    My achilles tendon has been tight and sore for...well, about a year, on and off.  I stretch, ice it, brace it, but nothing seems to work. It's beginning to affect the knee on the same leg, must be because I am compensating in some way.  It is actually more painful when I am just walking. OR if I have been sitting for any length of time and need to walk...I look like some doddering old lady for a few minutes as I try to stretch it out.

     

    Any Suggestions?

    I have had a bad AT like you Sue for approx 11 months too. I really worked on my stretching  prior to my runs. I also  got new cushioning running shoes that work for my 6'2 200 lb frame.

    I believe getting new shoes and doing extra stretching have helped me in my recovery. I'm training for a marathon in Oct and feel excited that my AT has improved over the last 2 months to continue my training.

       My AT's were really sore until I went to a really good running shoe store and they said I was going over on my instep. I bought shoes with extra stability and the problem cleared up almost immediately.

       Not sure if that helps...your case may be dofferent, but it's worth considering.

    Yikes!  I would find someone who does Active Release Technique - they can also coach you on some more intense stretches for those calves which are likely involved in the AT issue - check out ART on-line.  ART is amazingly effective. 

    My physical therapist also got me in the habit of stretching my feet before I put any weight on them in the morning (back from the plantar fascitis injury) - stretching the foot also provides a gentle stretch for the calves -  (while seated, cross your leg and pull the foot back toward your shin and hold) and this year I've been free of the stiff morning waddle to the westwoom syndrome (from stiff feet!).  Good luck -
