I'm doing a virtual tour across the US.  I created a map that starts in Atlantic City, NJ.  I plan to take US route 40 west.  If you want to do this too, just create a map with a starting point in Atlantic City and trace your mileage on #40.  I started my trip on September 1st, so if you do this, please log your miles you have on and after that date.  You can view my map at:

    http://www.mapmyride.com/ride/united-states/nj/atlantic-city/349035146

Note: I cross train - walk, run, cycle.  For this a mile is a mile, no matter how you cover it.

I'll be interested in the response to this.  It's not necessarily a race, but I can see that it could be a little competitive.  Be honest.

This is a cool idea. I will join you on your "virtual trek" across the country. I did 11.2 miles today to start. Here's the link to my map:

This is a fantastic idea. I decided to tweek it a little though. My goal this year is to ride 2000 miles, so I'm going to start from my home town near St. Louis and try to make it to the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco, which Google Maps says is right around that distance. Here's my virtual ride route so far:

    http://www.mapmyride.com/route/united-states/mo/frontenac/672330637

Like you, I've decided to take the interstate -- though it would be extra-cool to find a scenic route that one could really ride. I decided to put a little rest stop at the end of each month's mileage. January and February already have me through Missouri!

Thanks for this awesome idea - great extra motivation!

How are we able to keep a map going like this?

Do we save it to our desk top, or are we able to keep editing previously saved runs?  Also, does adding to runs like this affect the goals that we are participating in through the site?

Thank you for helping me out....and I love the idea.

How to keep going on a map:

On the page that shows all your routes, to the right there is a link to "edit". Clicking this will take you to the route and you can just start clicking to add new points to the end. When you're finished there is a button in the top left toolbar that says "Save and Continue". Then you go through the steps to update your route.

As for your question about tracking goals, I don't think it will - since you will never actually record a workout that references your virtual route.

    Have fun!

How is everyone's virtual route going?

For me, keeping track of the miles this way is extremely motivating.  Typically I can't wait to extend my virtual route each day and see how much further it get me!

What a cool idea! I did a "walk the coast of Florida" virtual map years ago before Google pedometer. I think I'll try something like that again. It's very motivational!! Thanks for the inspiration!

Great idea!  This is going to be fun.  I've never been to the East Coast before!  I decided to join your little challenge, so I chartered a virtual plane, I was going to fly commercial but with all the cancellations and things lately, I didn't want to chance it!  Besides my employer only gave me 4 virtual months to finish it or he's going to virtually fire me rear!  I figured I'd better get started right away.  I decided to do a little virtual gambling before I got on the bike and headed out of town.  I virtually lost everything but my cycling shoes and bike.  I thought I was going to have to run, but thanks to the good virtual lord I won the last virtual hand and saved my ride.  Unfortunately I have to do it virtually nekked  save for my shoes. Tongue out  I'm looking forward to cruising across the countryside and finishing up on the west coast somewhere.  I haven't decided where yet!  Here's my map, for those of you keeping tabs:

Good luck to all making the trip and keep the virtual rubber side down!  And thanks for the great idea!!!

Thanks for the idea- since I'm training for the Rock n Roll Half Marathon in Virginia Beach on Aug. 31st, I thought I'd map my virtual run towards Virginia Beach (giving myself credit for the 100 miles I've already done in the past month and a half).  Upping my mileage from 20 to 25 miles a week will probably get me there on time.

    Hey Lizie,

All you really have to do is to map a new run.  Find a place were you want to start from.  and start off your map.  Mark down exactly how far you have traveled on your walk and then save the map.  Once you go out again for a second walk, just go to your maps and open the map and select edit this rout or run.  (this will be found in a line of text just above the map in question.)  Then continue to add more points to your run untill you reach the distance covered on the new day or on the new group of days.  then save again.

It also helps a lot if you keep a training log, seeing that it will keep a running total for you on the screen, to make it easier to know exactly how far you should be on you map.

If you need any more help with this leave a message and Ill help how ever i can!

    Steve,

I'm actually headed to San Diego. i am going to hook up with the I40 in Winston-Salem. I though I'd stop in at Durham and see a virtual baseball game. Once I hit the I40, I'll go all the way to Barstow, CA and head south. I really look forward to posting as many miles as I can as often as I can. This has been a blast!

Looks like you're trekking along nicely.

Great! Great! Great idea! I'm looking forward to plotting out my attack the North West. I'm going to apply my mileage from the last two months of running. Is adding mileage pretty easy? I mean it seems like it might be a tad frustrating to add 4.09 miles or the such. I don't think that I would have ever thought to do this without perusing the forum here so thanks!

Eric, when you are in Barstow you MUST go to the Idle Spurs Steakhouse for a virtual dinner.  It is a very cool place that I found by chance many years ago, and I have dreampt of returning ever since.  Mmmmmmmmmmmmm, good times. :-)

Hey, now that's awesome!  Thanks Floridan!  I'm making some stops along the way.  I cruised through the campus at Notre Dame and then I went down to DC and cruised Pennsylvania ave.  I'm currently working my way up to Pittsburgh to check out Heinz Field.  I'm kinda taking the scenic route. Laughing  That map is really great though!

Thank you. Im glad that you guys like it.

Once a month sounds good. If I missed anyone that would like to be included in next months composite let me know.

The Northeast seems to have a lot of action so those routes will be blown out instead of overlaid. (Unless I figure out a better way to do it.)

    Floridan, that's a heck of a map!

After reading everyone else, I decided to join in. I'm starting just East of Birmingham, Al and running/biking/walking/hiking/swimming to Mobile, Al for a total of 271miles. So far this month I've covered just over 54 and am in Jemison, Al. After reaching Mobile, I'm heading East along the coast down through Florida and end wherever I can.

    So, here's my map:

I have created a group that is open to anyone to join called
: Virtual Tour Group < Link to the group.

I have a couple ideas that I am looking to implement.

    1) I have figured a better way to display routes that overlap.

    2) Monthly percentage increase updates.

So if you would like to be included in the global map please join the group. It will make things a little easier for me if you do.

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hope that everyone is pushing forward with thier Vitrual Tours. I'm nearly to the state capital. When I get there I'm gonna Gator Chomp some Seminoles.

Sorry for slacking off- I finally got around to putting my miles on the map, and I've nearly made it to Chapel Hill.  I took a few laps around Lowe's Motor Speedway outside of Charlotte on my way out, and then followed the coastline (or went swimming) around Badin Lake.

Floridian- thanks for the good work; everything looks great.  Not to burden you with more work, but could you change my custom signature thing to read "Pretz" instead of "Pertz"?  Thanks, and again, thanks for setting everything up nice.

No problem Pretz as in pretzel. Sorry about the incorrect spelling. Right now I had misplaced a critical thumb drive that had all of my work on it so it may be a little bit before I can change it. Thanks for pointing that out to me. I have it wrong on the Global map too. Keep moving.
