Came back from 5.5 miler - easy pace (7:30), and started feeling pain where my mcl is.  Next day , lots of swelling and tremendous pain and tender when touched .  Iced for three days.  Today I can walk around without pain and swelling is just about non-existant.   I think I overstretched before I ran.   Has anyone experienced this injury before?  I'd like to walk and run 3 - 4 miles tomorrow.  Is that unreasonable, if I experience no pain?

Have you injured that knee previously? I don't think you could cause that much pain and swelling by over-stretching. You might get some other opinions, but you probably should have your knee looked at by a good orthopedic doctor. The swelling worries me, especially if it was joint effusion (looks and feels like there is a water balloon under your skin). Hope it's something simple and not a ligament or meniscus problem.

Go see a physical therapist. He'll probably be quicker to see than the orthopedist. Most states have direct access and you don't have to go through the hassle of the MD's office. I agree with jodaddy, this does not sound like an "over stretching" injury. My concern is the onset of the pain and the swelling. You do need to get this looked at. Hopefully this is not your meniscus.

Had major injuries to this leg before.  Cartilige (sp?) is essentially gone.  Ligaments were damaged in a blow out 14 years ago (30 years old).  I want to add a bit more:  The swelling is almost nonexistant now.  Can walk w/o pain.  I walked /ran 2.5 miles with some discomfort.  It seemed that the more I stretched, the better it felt.  I iced it when I returned and no swelling.  The pain is slightly there, but it actually felt better when I returned from the run.

I am going to give it a week and follow a heat, stretch, run, ice routing.  I appreciate the advice,  and I will follow it after a week if it develops the problem.

PS-  In retrospect, I believe that I injured it the previous day when I slipped on ice.  When my leg shot up in the air, I felt a sharp pain (limped for 20 minutes or so).
