(1998) So, I am a recreational 5 and 10k runner. My wife takes me from RI USA to meet her cousin in Hout Bay South Africa. Ian and Sally had a gorgeous home nestled between Chapman's Peak and Capetown. Their home is on a mountainside looking into a bowl surrounded by 4 other mountains, Atlantic Ocean looming behind three of them. So after drinking a few bottles of wine and smoking cigarrettes , we start to discuss running. To my amazement Ian had run 9 Comrades Marathons (50+ miles). He said he would show me his loop the next morning....
We began by leaving their semi-suburban neighborhood, running down hill to the center of Hout Bay. We then began a 3KM rise to LLandudnau. As we decended to the edge of the Atlantic Ocean in LLandudnau we passed multi-million dollar homes, Ferraries, Mercedes, etc. . Turning the loop back along the Ocean we ran on a thicket/sand path. My eyes were fixed on the multitudes of Dolphin playing (or feeding?) in the waves. Seals sat patiently on rocks. On reaching Sandy Bay, I was glad to see the Nudists were not out that morning. We then turned to run/crawl straight up a sandy bluff perhaps 100 feet high. On reaching the top I saw a vast expanse of snow. snow? wait, no, it was white sand dunes stretching for a quarter mile. We traversed the sand dunes and dropped quickly back into the neighborhood. Wow.The best visual run of my life. The next morning while Ian was at work, I grabbed a disposible camera and ran it again just for the pictures. Over the years I lost the pictures but found these to scan and share.
