whether I will try to conquer that beast of a hill again.  We shall see

    Take it easy guys
