I've done it mid day on a weekend and encountered as few as 4 in the headlands. You can make it longer by taking Bobcat to Wolfback Ridge instead of Rodeo Valley to SCA. see http://www.nps.gov/goga/maps/pdf/map-mahe.pdf. The elevation tool says >3000 feet total climbing but that can't be right. Only very short portions are more than 4-5% grade and I'd say maybe 1000' gain. I suppose I'll take a GPS someday...
