Goal Trophy

- This is the trophy that will be awarded for conquering this challenge.

A marathon sounds like a really long way, but spread out over 30 days, members participating in the MapMyRun.com Walk 26.2 Miles in 30 Days Challenge need to walk less than a mile per day to meet the goal!  The average American walks 1.5 miles per day, but for members just starting to exercise, a daily stroll of 0.87 miles – which will amount to a 26.2-mile marathon in 30 days – can put them on the path towards great health.

This flexible goal allows MapMyRun.com members to compete against other participants by walking 26.2 miles in any 30-day period. The 30 days must be consecutive, but members need not walk every day.  Members can measure their success against other members. MapMyRun.com provides participating members with the site’s tools, including walk mapping with elevation and distance, street and topographical map viewing, and workout logging.

MapMyRun.com suggests that walking 0.87 miles per day may be the most effective way to meet this particular goal.  For members that want a schedule, however, MapMyRun.com proposes the following simple schedule for success at walking 26.2 miles in 30 days:

Week #SunMonTueWedThuFriSatTotal
12Rest111Rest27
22Rest1Rest1Rest26
32Rest111Rest27

I know when I save my walk from the phone it has a bunch of random characters before the date when I see it online. Once I delete the random characters and just leave the date and save the walk it shows up in my running total for my goals. Otherwise it wouldn't count that walk in my total for my goal

My walks are being added to the goals, but I can only view my progress on the website and not from my iphone. Any ideas? Also, i constantly get an error message when trying to save my work outs and they only save when I go to "trainging" then back to start workout..

2) I walked precisely the same route every day, sometimes twice in a day. I got measurements from 1.68 miles to 2.75 miles. I think part of this was due to receiving text messages and the occasional phone call, so perhaps the software could be tweaked to allow for that on a walking workout. Maybe the signal could pulse, so that if it was blocked by another app, it could infer the route based on the previous readings when the signal was clear again.

I had no major problems with this challenge, but would like to point out a couple of enhancements that could be useful.

1) The GPS signal was consistently registering "weak" when I set my iPhone software. I live in NYC. I can imagine that might present a challenge, except I live in a part of NYC where the buildings are pretty small, maybe three or four stories tall (with some exceptions).

2) I walked precisely the same route every day, sometimes twice in a day. I got measurements

I'm not sure if this is part of the issue or not, but I'll put it out there anyways as an FYI - the goal progress doesn't update in real-time (IE: if you enter a workout, you won't immediately see your goal progress updated). We update every user's goal progress on a nightly basis, so you should always see the progress updated the next day.

I am also having an issue with the walks being properly recorded. I use the iphone app and save them as walks. They are correctly set up in my traning log as walks. However, they are not deducting from the challenge correctly. Any thoughts?

Thanks Brad, however, I've checked my log of routes and it says that each walk has been uploaded as a walk, not a run, so unfortunately I'm no wiser. Is there something in my profile I need to change? It stopped adding my walks to the total about two weeks ago.
Cheers
Liz

What a great idea! In the past, I've hibernated during the Winter, waiting for the weather to warm up, so I could get back on the bike and put the miles in. This gave me the motivation and insight to keep moving during the Winter. It took about 15 to 20 walks spread out through the month to get it done, but I finished my Marathon yesterday, and I am so psyched!!!

Thanks for your input regarding this goal, we definitely appreciate all the feedback we can get. As for your specific situation, the reason that some of your workouts aren't being counted towards the goal is because the goal is to "WALK a Marathon in 30 Days" ;) (keyword here being walk) - so anytime you enter a workout as a "run", it won't be counted towards this goal. Visit the Create Goal Page to start your own goal and choose the workout types.

Unfortunately sometimes my walks are added to my challenge but mostly they are not. I contacted Map My Fitness to ask why this was but got no response. They upload fine and the routes are on the website. Very disappointing to find that several walks later I have still only completed 39% of the challenge when it actually must be more like 55%. Anyone have an idea of how to fix this?
Thanks

I'm going to begin training for the Avon Breast Cancer 2-day in May. The walk is a marathon and a half, so I thought I'd do an 18 week training program...walking 4 days, building up to long walks on weekends. My problem is that I live in MA...snow and I have to use a jogging stroller as my toddler will be tagging along most of the time!!! Thought I'd trade in my elliptical for a treadmill to begin training during the winter months, but my husband says the ellptical will work just as well i

I guess I was right. MMF finally acknowledged to add at least 3 of the Gym / Health Club exercises that I have been using without them counting towards my goal. Now after working out on the elliptical it did finally count towards my new goal I set as of today. Previously they weren't part of the valid workout types.

I answered my own question! You have to select the goal, and select quit to remove it from your profile. In my case, it took both instances away so I had to re-create, but it picked up my stored workout sessions, so all is good!

Happy New Year all!!!

Thanks for the info Rahil...
but that is not the problem in my case. I am starting to realize however that this goal system does not pick up for Treadmill miles at the gym. I just tested my theory and it was correct. I tested my theory by logging a fake workout walk of 5 miles and as long as I was using one of the predetermined valid workout types, it would register. The only problem with that is it does not include my Treadmill workouts which is what I need it to do as a valid workout type.

What a great idea and relatively simple to accomplish. My walks tend to be about 2-3 miles when I do them so this should really be doable. It's always good to set reasonable goals.

This is great. I am a cancer patient. I live in one of the coldest places in the world in Canada and I have to workout on a treadmill that flips my breakers afer 20 minutes of walking...
This is one of the only challenges that is just challenging enough without being overly strenuous on my bod.

OK what is going on here? My progress status bar has not worked for a day then decided to work by registering 45% which was correct and then all day yesterday and today until a minute ago it decided to work again and registered my newest workout to bring it to 55%. What is going on? Do any of you guys have this problem or is it just lucky me? lol
