I checked out the recommended training schedule for my relay run... I'm going to have to train hard (and yet smart) for the next couple of weeks and it's going to take serious planning and discipline to fit everything in. I know I have to start doing multiple runs to prepare for 3 runs in 24 hours and hills... lots of hills.
so went out this morning (couldn't make twice one day as I have kickboxing tonight too, so thought if I went this morning after last night that might help). 3.64 miles at 9'27'' (34 mins ish) I started off with the intention of an easy run and pushed it up to a tempo run after a mile or so.
It's a lovely day and the trails were beautiful. The only thing that brought me down at the end where the freakin' drivers who decided to pull out as I started on the cross walk and then got narky with me. IT"S A CROSSWALK, YOU MAY HAVE A NICE BIG ENGINE BUT I HAVE RIGHT OF WAY, SO SHOVE IT!
Sorry I had to get that off my chest! : )
five miles in the morning. I'll double back tonight. Then take tomorrow easy and then double on Friday. I'm racing a mile on Friday morning, it should be somewhat competitive, but not too competitive. We'll see what happens
good luck to everyone who is running 4th of July races
going out for a 60min run right now, i think ill take it easy cause i might do at least part of a 2mile time trial with some friends afterward. I also might do a race on the 4th, either the 5k or 10miler i havent decided. I've really got nothing to shoot for since i havent done any real training lately but it should be fun. Oh and kdogg/lexb, good luck with yalls races!
i ended up going 50 min (@ 7min pace) then rabbited a 2 mile time trial for my friend when i got back. He wanted to go out at 4:50 but he started to fall off the pace at about the 4th lap so I slowed down for him. We hit the first mile in 4:58 and the 2nd mile in about 5:17 for a 10:15. He was happy with it and i was happy cause i could have picked it up a lot and still felt good.
7 miler last night. Probably ran my long run a bit fast on Sunday. was still sore in the calves. So I think I have learnt my lesson. I am going to follow the program to the letter.....
6.5 km today. I was too lazy to get out of bed early (I work shifts and its my first break day) so I ended up running between 10 and 11. Even though its winter over here it was still full on sunshine and high humidity. Very nasty. All the running Ive done recently has been at night at about 10 degrees C.
All in all I found it waay harder than I expected!
4.10 miles x 5 min interval sessions /2min jog. steady run tonight.
Aim tonight was a 10 min effort and 2x5min efforts. Got close enough to 2.5km which included the big uphill. To say I hurt was a bit of an udnerstatement. The first of the shorter efforts was downhill and with the wind so got out about 1.3km, uphill and into the wind on the way back wasnt so successful, but did alright. Finished with a couple of uphill 250m.
Remberly I know what you say about the humidity in Cairns. I was there when it wasnt so humid, and it was humid!!!
And good to see we have pushed through the 1000posts. That must be a record for mapmyrun. Surely a prize for all contributors is on its way. I would like to thank all those who have helped inspire me to get my running where it is today. Here's to the next 1000
woohooo...rest day. really felt like I needed it this week.
kdcary: Welcome to the thread. Keep up the training, don't over do mileage/time increase and get hurt, and your time will come down :)
Hi All - excellent reporting of training, making me feel a bit under done. fighting off a cold and sinus yuks right now so low miles.
Did 1 hour of boxing with a professional this week - feels awesome to cross train so hard at such a technical sport. I think I may have a new passion as well as running. lats, and rhomboids hurt today from the drills - but look out badguys - I have a good left hook!
Wow, more new posters! Cool! Welcome one and all.
Got in 6.5k on Mon morning before catching the plane(s) to Qingdao province in China mid-afternoon. Easy, steady running while I get my milage back up again.
Ran from the hotel down to the waterfront this morning and then followed an out and back course to total roughly 6.5k again. Now, if I can stop working these ridiculous 12 hour days I can stay reasonably consistent with my running.
SimmoT - I haven't got as far as planning another actual marathon yet, will check the running calendars when I get back home later this month.
LexB - I've taken part in several relay runs over the years, the longest one being the 100 mile "Round the Mountain" event put on by the Army around the central North Island mountains in New Zealand. They are really good to take part in and the camaraderie you build is not to be missed. Whatever you do, enjoy it.
Run on one and all.
Rest day today which I am told is an important part of training, which is good advice for life, too. So don't forget to schedule some "kick back and relax" time into your life. End of sermon.
kdcary: Welcome. Don't worry about the times . . . just stick with it and the overall benefits of running will soon be evident. What I like about this thread is the diversity of ability and experience represented. We've got the speedsters, naturally athletic, high school/college track experienced, genetically blessed with lean frames types. And we've got the newbies to running, constantly battling with weight, slower pace plodders. And every combination in between, all just coming online to motivate and be motivated.
Braved my sad snotty nose and chough for a 6.5kms up some hills round home before the sun was up. Felt pleased to get around in a moderate pace of 5.4min/kms.
Longer run tomorrow - no kids to wake me up - so maybe a little sleep in and then run when the sun is up!
3.3miles through fields. enjoyable but hard work. seems that once I have my first walk break, mentally i find it hard to keep going without incorporating more and more breaks. anyone else experience this - am sure its more of a mind over matter thing?
FBP - I wonder if it is a mind over matter thing. Perhaps you "reward" yourself at set times - walking only when you have managed 1.5 miles say then walk for five mins - then run home - and walk only when you are at the corner of your street. That way - you plan a walking break in your run - rather than sucumbing to the - I have already walked so I guess it doesn't matter now - mind set.
good luck!
ran a nice 8 miles today. took a couple of days off to rest the body, and then will be going hard until the half mara. on the 27th. hope everyone has a great 4th.
Had the day off (Happy Birthday, USA!) so I slept in this morning rather than get up for my normal early morning run. After a few tasks around the house and then driving my wife and two of my sons to the airport for their trip to KY, I headed out around NOON for my run. Beautiful day for running with not much humidity or heat. My training schedule had me doing 7 miles today and 10 miles tomorrow, but I decided to switch it around. So I did 10 miles today and I set a goal of finishing in 85 minutes (8:30/mile). I finished in 86 minutes which I was very pleased with considering the course had some big hills. Started to die on the last hill about 1.5 from the end, but kept going.
Tomorrow my run will only be 7 miles. A year ago I would have never linked the word "only" with 7 miles, but that's how I see it now.
tried to race this morning, but my achilles wouldn't have it. Sucks because there was 100 bucks to be won and the winning time was only 4:33 for a mile, I've been running just a couple seconds slower than that when messing around...I hate my achilles, gahhhh!!
I'm happy that I can still run in trainers + heel lifts. Looks like I will be missing my big race on the 19th though unless this miraculously goes away
9/6 double for the day
only 4:33?! Hah! I could run a mile in twice as long as that! (Actually I couldn't even do that probably, darn it)
SUPER long run tonight (for me) with my nemesis... the mega-hill that is dempsey road. I couldn't log it correctly in my training as there wasn't a category for 'mountain workouts'.
Told myself I would make it without stopping. I did have to stop 3 times to get my breath back but I didn't walk any of it so I am proud of my effort. And it was a lot of effort. Especially after the long slow climb before it. I'm gonna hurt tomorrow.
9 miles in 1hr27m - (9.57 pace) not bad for an easy run with crazy hills
yeah, only 4:33! I think I cracked 12 minutes for a two miler way back in my early days in the Navy when I was about 21! (Hmm... maybe that's wishful thinking and I actually managed to get just under 13.)
Today was a much more sane 7km at around 6min per km mark. My legs are really heavy from working all day on the concrete floor in the factory. Should be able to build back up again in time to do a serious 10k on Marathon day.
gfinkelde - Barring further incidents, I hope to be there on Marathon day and with any luck, I can be there to see you over the line. Any other Melbournians need cheering on?
greast speed workout (for me) ,200,400,800,1200, up and downs and then 100 sprints,. shew(i hate the speed days..lol..but i did do my best time in the 100, 14.10",. i know thats a jog for you kdogg, lol.. but for me i was physched..cant wait for my long run tommorrow . blew off an hour worth of fireworks last night for the grandkids, and had a great cookout,,.mmm,. lots of carbs..should hav great energy for run...been having trouble with energy drain between runs lately and trying to change my diet ,.not with much success though. ever since i moved into the 45-50 mile weeks i hav been having troubles,. any suggestions??,.i still need to drop 10-15 lbs to get to my ideal weight by oct race .congrats to all whgo raced on the 4th!
11 miles today, well...10.75, in an hour and 33 minutes. 8:40 per mile....WAY faster than I was supposed to run. Mapped out a new route with way fewer steep hills than my previous workouts, which may explain why the time was too fast.
kdogg, here's some prize money for ya-
8k race in Kingsport TN: $5,000 first place. PLUS if you can set the world record at this event, a $10,008 bonus. First place men's last year was 22:16. 4:30 per mile? I thought about running this race, (no, wouldn't come close to winning) but it doesn't fit in my training plan for the marathon.
3.2 miles in 29:18 today. Beautiful weather, 72 and sunny right now. Calves definitely don't like changing form to land on forefoot. They are protesting greatly. Had to revert to my former form after about 3/4 mile. Continuing a slow buildup of my mileage. kdogg - I'm aiming to catch up with your weekly mileage in about 2040 or so.
Great 8 miler again in the rain this morning. felt good to be out there watching everyone scurry from tree to tree!.
getting ready for the half mara in 3 weeks.
7.1 mile pace run (goal was 9 min/mile, my planned marathon pace). Finished in 63:34 so was right on target.
This was a stepback week in training so next week the mileage increases: Here's the plan (Sun-REST; Mon-4 miles, comfortable pace; Tues-8 miles, progression run; Wed-4 miles, comfortable pace; Thurs-REST; Fri-8 miles pace/tempo run at 9 min/mile; Sat-16 miles, long run at 10 min/mile)
repetreccajr: I am having a hard time picturing running so you land on your forefoot. How is it possible to run and not land to some degree heel to toe?
60 min run for me today. did 4.44 miles. no group run this morning since it's a holiday weekend. so, i slept in and didn't go running until right before 2 pm. not the best plan as it's hot and a bit sticky. nice breeze in the shade though. =) at least it's over. hope everyone is having a nice holiday weekend spending time with family and friends. happy running!
rememberly - i saw a turkey in the road on my way to work the other day!
Hi All, 12.1 this morning in glorious Melbourne winter sun. I love the weather here some times. 10.8km/hr pace. Not great/not terrbile. Legs felt like lead - but I pushed on anyway!
20 mile long run with the 6:15 am crew...waking up sucks so bad, but being done this early in the day is great
lol junkie, 22:16 for an 8k is so freaking fast. My fastest 8k ever is 25:55 or something and thats during the 10k on a track (but I do plan on running much faster this fall if I can enter a few races). So if I'm racing against those types of guys, they'd run 9k before my 8k was done!!
Had a lovely run today, it wasn't a good run but I enjoyed it. I decided to hit the trails instead of pounding pavement and had a lovely run up the mosquito creek trail close to my home. I haven't done much trail running tho so I found it really hard work as the first part of the trail was so 'hilly' with short, steep climbs all over the place. It really knackered me out, I was fairly tired at the start anyway following Fridays long run. The second part of the trail was a long slow, and still moderately steep climb. I was pretty exhausted so stopped every now and then and walked a bit and walked a stretch that was really ungroomed.
I can't map the trails properely as I don't know exactly where the paths go so my estimate is about 12k in about 1hr20mins or so when you take off the walking chunks.
BUT it was so beautiful and I had such a nice time there that I'll just chalk that one down for fun more than anything else
8.65 miles yesterday, the first 5 at tempo run-pace (about 7:45-8:15 per mile), then about 9:30-10:30 for the last three, with about a three minute walk after five miles (digestive distress is a b!&$h!!!). Felt great running, but my shins are screaming now!! Been having issues ever since my half marathon. I'm thinking I may have to cut the speed work out for now. Anyone have any opinions on using a bike for speedwork, just until I get my shinsplints under control? Is it possible to ride with a high cadence and have it translate into quickness in running? I'll still be doing my long runs and recovery runs, but my shins seem to hurt worst after speedwork. Any advice would be great (other than just plain resting, not enough time before the marathon for me to slip too far off my training plan). Good luck and keep running.
hey dan, I will say that when I was making my comeback to running a little less than a year ago I was on the bike a lot so I could get aerobic benefit without destroying my body by running too much mileage too soon.
By the end of the season I was able to comfortably do speed work with a lot of our top guys who had been doing speed work all season and had summer base mileage. So I think cycling definitely helps your aerobic fitness (and your ability to handle the stresses of running - I was able to increase my mileage much faster than I would have done otherwise), but I will be honest and say I don't think you can really get the same benefits from speed work on the bike as you would running. If you are using cycling to cross train for running, you should be doing fairly high cadence anyway (I ride between 85 and 110, closer to the upper range most of the time).
If you have no other option, then maybe you could try cycling in lieu of speed work, but if you definitely cannot do speed work and it is possible I think you should try aqua jogging. Obviously, you will have to train based on effort rather than distance, but aqua jogging for speed workouts will give you benefits almost exactly like that of doing actual speed workouts. Many of my team's top runners are very fragile and basically lived in the pool this past season with very high success.
Had a great 4th of July 7 mile Race with my brother. I ran with him and being that it was his first race in 18 years we did about a 10 min mile pace. It was good to just finish together.
I signed up for the Asics 100 miles in 30 days challenge. Just completed a 6 miler tonight. Started with a 9min mile and finished with a 7+ min mile with an average 8:12 pace. I felt really good. And, in 30 days will be Beach to Beacon. Hope I get in the top 1200.
Dan, the bike is what has helped me get my speed up. I bike almost every day. Most days it's just to work and back, but I try and race my bike and cars home. Kind of doesn't work that well going to work. But I'm finding that I have better speed control when running.
Run safe
This is my first post in these forums, so bear with me...
A year ago I started running and since then have lost 45 lbs, quit smoking, cut back on the red meat, and cut back the drinking...
After a couple of injuries I'm finally back on the wagon...Currently i am 5'7'' and 177lbs. Still a little on the pudgy side, my BMI suggests I should be in the 150's but I also have a medium-to large build
i signed up for the 100 miles in 30 days challenge they have and start tomorrow...
today i did a 1.5 mile sprint and then a 2 mile easy run...tomorrow starts with at least 3.3 miles a day...woohoo!
Ran 6.5 miles today.
3.16 miles today. Pushing turnover rtate and trying to keep my strides short. Seems to translate into faster speed for me. completed the course in 28:06, 1:10 faster than the same course on Saturday. Right knee is a little achy, not sure if it is weather related or what. Been that way all weekend.
Rememberley - Good question about not landing to some degree heel-toe. I believe that I am proving to myself, that at least for me, it is not possible to land on my forefoot for any lenght of time. There was some discussion a couple months back on one of the forums about form. One person said that "proper form" was to run up on your toes, as if you are running barefoot out into the street to snatch your child out from under a truck. I contended that form couldn't be kept up for distance running. Consensus seemed to be that landing on your heels and rolling forward to your toes is bad for you and bad for your speed. Mid-foot footstrike seems to be what folks consider best form, bu I don't know how to translate that into actual mechanics of running. I can run up on my toes - for short distances. I can run heel-toe for medium to long distances. If I try running with a "mid-foot" strike, it feels like my feet are slapping the ground all at once and is very jarring.
