- Description:
- The Northwood Chesapeake Bay Trail 5K (home to the MCPS Consortia Cross-Country Championship Meet) starts on the back corner of the athletic fields at Northwood High School. After going around the perimeter of the field, including the hill, it enters the woods near the tennis courts on the trail created and maintained by Northwood High School students and the Potomac Appalachian Trail Club. There is a sign at the trailhead. The trail first takes you left towards University Blvd. then leaves the woods on grass for about a 1/4 mile. It returns to the trail just after a vernal pool to take you down hill into Northwest Branch Park for a close up look at the water that flows into the Chesapeake Bay via the Northwest Branch of the Anacostia River. You cross a bridge at the bottom of the hill then go LEFT on the trail coming up from the bridge. The trail takes you into and across a creek, going to the RIGHT as you come out of the creek to run alongside it.It finishes by taking you back up the substantial hill on the trail to the Northwood athletic fields for another trip around the perimeter with the final 300 meters a glorious finish in front of the bleachers on the track
