Hope you feel better soon Pappypage! And many good thoughts toward all of you having "off" runs. I'm still slowly building up, and feeling so good, but I don't seen any kind of a run for me today. Every minute more "to do's" keep piling up! Maybe I'll at least get in a nice long stretch session tonight. I think we should ALL move to Hawaii. I'll have my people call your people....

i would like to report that i have nothing to report! no running since last saturday except that one time i was late to class lol. I've had more coke in the past 3 days than the entire season, and not one glass of water haha!

Some of my friends and I are going to do a time trial on friday just for kicks and giggles. We just got a new mondo track (the fastest surface they make) so we have to go break it in before the sprinters get out there ;) Its just a for fun thing so we arent trying to pr or anything.

p.s.  i forgot that coke means coca cola everywhere but here. We use it instead of pop or soda or whatever yall use. So to clarify, i meant dr. pepper.... lots of it.

p.s.#2    do yall even have dr. pepper? If not you're missing out, its amazing!

I love Dr. Pepper!  It is my favoite.  FYI - My sister lives in Mexico - they think Dr. Pepper is disgusting.  They obviouly don't know what good soda is:)

I am training for my first 50 mile ultra marathon in March.  I have done 2 50Ks before so this will be my longest running race.  I am trying to get motivated to leave my house to train.  Unfortunatly, transmission on my 2006 Nissan Xterra (yes, 2006) is fried.  It has been in the shop since last Friday with a $4000 dollar bill waiting for me when I pick it up.  The whole thing (the Xterra not the ultramarathon) has made me depressed and unmotivated.  I am suppose to go on a 8 mile run on trails today.  I would love to drive to the trails and then run. But since there are no trails within 4 miles of my home, I am destined to run on concrete and pavement.  Ugghhh!

I hope everyone is having a better day than me.  I hope you appreciate your working transmission, and if you are close to trails and dirt - I hope you appreciate those too;)

chiggy - getting the first run on a new track is such a sweet feeling. We are getting a new one up here, I am gonna try and break in and get the first workout on it before the Notre Dame guys hit it up.

I used to refer to all soda/pop as coke, but like you said it gets kinda confusing. haha. Dr. Pepper is the best, I think probably 10% of my bloodstream is Dr. Pepper.

I hit the track today and did a light workout. 12x400 at ~75 with ~75 rest, nothing too tough just something to get my legs moving a bit. It was really windy and I ran in trainers because I'm battling a minor foot injury and didn't want to bang up the foot any more than I had to.

Wow, I'm pretty proud of myself. I went 12.5 just now, took me around 105 minutes, but I could care less. Its the farthest I have ever run. I was going to go run 7, but I felt so good I kept going. Its like I hit my stride once at 4 miles or so, then hit an even faster one at 7. It was a pretty cool feeling. Boring route though-- Along the Mississippi, I ran to and across the Lake St. bridge, and then down and across the Ford Parkway bridge-- I did that loop twice.

3.5 mile tempo for me today - short and fast (ish) not near my best but 26:55 which makes a 7:59 pace plus my watch did something wacky out there so may have been a bit faster.

Also had kickboxing this morning - pure kicking session pretty much so after that and yesterdays hill sprints my legs need a break!

tomorrow is a well earned day of rest : ) now for moussaka and cheesecake!

Krose - I did have a goal for the half marathon back in Sept. but that was before I had a muscle pull that kept me out of running for 3 weeks of Oct.  I went from 130+ miles/month in August/Sept to about 40 in Oct.  Prior to the injury, I thought I was on track to do the half in 1:45 or at about and 8min/mile pace.  Now, I just want to finish with a time around 2 hours or so. The injury seems to have cleared up but my motivation level is still suffering a bit.  So for this first one, I just want to get through it OK.  I'll run another on Feb 1 and maybe then I can shoot for the 1:45.

MAN it was hard dragging myself out of bed at stupid o'clock for it but I'm glad I made the effort.  Ran my fastest 6km to date at a 4:58/km pace (a shade below the 8min/mile mark)

MarkRTC...I loved your comment!!  It is weird how you think about other people running when you are out there.  This morning it was 14.......that is on the F scale for all you friends down there!  Snow lightly falling.  I bumped up to 4 1/4 miles in 38 :24.  I am still on target to get up to five every other day with cross training on my off days.  Once I get there I think I will start varying my runs and put in a goal.  Oh yeah  I ran in new shoes today... they were great!!!!

14 miles on the bike this AM.  Another commute to work. 1hour 10 minutes (again).  It may take a lot more effort before I see my commuting times come down an appreciable amount.  On the bright side, I'm lowering my carbon footprint.

First of all Dr Pepper is the best!

Ran 5.3 miles on the treadmill last night.  Going on vacation to OBX North Carolina for the week.  Should be some decent running weather.  And I love running in places I don't know.  It's a cool way to explore.  Running in a 5k Turkey Trot on Thursday in Duck, NC.

I live in Pennsylvania.  We got hit with 2 inches of snow today and it's about 25 degrees F here right now.  Not ideal running weather at all.  Thank God for treadmills and indoor tracks.

Wow.....i haven't been able to post for a week..and i get back and there are a million and 1 posts...along with a bunch of new people!  Welcome new people!!   :)

So, I was in California last week and should have ran because the temp was 90 degrees everyday!!  but i didn't.....and I feel ike scum for it!  i did do a nice little hike through the mountains..but...it wasn't enough.  When I returned to the cold of NJ,  I got sick AGAIN....

I finally forced myself out yesterday and did a really nice 5.5 miles at 8:40 pace...which is the pace i want to maintain..so i was happy about that.  Yesterday was the coldest temp I had to run in so far...it was 30 degrees out.  Next Sunday is the 15k and I haven't really put in the miles....I will attempt it on sunday or monday.  Tonite im at work and will do some stairclimbing on my break.

Thanks to everyone who responded to my "thought question"  So...I'll keep my mouth shut about form...and I'll continue to nod at the passerbys....good to hear different opinions!

I hope everyone has a great weekend!  Mine shall be swamped with Studying and paper writing galore!

ok so today we did a little time trial to break in our new track. 4 of us went out there they were all planning on doing a mile and i was gonna do a 3k. Well after a 68 and 70 for a 2:18 at 800m i decided i didnt want to do a 3k. Five more laps just didnt sound very good. So i kicked up the pace a few notches and ran 64, 67 for a 4:29. Kept it somewhat comfortable since it was just for fun. My calves are really sore though, its the first time i've been on a track in 6 mothns.

Oh and funny story, we went to play basketball afterwards and after 1 game my legs were dead of course since i had just run my time trial. So i was just kinda shuffling around and one guy told me," you need to work on your cardio man we just started playng!" haha i laughed on the inside.

around 11 miles today @ 8 minutes per mile.

here's my funny, or not so funny story for this run. While I've stumbled on several runs, today I stubbed my foot on a raised piece of sidewalk. After a couple stumbling steps I had to veer into the grass, where I managed to do a forward roll, and came up running. I'm fairly clumsy, so I'm surprised this is my first fall while running.

So, what is everyone's opinion on: What is the lowest temperature you can safely run at?

Junkie - it depends on many other factors, such as wind chill, altitude, etc.  Breathing very cold air, especially through your mouth, becomes dangerous at certain temps.  But I don't think there is a magic temperature that is unsafe.  There are many factors involved.

Hadn't planned on a run today but my mate wanted to go out so I braved the strong winds and hailstorms.

We just took it nice and easy and done 10.78 miles in 1:25:58 - 7:57 pace

Back in front of the fire now and glad I went out. Legs feel ok. Should be able to get a 6-8 miles run in tomorrow evening hopefully

Hey there.  I had a crack at some "speed" work in the weekend. Ran to a training programme I downloaded from itunes called "Increase Your Speed 1" by Hamish Carter.  Hamish won gold in the triathalon at Athens in 04, and so I figure he should know something about running.  Ran first 10 minutes easy, then 4 minutes at 70-75% of full pace, 3 minutes recovery, 3 minutes at 80%, 3 minutes recovery, 2 minutes at 90%, 2 minutes recovery, then 1 minute at 95-100% (like you're within site of the finish line, and trying to overtake that one last runner...), followed by 10 minutes recovery.  It was hard work, but I really enjoyed it and felt great for the rest of the day.  I'm trying to settle in to an off season training plan of 2 runs (5 or 10K) during the week, a speed session on Sat and long run on Sunday, and according to Runners World, if I keep that up I should only be 4 weeks away from peak at any one time Tongue out We'll see...

Great long run today.  Was just aiming for time...I wanted to do a 2hr run...longest run by 15 mins.  I did 11.24 miles at 10:40 pace.  I actually thought I went further....but..okay....i'll take it.  I had a partner today...who joined me at my 5 mile mark....and that worked well.  I had someone to sprint the last 1/2 mile with.

I'm beginning to think I really, really like cold weather runs.  I sweat so much more, which makes me *feel* like im working harder and I really like the seansation of feeling my body warm up.  And...it feels like just another race ...race against yourself, race against the temperature.  love it.

Junkie... there is an article in Runner's World Jan 2008 about running temps.  The most ideal temps to run are between 36-52 degrees F for endurance runners....with the optimal at 52. Less than 36 degrees is fine...but add 2% to your goal time.  According to the article...the only exceptions for staying in are a)  if you want to do speed repeats and b) if the windchill drops below -20 F   So there you go.....we got some time before the temps are that low..:)

Gilly...why would you even answer that question?!!?  your lowest temp is what...?  50??   ever!?   lol......

    Baseroom....up to 4 1/4?!?!  congrats!!!   go you!   :)

Awesome trail run for me today. Did about 9 miles I think, I borrowed my boyfriend's iPhone and tried out the iMapmyrun and it didn't work too well on the trails. I think I must have lost reception at some point as the phone said 7.5 miles and the route it showed was not the route I ran. Looking forward to getting my timex sleek fitness tracker phone which has a foot pod for pace/speed/distance and being able to do this accurately. Was a little bit wet on the trails today so quite slippy therefore I had to take it slow (saw one accident with a cyclist coming off) plus having to get used to slowing down for the trail. I think I was running between a 9:30 and 10:00 pace, it took me about an hour and a half in total.

So beautiful though - a really amazing route and perfect weather!

    have a great week everyone

LexB-  yes today was one of those AWESOME days to live in the Pacific Northwest.  I ran home(from a friend's wine shop) around 4:15PM tpday. It was a mostly westerly route so I going towards the sunset.  It was a balmy 54 outside, clear with just enough clouds to give the sunset some color.  Beautiful end to a gorgeous day.

Okay, with all the running in ice stories and getting out there in spite of being sick stories, I'm the wimp. We walked the Holiday Parade on Saturday, not far, but the w-a-i-t-i-n-g. It took an hour before we even got started on our turn to walk. Which, really, isn't so bad, except I was wearing a bear suit and trying to make sure the young people with us stayed close by and didn't run in front of a bus or something. Just trashed me! Lots of reasons (past my feeding time, skipped my morning coffee...) But I really thought I'd be physically better since I've been running regularly. Then again, it was the waiting that trashed me. Once we moved life was good. So maybe I have improved. Should I train for sitting around as well as running? Cover both sides? Hmmmmm.

It's been a while since I posted so here goes... I've been working on my distance and speed lately.  My short lunch time runs are now 5.5 miles and my longer weekend runs are now (only) just under 7 miles.  Yesterday on my longer run I finished it for the first time in under an 8 minute pace, which is great for me on that run because it is so hilly.  Normally I run it in an 8:15 to 8:30 pace but yesterday came in just under 8 minutes (about 7:56 or so I think).  This compliments my pr that I ran last week... 3 miles in 21 minutes flat on the road.  Today's run was 5.5 miles in 41:08.

     I feel great!

Tranquil - it sounds to me like you are not stretching.  You really need to spend some time on your cool down (walking) and stretching; particularly after your long runs.  Also, point well taken regarding my answer on running in dangerous temps.

A Fantastic 12 mile run to start the week for me.  Absolutely perfect weather for running (50 degrees; partly cloudy; light breeze).  It was like running in paradise.

Just a 14 mile bike for me today.  Work to home, 1 hour 13 minutes including the trip up the hill at the end.   That's a 7 minutes faster than my last trip home on the bike and I managed to bike 1/4 way up the hill (I run it up the rest of the way).  It was another gorgeous day in the pacific northwest!
