I bought a Garmin 205 about a month ago.  So worth the investment.  You will definitely enjoy it.  DawnMuir, you are absolutely right, if you run by yourself it does keep you motivated.Cool

My kids gave me a Forerunner 205 last Christmas, and I haven't run without it since.  Fantastic.

    Depending on your budget:

A hydration Belt (Amphopod, Fuel Belt) - $40

Shoes (If you know what they wear) - $80-120

    RoadID - $20

    Garmin Forerunner 305 - Runner's best friend - the BOMB!- $200

    iPod Shuffle - $49 refurbished at apple.com, $79 new

If you can't afford the Garmin the Nike+ sportband is nice too - now that it integrates with mapmyrun.com you can see your pace, distance, etc. in a lot more detail than what the Nike+ site offers.  They're around $60 + $10 or so for the shoe pocket if you don't have Nike shoes.

Thank you all for the suggestions! The Garmin Forrunner would have beena great idea but since I received a HRM watch for my birthday I can't ask for another one! But the Nike+ sportband sounds good (afterall I have TWO wrists!). Do you have like yours?

I also thought of  "the running Stick"... (for a lest expensive choice)... As anyone used it? Is it worth or it is just a gadget I wont use?

The Stick is amazing.  I use it pretty much before and after every run.  It's great for sore muscles!

Have to admit the Garmin 205 Forerunner is a must!

I agree The Stick is great! So is a foam roller for stretching. Do you have the new IPOD NANO? Runnersworld.com has a section for holiday gifts for runners,  that may give you some more ideas.

One gift for runners is the Body Bottle. It's a water bottle that straps to the arm and found at: bodybottle.com

I have the Garmin 305, and it's the single most important piece of gear I own. Well, shoes are always a good idea too, and therapy tools like The Stick, a foam roller, or stretching strap will help keep you injury free. I also recommend reading Triumph. It's about Jessee Owens and the 1936 Olympics, great book!

By the way, the Garmin is a GPS watch not HRM. The 305 does have a HRM strap, but the 205 is cheaper. After a run you can see your past runs on Google maps, the altitude you climed, average speed/pace, total distance, breakdowns of performance on each mile, half mile, etc., and other stats. As you run it also tells your current speed, time, distance, average, calories, and has an optional alarm if you go too fast/slow.

I've got a new one: pre-paid massages. A little more decadent. Maybe you ask for this one from your rich uncle...and it's not a luxury, rather "it's a key aspect of your training". ;-)

Is the forerunner 205 as good as the 305? (if you're not particularly bothered with heart-rate)

I've been tinkering with the idea of buying one, but have read that the map display is 'next to useless' on many reviews; this was said of the 205 not the 305 - is the map function better on the 305?

If its only realistic use is to give distance and calories burned - why bother when you can use a site like this after a run?

    Come on - CONVINCE ME!

The Nike+ is fantastic. I also endorse the massage and the Road ID. A few other gifts not mentioned yet:

    • Nike heart-rate monitor. I was skeptical, but using it definitely helped me train more effectively and eventually run a more even marathon.
    • Prepaid entry into an upcoming race.
    • Epsom salts (stocking stuffer).
    • Box o' Sports Gel.
    • Runners' gloves (climate depending, of course)

    Blister plasters.

Not for your feet; for the nipples! - no matter how hairy you are, because the pad in the centre is adhesive, they stick to the nipple and don't come off, even in the shower.

As they are a soft thin film unlike conventional plasters,  you can wear the same ones for two or three days.

Ideal for blood free nipples christmas, or whenever.
