I'm a walker with headphones who's wondering if anyone knows where the good, yet entertaining podcasts are. I've found the "hard" news podcasts, but I'm also looking for mildly entertaining, but "normal" non-news sites. Maybe even audio from TV shows, etc. It seems like 99% of the podcasters are just plain weird; I mean, "The Underwater Basketweaving Podcast" and "Weasels Ripped My Flesh Radio" is just not for me. Thanks in advance.
Depending on where you are politically, National Public Radio should be a great source for Podcasts. Many of their associated programs, such as Fresh Air, This American Life, and Talk of the Nation are offered as Podcasts. NPR has a reputation of being somewhat left, though I couldn't really coment on that.
I've yet to make the MP3 leap (saving it for those hard winter months) I've often thought that these programs would be great companions on less-than-fun runs.
Podcast have really changed my training (there is only so often you hear your even favourite songs). My personal choice for non news which I listen during training:
- In English: NPR (as pointed out), Slate, Scientific American
- In French: Canal Academie (very good, including history, literature, science, etc - is there such a thing in English?), France Inter/ 2000 ans d'Histoire (history), Télérama radio (art critics, literature, etc)
Thanks folks. No problem with NPR; I'm already slightly left-of-center anyway. I also found some other good podcasts that are also less news-intensive yet not stupid (Discovery Channel, PBS/Nova, Family Heath Radio, Old Time Radio) and I keep finding more now that I dug a little deeper.
I also tried several "Podcatchers". If you don't know what I'm referring to, a Podcatcher aggregates the various Podcasts, downloads them, and sticks them all in one folder so you can offload them to your MP3 player easily. The best one I've found, in case anyone's interested, seems to be Ziepod (http://www.ziepod.com/). Easy to use interface, less PC crashes, and FREE.
