Hey,
I was wonder if anyone out there uses any form of GPS for rides?
I have been looking into the Garmin Edge 605....anyone use it before? is it worth it??
I also use and love my 305 with HR and Cadence. It was worth the money just to use it with it's own Garmin software. I still haven't figured out to draw my route on MMR and then get it into my garmin unit and follow it.
I look at my HR and my Cadence every ride and compare from a month or a year ago. I am still not sure if the higher end models are worth the money but I know mine is great and I hardly use half of its features.
Heart Rate and Cadence isn't something that I would care too much about. But upon looking at some of the features I guess the only difference between the 205 and 605 would be the map utility.
I guess to save a few $$$$ I could always just carry a map around.
I do map out a lot of my rides and that is something that I would like to be able to do....upload a route that I have drawn out and follow it on the GPS.
I know the only downside would be that the 205 wouldn't have the map, and it would just show the route, where as the 605 I am assuming I would be able to see the route on the map and if there was a detour easily follow it back.
I gulped and bought the Garmin Edge 705 this spring.
I had the 205 before and tough expensive, the 705 has been a terrific complement to my bike. And yes, pay the $75 extra for thememory card with North America. t's well, worth it.
I use the 705 on several bikes and take it with me everywhere. Down in Georgia visiting my son on Father's day this past Sunday, I got lost on some very, very rural Georgia roads. I snuck in a ride on my sons MB before they all got up and thought I'd miss church if I didn't get back. The 705 vectored me in perfectly.
I've used in in Michigan's Upper Peninsula and all around my Detroit home and can't say enough about it.

I've heard only good things about the Garmin line.
I opted for a different approach I don't like carrying too many gadgets. My cellphone is a Treo running Windows Mobile. I shopped around and found an outstanding s/w package called RUN.GPS (eSymmetric in Germany) for ~ $65.00. Has most of the features of the Garmin 705 except for heart rate. As soon as they find a company that makes a BT hrm, they will include that s well. So in one device, I have cellphone, MP3 player, most of the features of the 705 - plus others as well.
So if you have a WM cellphone - checkout RUN.GPS (www.rungps.net)

crtrnr - A couple of quick thoughts - if it's not too late and you've already made a purchase:
- Check out reviews of the 605 online - I've found some not too encouraging reviews. It also seems you may need to buy $100 of maps. It's a super expensive unit anyway.
- I bought the 305 and thus far it's working well with the exception that calorie count is bogus as its based on distance along and that elevation is problematic.
Between the 205 and the 305, other than heart rate and candence the other different is elevation - the 305 has a "barometric altimeter" which supposedly is more accurate than GPS alone. The 305 so far is not doing very well with elevation for me (I live in NYC, tho).
Hope that helps somewhat.
I have the Garmin 305 and I am in the "I love it" catagory.
Hills are for some unknown reason my favorite part of my rides.
The elevation, Grade percentage, heart rate and cadance are some of the useful features for me.
I can compare my data over the training season. This really show my progress over time.
The garmin will also help when you are doing your intervals.
I just wish MMR would also take the heart rate, cadance, calories burned etc. from the unit.
Motion based will soon add calories (saved $20 but I didn't know at the time)
Get the Garmin but learn how to use it. Screwing around with it out on the road never seems to work.
It even works great for running.
The lungsofire are always in the spring.
