I recently started running and have been doing quite well.  I find myself being able to run long distances however my running shorts keep getting in my way causing me to have to stop earlier than I wanted to!! They keep running up on my legs.  I have tried two different types of shorts- a running skirt and short mesh shorts but both types run up on my legs and hurt so much!! What can I do?  Can anyone recommend a type of short that will stay in place for long runs?

    Thanks!!

Compression shorts are the way to go for this problem.  Like biking shorts but without the padding, they'll stay where they belong.  And don't wear loose shorts over them unless your thighs don't touch or you'll just end up with all that fabric bunched up in your crotch!... If your thighs don't touch you don't have this problem ;)  You can get these types of shorts from most sports stores.

I swear by these Nike running shorts: http://www.nike.com/index.jhtml?cp=USNS_KW_SU07_US_Google_B&ref=http://www.google.com&l=nikestore,grid,_grid,f-12002+4294967255/s-Running%20Shorts&re=US&co=US&la=EN&ef_id=1778:3:s_698e0719d3549866925bcfd5afbf966d_860388070:XnIf8NB6B3YAACFvB1AAAAAg:20080604204946#l=nikestore,grid,_pdp,cid-1/gid-162677/pid-162681,_grid,f-10001+12002+26005+4294967255&re=US&co=US&la=EN

They are SO comfy, and always stay in place.  I can't run in anything else! I got my roomate addicted as well.  The only problem she has with them is chafing on the inner thigh, which is easily preventable if you use glide.  I'm pretty sure that these are the predominant type of shorts sold in the Nike section at Dick's.  Anyway, I guess everyone has their own short they fall in love with, for me it's this one.  Hope that helps.

I have to be in total agreement with other posters to this thread, in favor of bike shorts/compression shorts. Being an overweight beginning walker-jogger, I found these to be a true lifesaver for the skin on my inner thighs!  And, if you get a great fabric (moisture-wicking), you'll find they are greater "drip-dry" (especially when you're on the road and walk/run every day!).  (Special note for post-menopausal women suffering from stress incontinence:  you'll find these types of shorts a necessity and a lifesaver if you have any 'accidents' on your routes!!) :)

Nike running shorts are the only shorts I can run in.  they don't ride up at all!

I really like Nike Tempo shorts--no chafing, very lightweight. And I don't have skinny legs!

    Can you run in pants?

I run in yoga pants, they're pretty thin so not too hot. I'm sun sensitive (prone to skin cancer, unfortunately) so I also like the added coverage.

Nike shorts and Chamion shorts work well for me. Buy shorts that are actually labeled "running shorts" and have the inner "underwear" layer inside...most of these shorts will not ride up.

You can also buy compression chaffing shorts to wear under all your shorts.

Also, make sure you're tightening your waist band with the drawstrings (on running shorts), and this will help greatly!

I really like Brooks Epiphany (I think this is the "model") running shorts.  They're made from a really soft, lightweight technical fabric.  The seam on the side also allows your leg to move generously without showing too much, which helps with the ride-up issue. The inner drawstring sometimes bugs me a little, but these are my go-to shorts for long runs.  I trained for (and ran) a half marathon in these last year with no issues.

Someone else mentioned Glide, an anti-chafing agent that comes in a stick (kind of like deodorant). A little bit of this on your legs where the fabric tends to rub might also do the trick--that stuff is a skinsaver!

Like AK22 mentioned, Nike and Champion shorts work well for me also -

Most importantly, Body Glide is my lifesaver - used like deodorant, just rub it in the inner thigh area before each run. It helps with any chafing, espcially for long runs, and it assists in keeping my shorts from riding up.

You could also try some champion Dri-Fit capri length running pants if you didn't want full length pants.

     Hope that helps! Good luck!

I would hav eto say that compresson shorts and bodyglide are my best friends on the long runs! They have saved my inner thighs for miles of aching pain and annoying healing time! Just make sure you get long enough shorts so they don't go north as you run! Good Luck!

I run in the tight spandex (compression shorts) they don't ride up and stay put.  It took me a while to not be too self conscious (I have issues about looking fat), but I've gotten over that and just run in them.  So much better than having to stop every mile to tug down the shorts riding up.

I have always loved the way running skorts look but in just about any brand I tried (Brooks, Champion, RunningSkirts.com), the inner short would always ride up.  I solved the problem with a pair of compression shorts underneath the skort.  It sounds like it would be tight and binding but it really isn't.  I always feel confident and well covered running in this combination.  The compression shorts never ride up and the skort gives me the coverage I desire.

Hi, I'm glad I found this discussion. I have 3 scars already on my inner thighs due to shorts chaffing - and yesterday, I had to walk the last 4 miles of my planned 10 mile run because I realised my new running shorts had been chafing me.  In Aus, we call it piking when you don't finish what you start.  That's what I feel like I'm doing when I have to walk.  It's so frustrating that skin (not fitness) is determining whether I go the distance at the pace I want.

I've only really started running this year thanks to a Guy Leach (former Aussie Iron Man multiple times over) running program published in my FitnessFirst gym magazine in March 2008.  Guy's running program got me up to running 10kms for the first time in my life (I'd been pushing myself to do 4.5 kms and struggling) so I guess that's why I hadn't noticed how shorts can be assassins.  Since I moved to the US in May this year, I've been able to notch up the miles (so many more in kms!) fairly well and have unfortunately found that after about 5 miles most of my shorts start to ride up.  Even my  basketball shorts rode up!  As others to this discussion have pointed out, compression leggings don't ride, but they also are much more expensive purchases generally.  Particularly if you're from Australia - they cost generally between $90-$150 each.  As running gear (esp shoes!) is super cheap in the US (Americans are super lucky, that's all I can say!), I went out and purchased a few new pairs of running shorts - and every single pair (yes, I bought Nike, Champion, Moving Comfort lined ones) rode up besides the 3/4 length compression pant.

So, looks like I will be investing in this Glide thingy and timing my longer runs to the day after the laundry is done.

    Stevie

What does the inner layer do?

Ive just bough some addidas running shorts. I like them, but cant really see what the random mesh layer does!

I think the inner layer underwear layer is perhaps a different issue than what most of the posters were talking about. There is the issue of shorts riding up between your thighs if your thighs rub against each other. And then there is the other issue of your underwear riding up as well. Personally, I don't like the shorts with the underwear built in because it's like granny panties and they feel weird on me. I just wear undies that I know don't ride up on me normally and that works out fine. As for the inner thigh issue, I am also partial to basketball shorts as someone else mentioned. If I were in better shape, I might wear tight fitting shorts instead, but I don't want to subject anyone to the sight of my jiggling hind quarters as I run by. And it's way too hot right now to wear an oversized t-shirt to cover up.
