If you're always on the lookout for new tunes or playlists which are good for running to, you might want to join the group I just created. Click here to check it out and/or join.

The idea is that you can add playlists as separate discussions, or start discussions for a genre of music (rock, indie, etc) and then people can reply with their favorite playlists.

Like Shakespeare says, "If music be the food of love / run on, run on." Or something like that.

How to Deal with Slow Mapping Tool - Tips for Performance

Some users have complained that the site is slow, even on fast internet connections. Here are some tips to help:

Use Firefox - We test the site across a
variety of browsers, and in almost all cases, Firefox is the clear
performance winner. If you're not familiar with Firefox, it is a free
browser, available on most platforms from http://www.getfirefox.com.
The performance differences can be shocking, especially compares to
Internet Explorer 6.0. If you're on windows and insist on using
Internet Explorer, it will work, but please use at least version 7 for
good performance. For the mac users, Safari's in the same boat...it
should be functional on the site, but it isn't as fast as Firefox.

Check your memory -
Our sites are accessed via the Internet, but the routing application
still needs to use the horsepower of your computer to do most of it's
work. The biggest variable here is RAM, and as always, the more the
better. For most uses, we recommend systems with at least 1GB of RAM,
however power users may want 2GB of RAM or more

Restart your browser
	- We have noticed that most web browsers tend to leak memory from time
to time. This can cause your browser and computer to get in a state
where it becomes very, very slow for what seems to be no reason.
Sometimes the best solution is to simply restart your browser. Advanced
users can check their browser process to see how much memory their
using (i.e. via the task manager in Windows). I will often see
firefox.exe processes using 250MB or memory or more, at which point
	it's time for a restart.

Check you routes-
The more points your route has, the more 'juice' it requires from the
route engine. If plotting long routes, try not to add points too
densely. For GPS users uploading data, try to use a mode that reduces
the number of points in your route data. For example, for Garmin
Forerunner and Edge users, we highly recommend using "Smart Recording"
	mode for this purpose.

We're working on a new layout for the mapping tool. Please let us know what you think:

http://beta.mapmyrun.com/create_new

Note, we are also including more goodies in here:

* Saved User Preferences

* Walkng Directions (ie, Turn rules of the Road Off)

* Clearer Route Notes / Cue Sheets

* More Help

* Clickable Tags / Keywords

* More Real-estate to Map your Route

Let us know what you think -- this is still a work in progress but we're interested in hearing what you think. Please note that we're also working on a performance boost to help with those slow-down / crashes with longer routes as well as more detailed route edit functionality (delete/insert point/etc)

HELP > Notes (Cue Sheets) Not Available on Printed Maps

Clarification regarding Notes (cue sheets) on Printed Maps:

When a route is originally mapped, a user has the option of selecting both the Follow Roads and Auto Notes feature. When these are selected, the notes (cue sheet) will automatically be populated with turn-by-turn directions and mileage.

Important: If notes have not been added manually or if the route was not created with the Follow Roads / Auto Notes features selected, then the notes section will not be populated and no notes will be available upon printing.

If you would like to see if the map you found has any notes before you print the route, just click on the Notes button at the top of the map. Any notes will appear in the bottom-left box next to the map.

If you would like to add notes yourself, save the route to your profile and then click on the Edit Route link above the map. Next, click on any of the mapping points. You should see an edit box come up, where you can add your own notes manually.

It's currently 10:00 p.m and most people are, wisely, sleeping for tomorrow's run.

Formerly a member of coolrunning.com before they screwed up the running log and everyone left the forums, one aspect they did have that really motivated me was a daily training thread. After a few weeks, regulars began to pop up and post about their daily training. It helps motivate tremendously, because everyone wants to talk about their run and not be the person saying.. 'Oh, I sucked today and did not run."

What was also remarkable was the fact that everyone, from all ability levels, participated in the daily discussion. This is great for the new year, it begins on Tuesday. So, tomorrow, after I run.. I'll be posting in this thread a summary of the workout I did that day.

I hope someone else beats me to it and makes the first post.. it's a thread I haven't seen while on this site... Different people can start each days Training Summary Thread - basically, whoever decides to get out and run the earliest and then get back to post about it first!

I hope this idea seems good to everyone.. because it was my favorite part about coolrunning.com... and I hope it's your favorite part about mapmyrun.com

It's almost December, which means it is almost the end of 2009!

How is everybody doing with their miles this year compared to last year?

I just surpassed my 2008 total miles last week. I think I am going to actually achieve my goal of 3000 miles this year, especially if we continue to have beautiful weekends in St. Louis like the last couple have been. I've got 220 miles to go, which is quite possible to do in my spinning class.

Maybe, someday, I will even update my route!

Hi Guys,

I am brand new to this running thing. I began working with a personal trainer in May and have lost 40 pounds. I have decided to start a running program with hopes to participate in Team in Training (with the half marathon) in the future.

I found a running plan on Running World and tried it in August. With the help of my personal trainer, modified it to meet my needs and 2 weeks in was having all sorts of knee pain, and found out that with every step, including when I walk, I take, I dislocate my knee caps (for lack of better description). Anyway, stopped running and started physical therapy which has helped tremendously.

So I have been running for 1 minute x 1 week now, with walking for 1-3 minutes between each running minute. This goes well. I can keep this up for a full 30 minutes. I tried to jump to 2 minutes of running and minutes of walking this week. Again, I am so out of breath and my lungs and chest burn for the duration and following 6 hours after I run. I also start to get dizzy about 20 minutes into the run. Is this normal? Why is 2 minutes so much harder than 1 minute (even with a longer walking break)? Any advice on how to improve this? I run at a 4.5 mph pace, and walk at a 3.0 mph pace, if that helps.

Thanks for all your help!!!

The stuff I think about while on the Bike

If you haven't been following the discussion "Seriously...boogers...?" then you are missing out on some great snot management advice. The discussion made it obvious that there is a lot of thought put into the clearing out of the nose. I figured this was due to amount of time one has to think while hammering out a 30+ mile ride.

Daguilar72 said that he has often thought about writing a book of all the crap he thinks about while riding. He decided against it, however, for the sake of his reputation. If he's not going to make a book out it, then I'm going to make a thread about it.

Personally, I like to do math in my head. I know this is wierd. I am a poor public school teacher (as if there are any other kinds of public school teachers) and couldn't get all the gadgets when I first got my bike. So, when I first started riding I would use this site to figure out the total distance of the ride then try to memorize the distance between landmarks. Then I would use my watch to figure my pace, average speed, and any other math problems that popped into my brain. I now have a basic bike computer. I still have to figure my own pace.

I also enjoy mooing at herds of cattle as I fly by. This is not thinking, but it does entertain.

What do you think about while on the bike?

Hi everyone!

I've noticed recently in the past 2-3 weeks or so that when I finish running and cooling down I sneeze a lot for some time after the run. This will range from a time period of 30 minutes after the run to 6+ hours after I run. I'm not sick, nor do I feel sick, and I don't have any allergies. The weather hasn't cooled down too much (today was a balmy 55 degrees and I still had a sneeze attack for some 45 minutes after the run), so I'm not sure why this is happening. Has anyone else experienced this problem or has any ideas for why this might be happening? This has never happened to me before so I'm not quite sure what to do about it!

Thanks!

Ellen

I am a newbie to this site... any chance you can remove those annoying advertising pop-up ads? They are in the middle of my map and having issues trying to manuever around it. Let me know if anyone has any quick fixes? Thx!

I deleted a bunch of old maps last week, not knowing that my wife had Bookmarked them instead of Saving A Copy to her profile. As of right now, the distance and time are in her training log, but no map/route name. I know it's a long shot, but is there any way the DBA can restore these

Had acl reconstruction (right knee) around a year ago. rehabed it, was a slow process at times but was back doing light running relativly quickly. was keeping the km's down but was feeling sweet so increased in past 2 months... have developed what i think is patella tendonitis(or something similar) in my supposedly good knee. WTF... frustrating. anyone had similar or some insight into why? its occured or how to fix? other than this running was going great on the new knee.
